For those curious who feel left out: https://www.fldemo.nsf.gov/grfp/Login.do Check out the officials one too.

My partner gets out of work at midnight and I have to pick her up. What's two more hours?

Didn't see anything going back to 2009-2010. The 2010-2011 Thread reads a bit like this one: "They'd probably send us all an email as an April Fool's joke pretending we got it, then state the REAL date ... ugh."

1. Grading papers 2. Read, write. 3. Be glad that I won't have to grade papers in the fall.

I don't see it either. Not going crazy.

If it doesn't happen tonight, so what? Enjoy the weekend and hope for some time next week. The NSF is several months behind with other awards, it's amazing that the GRFP is even happening relatively on time.

Awards are given a numeric score (that you don't see). If someone in your field does not accept the award, the next highest scored proposal is awarded.

Just so no one freaks out: the correct link is https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/AwardeeList.do?method=loadAwardeeList and it is, as of this post, NOT down. The link by BioBum is missing a command and the script doesn't have a way to handle it, hence the error.

Jesus that game is addicting. I'm supposed to be reading here.

The message comes up the morning the day before and it goes down that night. So if it were to come out on Friday, for example (I'm not saying it will), the message would show up Thursday morning.

I agree with you but I think the last point here needs to be stressed. In the social sciences and humanities TA and RA funding is getting more competitive and much harder to get. Schools that would never have accepted someone without funding are beginning to do so just because they can't get a large enough cohort to keep required courses open. For those in this position (I'm not, although I was accepted to a T25 program without funding and others in my cohort have no funding), awards like the GRFP may be the only viable option to getting a PhD.

1st Authorship as an MSc. (Candidate)
jmu replied to hcoach's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
Editors don't seem to care who is listed first and reviews are blind. If you did the analysis and wrote up the manuscript then you should be first author (unless there is some other reason that, despite this, your PI can still argue that they did more work on the project than you.) -
My next pair of shoes will likely be some canvas Adidas Sambas.

Not only is it not the exact same, the message on there now has appeared at least twice already since the new year. Fastlane goes down for maintenance a lot. It's a system that's used for a lot of things and requires pretty regular upkeep.

RE teaching: We're hiring someone right now and I'm one of the grad student representatives on the committee. The people who got interviews got them because they had experience teaching a certain type of class. We also looked at publication record, funding record, and research fit with the department but these three were definitely interviewed for their teaching experience. RE maintenance: fastlane goes down about once a month for maintenance. This doesn't look like the same notice that's been out before.

You will be able to see the list of all of the awardees here: https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/AwardeeList.do?method=loadAwardeeList Also, if you are awarded it will say "Hello, Fellow!" where it currently says "Hello, Applicant!" They will also email you if, like me, you don't intend to stay up all night waiting to find out.

I found out a dissertation was recently completed very similar to what I proposed. Luckily, I had already started to find a particular aspect more interesting and as I read through the dissertation it seems like they will complement each other rather than conflict. Since the GRFP funds the scholar and not the project I don't think it will be an issue regardless.

I'm hoping for March 28. I have a form due to the graduate school outlining what I've done this year in April. It would be nice to have this on it as completed rather than waiting.

Ft. Lauderdale/Davie covers a huge space that ranges from rich enclaves to working class communities. I'm going to guess you're going to Nova and say that the area is affordable if a bit boring. Broward County is a massive suburban sprawl so boring is pretty normal and comparatively Davie around University Dr. isn't bad. There are a lot of condos and apartments in the area so shop around.

If they are waiting on NSF funding, those weren't due until mid-February and results are usually announced right around three months later. I would agree with obviousbicycle's POI and take a funded offer if you have one on April 15th. Until then, hold tight and wait and see what happens. It's possible too that someone with departmental funding gets the GRFP and frees up a funding line. I know we have people waiting on that here.

Now I feel like I killed this thread. Who all is still waiting and where?

I'm not a political scientist by discipline but I'm reading Jane Bennett's Vibrant Matter right now and finding it a great read. My IR/Poli Sci friends seem to really like it as well.

I agree entirely with fuzzylogician. I just (today) added a paper in preparation to my CV that has been written since November. I didn't think it was ready to read if someone requested it so I didn't put it. I did put the journal it's in preparation for because I think that gives a bit of an idea of what the paper is about and that it's far enough along for me to understand where it fits. (I think finding a good journal to submit to is an art, more so since I've begun reviewing articles.) I agree about acknowledgements. I wouldn't put it but if you played a part on the project that should be there somewhere anyway. Mention the title of the paper there or something. It's more important that you were a part of the project.

It's easy to pile on the hate here but I think it's worthwhile to take a step back and think - maybe these people aren't talking about you? Schools get hundreds of applicants a year. They accept some, they like some but don't accept them, and they hate others. Let's not invalidate their experiences because you are taking something said on a forum four years ago personally. We can see it in the comments here all the time -- not really in anthro or geography per se, but elsewhere -- where students complain about not getting into programs, asking how they can manipulate the school into changing their mind, demanding refunds because they weren't accepted to the program they applied to for the brand and not the fit. We can call those people irrational here but, on the other side, are people who have to be careful with what they say. Assistant Professors who very well could have to uproot their entire lives if they say the wrong thing to the wrong person. They deserve a space to vent. Academia is a place where you have to take risks, you have to put yourself out there, and you're going to get hurt if you're going to make it. It's easy to say that it's unfair and that it shouldn't be that way, and I'd agree if you were to say it, but realize that what you are doing here is no different from what they are doing there: venting to someone at the same stage in the process as they are. It doesn't stop here.
