  1. can we stop infantilizing traditional students by making it sound like an early twenty-something (who may have worked through school) doesnt understand life or cant be just as sure of themselves as you in their chosen life goals?
  2. I was an english / psych double and had a similar super tight / busy schedule, two theses, etc, but it was definitely worth it. Considering I am interested in cog narrative theory and reader response, it has also been a major asset for grad school. Maybe consider keeping the double major, because, as you said, grad school for social sciences is much more likely to produce a job, but holding to the lit research as well opens a lot of doors in terms of interdisciplinary work and making you an attractive candidate both on paper and via breadth and depth of field.
  3. I have a similar circumstance. I am trying to choose between a PhD to pretty good program that I kind of fit into and an MA from a program that I'm a great fit for and could see myself succeeding in and then applying / getting into their PhD program. But of course, getting into a PhD program is never assured; who knows what variables could pop up It seems dumb to turn down a funded PhD for a (better) funded MA, but I think the risk might be worth it if I'm going to like the department a lot more. I don't know how I'm going to decide.
  4. I am seriously considering U of Alberta for MA (which I recieved a very nice funding package for) and they mentioned that, though their space for international PhD students is limited to top candidates (though you have some advantage if you attended as an international MA student there), their funding is generous, 30k+. So I think its unfair to judge Canada as a whole as stingy to international students, though U of A is a singular school in many other ways as well.
  5. I'm one of the rejections, which included the question if I wanted my application considered for MA, and it seems that another one is a rejection + consideration as well. My speculation is that they've notified the PhD candidates they wanted to offer the option to transer their applicaion before the 'normal' rejections/waitlists/acceptances. I emailed and they said MA (which will have a few funded TA spots available) will be notified by the end of the month.
  6. got official acceptance / funding letter from Stony Brook today =)
  7. You'd figure people at this stage in academia would be more sensitive
  8. I DONT feel shitty about self-identifying but when people say things like this is why an application is "desirable" can't you see how I, as a person, feel attacked, cheated, and misunderstood? no one brought it up because no one knows her and has the ability to say anything actually informed about AA in this case
  9. I also got a fellowship nomination for underrepresented students and it's comments like this that still make me feel shitty about it the fuck does it matter to you? what's the point of this comment
  10. lol I just sent the wrong draft of a SOP for a fellowship nomination to the graduate director. it had a professor's comments on it and everything
