  1. This is what I would like to know as well. I just took an ETS powerprep practice test and I scored dramatically higher. However, I don't know if this is because Manhattan is more difficult or I just remembered the exam from when I took it 9 months ago. My math was higher by 3 points and my verbal by 9....
  2. I bought magoosh 2 days ago and I cannot testify if it will help me in the long run, but I am finding their video explanations great. However, their "hard" and "very hard" questions are wicked.

Thanks for this! You are right. I need to stop feeling sorry for myself and move on. I finally received noticed yesterday that I was rejected for funding and the moment I heard I opened a GRE prep book and started working through problems as I was sobbing. Pathetic really.

How does one get re-motivated to study for the GRE again after receiving rejections, wait-lists, and un-funded offers. I'm having a really hard time with it.
  5. I was told last Wednesday I would hear on Friday, I was told on Friday sometime this week. I was told today that if you haven't heard from us yet, then you did not get funding, but awards are still being given out. I am frustrated and tired. This is so freaking ridiculous.
  6. I would classify myself as a "semi-theorist".... Anyways, I doubt it will have much utility for you, but it is vital that you know it. You may have to teach methodology courses one day and in the future you may be interested in a topic that crosses various subfields where actually understanding the material may be vital. Also, if you ever want to leave academia, having statistical knowledge may help you land a job.
  7. I will finally find out my fate on Friday. I am just glad that this awful waiting will be over soon. I've only been waiting for 7 weeks.
  8. This happened to me on both of my waitlists! In one case, a fellow waitlister on gradcafe had told me she was rejected, but they had forgotten to email me so I actually had to ask them about my status... Thanks for this advice. I actually called the admissions office (they don't ask for my name or my dept.) she said possibly next week, so I will wait until next wednesday to call the admissions office again and possibly my advisor.
  9. I emailed my would be advisor and he said early May (what is considered "early"?) and the admissions office said June (however, it was obvious they had no idea what I was talking about). I don't want to be pest, but do you think it would be acceptable to email my advisor after the 10th again (as the suggested date of "early May" doesn't hold after the 10th, or at least I don't think it does)?
  10. Is it normal that I am still waiting to hear about funding and it is May 6th already? I kind of just want to decline my offer and move on with my life already. I got accepted mid March, so my patience is wearing thin.
  11. I don't recommend this book for those who are comfortable with math, but the Cliff Notes, "Math Review for Standardized Tests," is an excellent place to start if you haven't touched math in years! By the old GRE scale just going through this book alone should get you somewhere in the 600s. Of course, everyone wants to be in the 700s, so you need to do more than just this book.
  12. This may be a little early, but I figured someone has to start one. This will be my second cycle unless a miracle happens and I get funding from the very last school I am waiting for. I applied to 7 schools. Got 2 wait-lists, 4 rejections, and 1 acceptance, but waiting for funding (wasn't wait-listed for funding. The school does this weird school-wide rolling admissions/funding thing. If I had turned in my application earlier I wouldn't be in this situation). I know that this has been discussed at length before, but what do you all think about emailing Professors ahead of time? I only emailed one professor and he replied back by changing the subject line to "PhD Applicant?" Yes, I know, extremely rude. There was no need for the question mark. I had decided that I would never email anyone ever again, but when I asked for advice about how to improve my application, a DGS suggested that I actually email a Professor about my research interests/questions I am interested in. Also, would it be a good idea to reapply to programs that you were wait-listed at?
  13. Not a comparativist, but as someone who enjoys studying the global diffusion of international policies (this is an IR topic), you often have to compare completely different regions to figure out what is going on at the global level.
  14. Mostly with US and UK schools. I think the University of Toronto has the best "global reputation" from the other Canadian Universities. It is the one I hear about the most (followed by McGill and UBC) and I think it would be "easier" to come into the US market with a degree from UT than other schools. Having said that, I am not Canadian. If you want to know what universities I've studied at specifically and where I may be heading, feel free to pm me.
  15. I would definitely email them to ask for a status update if you have not heard back from them yet. If I didn't do this for both of my WL, then I would still be waiting around in agony instead of licking my wounds.
  16. Rejected from another waitlist. And once again I was completely forgotten about until I sent a follow up e-mail. Good luck to those still waiting!
  17. Not a theory person, but the University of Toronto jumps to my mind instantly.
  18. I think most of the "action" will take place tomorrow and the 16th. The likelihood of any news we hear being good is slim, so prepare yourself.

  20. Good luck to everyone! Monday will surely be intense!

  23. I hope I didn't offend anyone with my comment! Sorry if I did. I realize that it is a tough decision and I by no means want to rush anyone (though the 15th is only a few days away). I didn't realize that some schools did not have their visitations yet or held them very late. Thanks for the info.
