  1. You don't reallly need to put all of your other schools on hold. Once you've gotten all of your acceptances/rejections, why don't you pick your #2 choice (the school you'd choose if funding at GWU falls through) and decline the other offers? Just a thought
  2. Hang in there, Tay1991! The wait will be worthwhile when you get tons of acceptances in just a few short weeks
  3. Congrats to everyone who has heard good news from BU!! It seems like an amazing program! (I've already assumed I didn't make the cut, but after interviews I realised the cold climate isn't for me, anyway! ) Keeping my fingers crossed that the good news keeps coming for all of us this week!!!
  4. CONGRATS!!! :D (i ran out of positive votes for the day )
  5. Hi Nancy! Welcome to our little corner of the Grad Cafe:) 1- It's awesome that you've figured out what you're passionate about in life. Lots of students come to SLP after having other careers, so you definitely wouldn't be alone. Some schools actually prefer applicants with diverse, non-traditional backgrounds. 2- Check out ASHA.org, which is the SLP professional organization. You can find links to academic journals, general info about the field, etc. 3- For volunteering, you wouldn't typically need a background. You can ask around to shadow SLPs in your community, or even work part-time as a habilitation therapist or respite provider for clients with speech/language issues. Grad schools typically like incoming students to already have 25 observation hours with licensed SLPs (can be from multiple SLPs/settings). 4- I considered OT/PT, but didn't want to be in school for so long. SLP programs are typically 2yrs (3 for out-of-field applicants).
  6. Spending time on the Grad Cafe to avoid working on my thesis :P

  7. CONGRATS!! you're really racking up the acceptances! That is awesome!!!
  8. I would do it, assuming you can afford a weekend away from your current occupation. What would happen if the funding falls through for your #2 choice, and you're "stuck" with only this one funded acceptance? Then you'd end up moving to a place without ever visiting in person (which isn't terrible, but doesn't seem ideal).
  9. NAU (Northern AZ), Teachers College, Baylor, TCU, Vanderbilt. At this point, I've really narrowed it down to 2-- UNC and another that I haven't heard from. I won't be heartbroken if I am rejected from all 7 schools, but I would just like to know!
  10. I was so excited that it was finally Monday... but I guess we will still be waiting :/ Hopefully we get news sometime this week!
  11. I've also had some minor issues with WaveSurfer, Audacity, Pepper font, and some general problems watching observation videos that professors have uploaded. These issues were all manageable, but probably would have been faster and easier with a PC.
  12. Ahhh congrats on MGH! That is awesome And with a scholarship, too!!! Thanks for taking one for the team and emailing
  13. Woo-hoo! You're on a roll! That is a great sign of things to come:)
  14. Grrr I feel like we've all gotten conflicting info re: notifications Anybody brave enough to give them a call?! (Not me! )
  15. I'm a HUGE Mac person, but it might be a wiser choice to save the money. I only use a Mac because my parents were nice enough to buy it for me-- if/when I need a new computer, it'll probably be something less expensive. And if you get a cheaper computer, you could also get a nice, new iPad...
  16. It's especially hard when the school keeps contacting you reminding you of the 4/15 deadline and encouraging you to accept and pay the deposit NOW! even though they have yet to release any funding information.
  17. I know I already commented on the other thread, but I figured i'd post here, too, just to get the ball rolling I applied to TCU and Baylor, even though I've never been to texas! It just seems like a fun state to live in for 2+ years, and is still relatively close and accessible to my family. Anyone else applying to Baylor for Summer '13??
  18. Just FYI, you may want to post this on the SLP forum under the "Professional Programs" category I also applied to Baylor (summer start) and TCU. TCU said their committee doesn't even meet until their spring break, so we won't hear anything until very late March. I also know TCU only admits 15 students, so it is extremely competitive and they have to reject some great applicants. I think the Baylor program seems neat because it is only 4 semesters, meaning would do Summer 13, Fall 13, Spring 14, Summer 14, then graduate (and start earning money!). However, it is pretty expensive and in a small town which may be a turn off.
  19. Trying desperately (and unsuccessfully) to stave off the senioritis...

  20. Yeah, I think it'd be courteous to at least make the process more transparent. I know some schools prefer to do rolling admissions, and others prefer to wait until Spring Break and take a whole week for the Ad Comm to review applications; some use a waitlist, while others admit more students than "real seats". That's fine. However, they need to tell us what the heck they are doing! I wish they would give us a specific notification date or range, and I think they should, to the best of their abilities, notify applicants simultaneously. There is no reason to take your time and notify accepted students over THREE days.
  21. Just FYI, the restaurant is right by the lightrail stop. You can ride the lightrail to the 44th and Washington station, then take a quick shuttle to the airport. I believe a 1-way trip is like $2, and won't take (much) longer than driving
  22. Would travel costs be different if you visit another time? I think that's what I'm doing at one school-- the trip for the one-day accepted students open house is WAY out of my budget, but I'm going to wait a week or two until I hear if I get any other acceptances, then schedule a trip for an off-peak time so I can at least get a tour and chat with a couple current students. The downside seems to be that I would miss the official presentation and won't get to meet my potential classmates.
  23. I'm bringing a small, black leather purse (that coordinates with my "professional" outfit), and carrying a copy of my resume & some paper for Q&As. I'm assuming they will give us a folder of info at the beginning, so I'm just planning to stick my paperwork in there. (We could also just jot questions/answers on the back of the handouts they give us, but I want extra space to doodle ) And i'm just bringing my wallet, keys, and a couple of pens in case we need them for the writing portion. And sunglasses!!
