  1. i emailed the department at the university of florida for my decision. she told me to check the website. the website told me to contact the department. :x
  2. i did my undergrad at IU. AWESOME campus! very peaceful and relaxing. there are parks, forests, fields, and streams all over campus. people are really friendly and the cost of living is pretty low. and if you do go, i'd recommend taking up an instrument once you're there. IU has one of the best music schools in the world.
  3. if its just a one year program, then definitely chicago. but 2 years, then you seriously have to way the cost versus benefits. you're talking about $100,000. if you're just getting a masters, i take it you are doing it to get a specific job and NOT because you want to go into academica. then the money issue is probably an important one to you.
  4. i'm sorry to hear about your string of rejections. i hope something good comes along for you soon. i got my first, and so far only rejection yesterday. i kind of felt dazed, like i just got hit in the head except there was no pain on the surface. but i still haven't heard anything from any of my other programs, and at this point i believe its nothing but a mix of rejections and waitlists. no straight-up acceptances.
  5. 3. they tell you you're not a good fit because they just don't have any professors in the field of "you suck" 2. your rejection letter has an accompanying laugh track 1. next year's updated admissions requirements include the requirement that the applicant not be you
  6. thanks for the kind words. good luck to you as well!
  7. and the jinxing of myself has begun! i got my first response today and it was a rejection. :x :x funny enough, it was from a canadian school. my only non-american school got back to me faster than any american schools. thankfully it was one of my reach schools too, so i guess i shouldnt feel too bad.
  8. i think that the "you must do what is right for you" line was a reference to the fact that perhaps students email for their status because they have already been given offers from other schools which are also requesting decisions on the student's behalf sooner rather than later. it was probably just a copy and paste email given to lots of students.
  9. somebody tell me i'm not the only "results virgin" here.
  10. huh? i went to the "results search" page and checked out the results for my discipline from last year. assuming the results are accurate, there did not seem to be any greater percentage of rejects vs. admits later in the process (march and april) compared to earlier in the process (january and february). in other words, it aint over til its over. although after april 15th the odds drop off sharply.
  11. thats scary, but i'll admit to having similar thoughts about somebody doing that to me because they hacked my email account or something.
  12. i'm probably jinxing myself here, but i havent heard a peep and i find it hard to believe i've been rejected straight across the board by 11 programs.

it can be like that SUBWAY song Five... Five Apps... Five Apps re-jec-teeed.
  14. i did the 'teaching english abroad' thing last year. not as awesome as i hoped. and i think it actually hurt my application because my intended field of study has next to nothing to do with foreign cultures so i have a feeling it looks like i wasted a year of my life gallivanting around SE asia.
  15. maybe your TOEFL score? i kid. its just a tough year financially for everybody. there's no getting around that.

i'm sorry you guys. i haven't heard a single thing yet and i'm so nervous, worried, annoyed, scared, and jittery. its like something MUST be wrong at this point. no responses from 11 schools. what gives?
  17. ^^^ thank you for that. i'm guessing the majority of my programs must be on a similar timeline considering i've heard ZERO from any of them at this point.
  18. if it makes you feel any better, i BOMBED the GRE math subject test. and i've yet to hear a response from any of my 11 schools.
  19. one summer i was given a TA position and told something similar. i worked an outside job anyways. i never said anything. no one found out. not sure how they would anyways.
  20. i see no harm whatsoever in sending a short and simple email: "I was wondering if you could tell me if there has been any update on the status of my application?" Do you honestly think that the grad secretary is going to run over to the DGS's office and say "Mrs. X had the nerve to inquire about her application" and then the DGS will stick your app in the paper shredder while they both laugh maniacally? On the flip side, just don't email them multiple times a day, everyday for weeks.
  21. you can always get an apartment in the suburbs off of the metra line. a bit cheaper, safer, and cleaner. i dont know what schools you are exactly referring to, but the University of Chicago is in a less than stellar neighborhood. and UIC is a few blocks away from a horrible neighborhood as well.
  22. i hear about people emailing to find out, and it seems like its mostly either bad news or no news. so what has been YOUR success rate of inquiring via email? or of your friends?
  23. dont they still see all of your scores? so by saying which one they "take", they really mean which one they apply when making initial cuts based on numbers, i'm assuming. but after that, whats to stop them from taking all your scores into account when deciding admittance? if they are all printed on the same page and can clearly see either zero improvement or minimal improvement, surely that means something to them?
  24. i'm gonna wait at least 1 more week. things should certainly pick up in march!
  25. i'm freaking out about the fact i've still heard NOTHING.
