HELP: How to address professors in email?
katieliz456 replied to pinkberry's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Personally, I would stick with "Dr. Smith". If I ended up going to his office hours/helping in his lab and he told me (in person) to call him "Mark", then I would switch. It never hurts to be a little extra-formal, but that's just my opinion -

I think it's VERY different than undergrad. The vast majority of us prospective SLPs seem to be the crazy, type-A people who apply to a bajillion schools, which inflates the number of applicants. I think the waitlists will move quite a bit, especially once schools get financial aid info out! -
Speech Pathology - Texas Schools

So TCU said they were meeting to make decisions last week (Spring Break), and that they would mail out letters after. I'm hoping that means we will hear this week?! -

Good point, thanks for the advice! I'm really excited to explore the different aspects of SLP during grad school. I have lots of exposure to therapy in schools, but the only voice/swallowing i've seen was when i shadowed an ENT and his team this summer at the local Mayo clinic. -

Wow! That's super impressive! What are the 3 languages? I bet she'll be fluent in all of them! My advisor recently told me about a former student who emailed him for advice because she was worried her daughter was "confused" by the languages spoken in the home-- the mother, father, and nanny each spoke 8+ languages, with some overlap between them (English, Yiddish, and a bunch of Eastern European languages). The parents eventually decided that each caretaker would choose 2 languages to speak around the child. The child ended up being multilingual in 5 of the languages, i think!! -

Thanks for the input! I definitely will NOT be doing a thesis again; writing isn't my strong suit :/ (I wish i was as brave/motivated as you, Kcald!!) If i was absolutely required to do a thesis/research project, i would still focus on language/literacy, but since i "just" want to be a clinician, i hoped i could afford to expand my horizons. -
In my acquired/neurogenic disorders class this semester, we had a book club assignment and the professor provided the following list to choose from. I haven't read all of them, but they are all supposed to be good and are fairly easy reads Tuesday’s with Morrie, Mitch Albon Always looking Up, Michael J Fox My Stroke of Insight, Jill Bolte Taylor The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death, Jean-Dominique Bauby The Day Donny Herbert Woke Up, Rich Blake Change in the Weather: Life after Stroke, Mark McEwan In an Instant: A Family's Journey of Love and Healing, Lee Woodruff The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales, Oliver Sacks Aging With Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives, David Snowdon My Year Off: Recovering Life After a Stroke, Robert McCrum The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. 2013 SLP Admissions Thread!
katieliz456 replied to midnight's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I asked about this in "Concentration/Research Interests" thread, but I'm hoping I can get some input here, too For the past 3 years, I've been VERY interested in language acquisition and literacy/preliteracy development. I wrote my thesis on language acquisition, and have worked in several literacy & language research labs. However, I've recently become very interested in dysphagia, particularly pediatric dysphagia, and might like to work in a NICU or hospital with these patients. Is it too late to change my mind? I'd really like to at least get some practicum experience in swallowing, but I'm worried that it would seem sketchy if I change my interests to something I never even mentioned in my SOP. Thoughts? -
SLP programs accepting for Winter

Baylor accepts students for Spring semester. I'm not sure how competitive it is for that term, but it might be worth a try -
Concentration/Research Interests
katieliz456 replied to CO (soon to be) SLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I've always been interested in literacy and language acquisition, and this is the area where most of my research & my thesis has been. Recently, I've started to develop an interest in dysphagia. At least out here, there is a high demand for specialized SLPs in NICUs and PICUs, so I could still work with kids while avoiding the outrageous school caseloads, crazy politics, and relatively low pay. However, I'm wondering if it's too late to change my interests-- I already wrote about my work in language&literacy for my personal statement, and I'm worried it might seem like I'm betraying my grad school by changing my mind. Opinions on this? -

ahaha i was mostly just amused-- probably because my brain is so sleep-deprived-- but it seems super unprofessional. It's not a huge deal, because i actually am accepted to Vandy, and I will likely turn down that offer regardless. I am still kinda upset about ASU though (it was definitely an official rejection), and I'm going to try to ask my thesis director today because he knows EVERYTHING that happens in the department. -
The other side of being accepted....shopping and planning the trip! :D

Maybe you could try and find another grad student from your program/school? Or you could always skype the potential roomie to make sure they're not a total creeper -

OMG. i returned to my house near campus this morning after traveling for Spring Break, and had an official letter from Vanderbilt...A REJECTION LETTER!!!!! I almost had a heart attack (especially since i'd already gone through this with ASU). I contacted Penny and she confirmed that the rejection was indeed an error, and that I really am accepted, but still.... that was way too shocking for me to handle on a Monday morning! haha -

Same here! I just took two huge bags of books to the used book store, and I've told my friends to not let me buy any more clothes, which is harder than it sounds. I think I might be crazy for attempting a cross-country move with a small sedan and my hyperactive Jack Russell -
Have you asked about putting down a larger security deposit or pre-paying a few months' rent? I know around here landlords typically just ask for a security deposit, and occasionally first/last months' rent, but maybe try using your "stack of dough" to offer more payment up front (say, 3 months' rent plus a security deposit)?

"You can't go to UNC because you're not a basketball fan. What *is* a 'Tar Heel', anyway? That's a dumb name!" "You know, your cousin's neighbor's daughter went to Vanderbilt for undergrad. She studied archaeology, and she couldn't find a job anywhere! She ended up volunteering at some Native American museum and depending on her parents for money!" -

I agree :/ I guess i could understand if the GAs helped sort through some aspect that was more quantifiable and less subjective, like discarding all applications with a GPA below 3.0, or sorting applications based on GRE. I suppose it could be helpful for them to read the letters/statements and maybe make some brief notes for the adcomm, like "This applicant is REALLY interested in the CI research projects in Professor X's lab", or "All of this applicant's letters give negative reviews of her academic performance", but I can't believe they let grad students actually score these things! D: -
I don't think it's fair to rule out a school just for its location, although it is something to consider. I'm sure you and the other students will find plenty of ways to stay entertained and, if there's ever a lot of "down time", you could do a day trip back home. And, if I remember correctly, AuD students spend their last year at an externship, right? So you could still have a year of living somewhere "fun" and exotic?

M. Ed. Higher Ed Admin--U of Michigan or Vanderbilt?
katieliz456 replied to lobster615's topic in Decisions, Decisions
(Totally random, unhelpful comment) : What do you think of Vanderbilt? It's looking like I will be deciding between Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt for my program (different field), but I won't get a chance to actually visit the university/Nashville Is it a good environment for grad students? -
Ugh i agree > i REALLY like two of the schools I was accepted to, and I will most likely end up attending one of them, but I'd still like to hear from the remaining two schools in Texas.
