  1. I've learned relatively quickly that my Masters was a joke compared to everyone else is in my cohort as they spout of scholars and theories I've never heard of. I got a 33% on my first assignment for a methods course. Granted it was only worth 3 points and I got 1 but still. Am I being irrational when I am starting to think this whole PhD might be short lived because I am grossly under qualified or is this just me having that impostor syndrome that everyone talked about so much during orientation? If no one responds, thats fine it just felt good to get this thought out there in the world since there arent many people I can talk to about it.
  2. Anyone else headed to Mizzou this fall?
  3. I will be bringing a car...on a side note I can give you some insight on Madison if you'd like as I did my undergrad there and live there now.
  4. The fact that one school said they wouldnt have decisions until June and didnt make that known prior to April
  5. What are some grad friendly apartments meaning not overrun by undergrads?
  6. I wrote several emails accepting and declining both of my offers over the last couple of days. I changed my mind back and forth a few times and I'm still not sure I made the right choice but its done and its time to move on to the next phase of this crazy thing called grad school. Good luck everyone
  7. I currently adjunct as well and I have my students call me by my first name. Some like it and it creates a more friendly and open atmosphere in class while others still want the formality of it all and refer to me as either professor and in some cases Dr. I kind of let the students decide what they are most comfortable with and go with it.
  8. Thanks for the input everyone. I can fit most of my stuff in my car or cheaply ship what doesnt fit. Its the high ticket items like a bed and something to sit on that I am mainly concerned about. Obviously there is some time to figure this all out considering I havent decided on a school yet but I like to plan ahead whenever possible.
  9. So I've begun to price the move to potential schools and renting a truck will run me around $1000. So now I'm wondering if it would just be cheaper to sell my stuff here and buy all new stuff when I get to my final destination. Neither option is desirable since I dont really have the funds to do either. Any thoughts?
  10. From what I've been told I wont get credit for the classes (I will still have to take them in my PhD program again) but I do get 30 credits automatically. So while I will be repeating some coursework I will only have to compete 60 more credits.
  11. I saw one person got accepted 2 weeks after the application deadline in January but I havent heard anything and when I emailed asking I never got anything back either. I talked to another person that applied there and she hasnt heard anything either. At this point I'm just going to write them off but it would still be nice to hear something.
  12. I havent made up my mind yet but I just wanted to have advice on how to handle it if I decided to go to the other one. After I scheduled the visit I immediately thought about the awkward position it could put me in if I decided to go elsewhere.
  13. I am visiting one of my top 2 choices the weekend before April 15th so I will have to make the decision while I'm there. How do I politely decline the offer while still asking to be reimbursed for the travel expenses related to the visit that they agreed to pay? I'm not saying I am going to decline for sure but I am having trouble coming up with a way to say thanks for your consideration and bringing me out here but I decided to go with the other school.
  14. So I have 2 highly ranked programs in my field that have both accepted me with great offers and I am having trouble deciding where I should go. The first school offered me an assistantship that pays a pretty good stipend that is for 9 months with no guarantee for the summer funding but its a possibility. There are a couple professors I would like to work with there and could see myself fitting into the department well. The second school offered me an assistantship that pays me slightly more but that is spread over 12 months along with a 1 time supplemental fellowship. There are a couple professors there that I would also like to work with and from what I have gathered I would fit in very well there too. Its a toss up to me which one I would choose...any incite would be greatly appreciated

There are some undergrads that live out there and it will definitely be loud on football Saturdays as you will be near the stadium. If you live a couple miles farther west off campus you will probably find quieter and nicer places for about the same amount of money.
  16. I have an even more frustrating silence. I received an acceptance from a school and responded to both the graduate coordinator and department chair asking to schedule a visit and be put in touch with a current student and I havent heard a thing back in response. This school is falling quickly in my mind.

Thankfully the galleries in town are either on campus or within a few blocks of campus. The major one on campus is the Chazen and the Overture Center which houses the Madison Museum of Art is about 5 blocks from campus on State St.
  18. Only 1 school left to hear from and then the waiting for responses game gives way to the waiting for classes to start game.
  19. As I have received email acceptances I have been responding with a thank you for the congratulations as well as asking to be put in contact with some current graduate students to get their perspective as you make this very important decision. They are generally quick to do so and I have found the information helpful.
  20. When a current grad student emails you asking if you have any questions about an upcoming visit weekend when you weren't invited
  21. I'm visiting next weekend so we'll see what happens
  22. They required to abide by it but rather have an understanding that April 15th is the standard.
  23. I would definitely be prepared to speak with the Professor before class briefly to introduce yourself and quite possibly after. It will be a good opportunity to get to know someone in the program and have them get to know you. Even if it isn't scheduled you should try to have some conversation with them.
  24. Just want to bump this city for this year. My program is a great fit here but I wonder how I will fit into the surrounding community. In Norman especially how much will a VERY liberal person stick out. To put it in perspective I am considered Liberal by Madison, WI standards. Where are good areas to live in with both a quiet atmosphere yet close to some nightlife when the need to unwind arises? Pedestrian friendly?
  25. So last week one of my schools notified me that I had been accepted and asked of I had any questions about the program. I asked to be put in contact with a current grad student to get a better feel for the people that are there. In her introductory email to me she mentioned that the recruitment visit is incredibly important and she highly suggested I go. Now my POI has made no mention of this weekend to me. When I mentioned to the grad student I hadnt heard about it she said that my POI would be the one to give me details. What should I make of that?
