  1. edited for all the sensitive ones. a person remembering your name isn't a sign. don't read into it more than it is.
  2. Wow, that's pathetic. Both of you.
  3. i actually have something more to add... in my own experiences i believe that subjects that roughly fall under the categories of humanities and social sciences might be a bit more lenient in admitting someone with some deficiencies in their background, compared to someone interested in a subject requiring more technical knowledge and expertise, like the sciences. i base this on two things: 1. all of the applied math programs i'm applying to specifically state on their website that they require a bachelor's degree in either math, physics, or a related math-heavy field, and also many programs look for a strongly related minor. a grad program admitting someone with deficiencies in their undergrad program is supposedly very rare probably because theorems and proofs aren't going to be absorbed through general life experience and casual reading. 2. additionally, i have already done a masters in math education which is an education degree first and foremost, and the program admitted several students who had math deficiencies in their undergrad. so this education program allowed for deficiencies and allowed students to take the extra classes to make up for their background. in other words, in my own experiences i have seen that math and science graduate programs require a strong background. a humanities/social science degree such as math education is much more lenient. in summary, i'd say you have a reasonable shot and it is certainly worth applying.
  4. i dont have an answer to your question, but i would also like to know. i want to go into an interdisciplinary applied math program and study the applications and overlappings of mathematics in astronomy. my major was math and my minor was astronomy. so i'd like to think i'm ok. but i get the feeling that if i wanna take some upper undergrad/grad level courses in astro, that i'm gonna need to go back and take some lower level courses to catch up. (i really regret not having double majored)
  5. perhaps your cat was checking the mail and his email every day for that!
  6. dont worry. many of us have experienced something similar. personally i blew at least $1200 total on apps, transcripts, test scores, post office costs, etc. and i've probably taken a few years off of my life with all the stress.
  7. i'll fill it out, but FYI: i don't believe need-based grants for grad school exist. i already did a masters while being considered a financial independent, and i had very little income. i was only offered loans.
  8. just curious if i need to fill out a FAFSA in order to be eligible for financial awards and stipends from my program. i can't actually recall seeing anything about HAVING to fill out a FAFSA on the websites of any of my programs that i'm applying to. or is a FAFSA only necessary when you have to take out loans?
  9. don't jump the gun here. many of my programs have app deadlines around Feb 1. also, many of the 10 programs i've applied to have told me that they have only just begun looking at apps (aside from maybe 2 that started ealier). i honestly dont expect to hear anything from any of my programs until mid Feb at the earliest.
  10. The threads on this board are really starting to get pathetic. Cick on the email and find out for yourself. Do you really need more information to calm yourself down during the half of a second it takes for the email to load after you've clicked it? if a bunch of people tell you that acceptances usually have email attachments and you get a letter from a school without one, what are you going to do... NOT open it?
  11. without going into the specifics: i already did a terminal masters in a related field but did not feel properly challenged nor intellectually satisfied. i need to go further or else i'll be kicking myself the rest of my life.
  12. the best online game ever http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/g3/bells.htm my high score: 3,072,580 a good runner up: http://www.addictinggames.com/bloxors.html i've finished this twice. great game.
  13. this is the one spot on my application i can actually brag about. perfect 800. however, i was a math major. (unfortunately i didnt do very well on the math subject test. thankfully only 4 of the 10 applied math programs i am applying to requires it.)
  14. i had a telephone interview which resulted in a rejection. i felt 'ok' about the interview when i hung up the phone, but looking back at it i feel even worse and realize some things i just did wrong. i did not present myself how i hoped to. i have learned, and hopefully i have the chance to correct myself this time around. if i were you, i'd write down a whole bunch of questions you think the professor may ask you. then prepare responses. although do not memorize written responses. you don't want to sound like a tape recorder or like you are reciting a speech. just have a general idea of how you'd answer questions about yourself academically and personally.
  15. i won't hear anything for most likely another month. not too nervous yet.
  16. a great pickup line: are your parents retarded? ...because you are so special.
  17. as long as your first 2 references are solid and about your academics, then i'd say it makes a great 3rd or 4th.
  18. I agree COMPETELY! it is frustrating to no end. one of my schools somehow received NONE of my LORs. even though that same school was in the same email as a couple other schools i sent to professors, and all those other schools received my LORs. the amount of time and money i've invested into all of this crap is absurd. especially considering there is no guarantee of getting in anywhere. and the amount of worry brought on by the number of items required all coming from different sources is enough to just about give me a heart attack. somehow i managed to get through it all. i did my best to be as organized as possible on my end. and then i followed up on EVERYTHING. i got tracking from the post office. i sent friendly reminders to my LOR writers. i contacted my previous colleges to make sure transcripts were sent. i called all my programs and made sure everything was received. in the end, everything eventually got to where it needed to be. and yet the worst part is actually after its all over and all you can do is wait for other people to make the call on the rest of your life.
  19. some of you are seriously spazzing out here. "i must have a horrible reputation in the department and i think i completely ruined my chances for getting accepted because i called up and asked about the status of my application and the grad secretary put me on hold for thirty seconds and sounded tired when she responded. also, i never heard her say "you're welcome" after i thanked her! I'M SO SCREWED!!!" calm the hell down, people.
  20. forget about jinxing yourself for a few minutes! me: 2 acceptances/successful waitlists 3 unsuccessful waitlists 6 immediate rejections so overall: 2/11
  21. i still think it is a waste of the OP's time. and i'll bet any ONE person here $100 that the original poster does not get accepted or even waitlisted.
  22. their info regarding acceptance rates is usually pretty spotty.
  23. if you get accepted somewhere, will you be bringing a car with you? ideally, i'd prefer not to have one. i'd probably have money to buy something used, but i just don't want to. i'd like to live within at least two miles of campus near a supermarket. and i'd like to bike to school. is that being unreasonable?
  24. to continue the optimism... plenty of people choose to get a graduate degree because their current employer will pay for it. with a poor economy, less companies will be willing to toss around money like this on their employees. so there ya go, even less applicants again!
  25. indeed. my scores changed as well. i believe the percentiles are updated every year.
