Awesome, thanks for the tips! I noticed that it seems to be pretty central-- it looks like only 2-ish hours to Dallas, Fort worth, or Austin, and even San Antonio seems do-able for a long weekend trip. (Besides, I will only be in Waco for 3 semesters, so location isn't a HUGE deal for me.)

ooooh, good idea! I might even have to buy one for myself, too ; ) My out-of-state prof is not a coffee person, sadly, and I'm not too familiar with the area she's in, so idk what kinds of places she frequents :/ -

Do you all have any thank-you gift ideas for out-of-state recommenders? One of my profs is now at a different university, and I feel like she went above and beyond, and wrote me an extremely detailed and thoughtful letter. I don't want to send anything fragile or heavy (expensive to ship), and I'm skeptical about sending food because it might melt/get stale/etc. Any suggestions?? -
Just realized that i will (most likely) be starting grad school in exactly TWO MONTHS!!! ahhhhhh!!

Are there any 2013 Baylor prospective students?! It seems like Waco is growing and making an attempt to get more activities going, like concerts in the park and cultural events. =) I'd like to hear input from others; i know you guys must be out there somewhere!!

Does Anyone Know....... CCCs

As a side note, I've also heard that it's most convenient if you do your CFY in the state where you plan to work long-term. Otherwise, you have to submit more paperwork! -

Not yet I'm waiting to hear back from Vandy re: financial aid, and Dr. Garrett is submitting paperwork to Baylor's graduate college to try and get a recruitment stipend for me. I really plan on following the money, because i don't want loans hanging over my head during school. (I also hope to start a family after graduating, so I hopefully won't be working full-time for too many years, and I need to consider that.) I'm hoping to hear late this week or early next week, though -

I just had a 30 minute phone chat with Dr. Garrett from Baylor. He seems super nice and extremely enthusiastic about the program. (I also found out he went to Iowa and worked at UW-Madison, which makes him seem more credible.) He also told me that for the first half of summer we work with the literacy camp, which sounds AWESOME. : D -

I've had 2 profs advise me to choose the school with the best marriage prospects : P "Well, you should think about the size/presence of the other graduate programs...like engineering and med...because, you know, sometimes it's nice to have, um, males around.... since your program is 98% female.... you know?" (I actually thought it was good advice, but was just surprised that they really said it aloud!" -

I agree, as long as the program is ASHA accredited, that's what matters The negative comments are probably coming from people who wish they could attend and are jealous! -

Mystique, if i were you, i'd be really hesitant to take the risk of applying again :/ The universities keep churning out more and more SLP undergrads, so it's only gonna get more competitive. NYU is crazy expensive, but if you can get a GA position, or work part-time, and do things like live with roomies or live outside the city and commute, it might be a bit more tolerable. -

I honestly don't think it will make a difference. I'd try to get some CI/aural rehab placements in grad school, and try to do something CI-related for your CFY. You can also take tons of CEUs in specific areas, which can make you more specialized. Maybe, after grad school, you could even look into getting certified as an auditory-verbal therapist (A.G. Bell), if that is something you'd be interested in? http://www.listeningandspokenlanguage.org/AcademyDocument.aspx?id=541 -

Today, my prof was talking to me about how crazy this whole admissions process is, and how lots of qualified applicants still get rejected. She said (in all seriousness) that my rejection from my alma mater was probably because "The interviewer has indigestion during my interview", or because I "reminded my interviewer of her ex-sis-in-law/frenemy/etc.", or because I "was wearing the interviewer's least-favorite color". This makes me so upset, especially for people who have limited options for schools > -

Thanks, ladies! I'm almost positive I will take it, because Baylor was one of my top choices from the get-go. It seems like the best environment for me and I'd graduate in August '14. I just want to get more input from family/professors/students and sleep on it before making my final choice. And SLPjmar, i almost didn't recognize you with your new identity! Very sneaky -

Pronounce, I really appreciate your advice & do agree with it. I hate the idea of taking out huge loans. However, it is not always so easy to predict what schools we "can be accepted to" and which programs are "likely" to offer funding. The cheaper, state schools tend to be more competitive because EVERYONE wants to get a cheap graduate education (I'm thinking NY public universities vs. expensive schools like NYU and Columbia). In my state, there are only 3 universities with the SLP program-- 2 are highly ranked and very competitive. The 3rd is low-ranked, but only accepts a very small cohort each year. There are also a lot of students with families who cannot move cross-country. So although this is good advice, attending cheaper state schools is not always an option for everyone. -

Just got into Baylor, w/ a 25k scholarship! I'm almost positive I will accept the offer, so maybe this will help SLP Steph =) Edit: I applied/was accepted for Summer 2013, so I may have been notified before the Fall people. -
Hey! I'm also a Sun Devil-- I'm graduating this May (2013) with a double major in SHS and FHD:) I think your Spanish minor and SLPA certificate will definitely be good selling points! Your GPA seems pretty good, although it would be helpful to boost your SHS GPA. It seems like you still have lots of SHS credits, though, so that should increase by a bit. I think some of the 400-level classes are actually easier because they review the material we've been learning for the past few years. I think the worst part of the GRE is understanding the test format/process. The course should give you some great insight for that which will help you ace the real test. If you happen to be interested in any of the specific schools I applied to, feel free to ask any questions about the application process. Hope your semester is going well!

Both of your options seem great!! I anticipate that I will learn a LOT more through our hands-on clinical experiences than through actual courses. My undergrad is in SLP, so I feel like I have a solid background in the "theory", but minimal experience with the applied practice. -

I'm in the same boat-- no undergrad loans, and freaking out about the crazy tuition costs! My personal guideline (totally arbitrary, and just designed to give me peace of mind) is that I will only take loans for tuition, not for living expenses. For me, personally, that seems easier to justify. I plan on working my butt off this semester and for a full 3 months this summer to continue saving up money for rent, books, groceries, etc. I also have some leftover college savings that will help me out 1st semester. I realize this isn't possible for everyone, especially those going to school in expensive places like Boston or NYC! The repayment plans do seem pretty nice, and they're legit! However, I think that with our starting salaries, most SLPs would have loans payed off within 10 years, regardless. I also don't plan on definitely working full-time for 10 years-- I might end up taking time off to raise a family or somethings.
