  1. Only 80 people are actually attending the interviews; it looks like our chances are pretty good
  2. I am guessing it will be pen& paper. I'm trying to envision the Coor building, and there is only one large computer lab with enough computers to accommodate a large group, but it is open to the public (and there wouldn't be a block of 50+ computers available). There are a few smaller SHS labs with maybe 5-10 computers, and some laptops, and there are a couple classrooms with around 30, but I doubt they'd use them. If you think it would be a problem, I'd recommend contacting them and I bet they'd be willing to help make arrangements for you
  3. Do you guys know what exactly the "social hour" is? It seems like it is mandatory.... is it just for us to get to know one another? Will professors/current students be there, too? I wonder if it's going to be structured (like assigning us to small groups or something) or if it is just a free-for-all haha
  4. I wouldn't be tooo worried about the writing. It's only 30 mins, so it can't be too unbearable I've heard from other students that in the past, there have been some....surprises.... when it came time for graduate clinicians to write their first client reports, SOAP notes, etc. They were referring to things like using first person POV in academic writing, lacking basic grammar and punctuation skills, and writing with extremely poor fluency and organization. I think this is more of a problem since some students haven't been in school in years, and haven't taken an English class in decades (I'm sure my writing skills would be terrible if I had been out of practice for even a few years!). I think as long as we can demonstrate knowledge of how to write professionally, we should be good
  5. I am really thankful for having opportunities to chat with current students in the programs I'm applying to, but I can never think of good questions to ask! I know most of the program info is available on the website (cohort sizes, class schedule, TA/RA information), and really the only things I can ever think to ask are about campus life and housing situations. Does anyone have awesome, helpful questions that I can be prepared to ask for next time? Thanks!!
  6. Nope I don't think any of us have I emailed Vicky on Monday, but still haven't gotten a reply. It seems like we're gonna be busy for the whole day-- I believe they usually do interviews 9-12, lunch break 12-1, interviews 1-4, and then social hour.
  7. They said decisions would be mailed "about 1.5 weeks" after the interview. We would also be notified of merit scholarships at this time. I heart that only about 1/2 of interviewed applicants will be accepted...
  8. That makes sense. Thank you for the advice! It *is* a huge relief to know that I have somewhere to go, and that somewhere is a great program : D I probably should wait to hear back from at least a few more schools & get some more info. Plus, after paying all of those application fees, I do think I deserve to know what the other schools thought of my application
  9. I try to browse the ASHA Leader and the NSSLHA Now newsletter to stay up to date on stuff in the SLP world I like to take advantage of my undergrad's resources, because they give us access to pretty much every peer-reviewed journal in existence. The Journal of Child Language and the Journal of Speech, Language, & Hearing Research are ones I look at frequently that seem to be popular. However, my favorite things to read (for my personal enjoyment, not for formal research projects) are unpublished manuscripts and thesis/dissertations. I enjoy learning about the innovative, cutting-edge studies that haven't gotten around to being published yet, and that we haven't heard about 1000x from our professors! Even if you don't have access to journals from your current institution, I think you can access quite a few of these through google scholar
  10. Here's the story: I applied to 8 schools, any of which I would've been THRILLED to attend next year. I only applied to schools that were accredited by my field's professional organization, and in geographic locations where I would've liked living for 2-3 years. I didn't have a top choice or ranking in my mind, and although i had a "safety" school, I still would have enjoyed attending that program. Last week, I received my first decision (an acceptance!) to a program that happens to be one of the best in the nation, and in an area where i have lots of family. I still haven't heard anything from the 7 remaining programs I'm so tempted to just commit to UNC, because I feel like it would likely be one of my top picks even if I am accepted to multiple schools. Should I wait it out, or would it be OK to just commit to this first program and finally be able to stop worrying/obsessively checking my email? Has anyone had similar thoughts?
  11. I'm really going to grad school??! I'M GONNA BE A SPEECH THERAPIST! AHHHH :'D

Thanks! I am still in shock that I actually know (for sure) what I am going to be when i grow up :P I am still waiting (very impatiently) for now... I kind of want to hear more about finances before committing (although part of me just wants to commit somewhere so I can stop stressing about decisions haha). I have only saved enough to pay for about 1 year of school, so the rest would have to be loans which I am kinda skeptical about... :(

WOOHOO! good for you for having enough saved for one year- i'm looking down the barrel of 3 semesters out of state. congrats (:

Yay! It's a crazy realization, isn't it? Good feeling :)

  12. I've used the rolling ones before, and they just seem like a hassle :/ the retractable handle &the wheels makes it really bulky and heavy, and it takes up a lot of space inside the pack (and makes the back side rigid, so you can't cram as much stuff inside). Also, I know the clinicians at my school tend to use those rolling "crates" to tote therapy materials from campus to clinic sites (or research supplies for the RAs who do experiments in nearby schools, etc). I think it'd be difficult to have to roll a crate AND a backpack (which is probably too heavy to carry because of wheels and handle).
  13. Also, UNC- Chapel Hill finally updated my online application portal status. (Until this afternoon, it still said "Submitted" despite receiving phone call earlier.) I got an email telling me to check the portal for a decision, but it wouldn't hurt to check just in case yours is updated before your notification email
  14. Ahhhh that is awesome! Congrats! It's crazy to think that we will be getting (most of) our decisions within the next couple weeks--- the end is in sight!
  15. Yay! congratulations! I'm kind of wishing i could just get mine over with already!
  16. Good luck on the interview (not that you'll need it!) Keep us posted
  17. Oh gosh, I'm gonna gain, like, five pounds this weekend! I'm going for an interview on Saturday, but will be in town from Friday morn til Sunday late afternoon. Thanks for all the suggestions-- I appreciate it!
  18. Oooooh, you applied to Baylor, too?! Summer start or Fall start? I haven't encountered any other Baylor applicants on here yet Do you know any information about how/when we should be hearing back?
  19. Shoot, do you think that's gonna happen? :/ I made sure to schedule my flight to arrive 24hrs in advance, in case of weather delays, but I'd be super bummed if I come out there just to find it is cancelled! although it seems like they stayed (more or less) operational during Nemo and shortly before/after the crazy Hurricane Sandy stuff this fall...
  20. Thanks for the tip! I will have to check out ole! and/or anna's when i'm there this weekend
  21. Well, apparently students have to be accepted before they can even access the application to apply for that particular grant. I know good things are in store for you! And congrats to everyone else who has been hearing happy news today
  22. Thanks! I mentioned interest in their Autism Grant program in my personal statement, so I think that may be why I was contacted earlier. You both have amazing stats, so I'm sure acceptances are in the not-so-distant future for you! I'm not allowing myself to really celebrate until I see the written notice, esp. since a friend who applied to another program at UNC received an accidental acceptance email last week :/ Hoping my call was legit, though!
  23. Just got a phone call from a prof at UNC-CH and was accepted. D: D: asked about funding, and she said they don't have that info yet. Said to contact Melody H. after my official acceptance posts on website.
  24. Haha oh goodness, if I end up going somewhere besides AZ/TX, I will be consuming a ridiculous amount of Mexican food before I leave.... not good for my wallet or my diet
  25. Thanks for the heads-up! I took Clinical Methods last semester, and we had to do a lot of case-study/real-life scenario things like this, so I feel decently prepared, but I am wondering how specific we need to be? Do they expect technical terms (like "branching"), or could we explain in layman's terms? Do we need to know names of specific theories/treatment approaches, assessments, etc? And do we need to be prepared for differential diagnosis type questions? Thanks!
