i took 1.5 years off, did a masters, and will have been out of school for another 2.5 years before i start back up again this fall. a little time off ain't bad, as long as you do something productive.

there seems to be a good number of sites set up for this, but does anybody have any reliable experience with any one of them in particular? any additional advice is welcome.

i've been accepted to UF for math and i'll be starting in the fall. anybody looking for a roommate?

in all honesty, i think they have a good system. they use the Embark system. perhaps other schools use it, i dont know. but it actually has a grid full of reasons for denial, and then certain boxes are checked indicating your specific reasons for denial. out of 10 schools this is the only school that has given me reasons for my rejection. its pretty informative actually. it'd be nice if every school did this.

thank you so much! and thanks to everyone else too! and for everyone else still waiting, i wish you the best and dont give up!

thank you i'm still kind of in shock. i was getting all depressed from my stack of rejections and i was getting ready to put together my resume and start looking for work. and then out of habit from over the past 2 months i did one of my repetitive email checks and surprise!

quick and happy update: one app which i had assumed at this stage of the game to be a rejection (based on zero communication until and past april 15th) turned out to be a fully funded offer!
-
thanks for all the support and all the congrats, guys! seriously, i had given up all hope on the last couple of schools that i hadn't heard a peep from. i had simply assumed rejection. moral of the story: it ain't over til its over.

i got the miracle i was hoping for!!! don't lose hope guys, it can happen!

i was in a similar boat. i was/still am looking into getting a PhD in applied/interdisciplinary math and i was out of school for about 3 years before i took the GRE math subject test. i applied to 10 schools this year and only 4 required the GRE subject test. i don't necessarily think that just the schools that think they are more 'prestigious' require the GRE subject test. if anything, its really a mixed bag. and i think its more about the philosophy of the department and whether they have faith in the GRE subject test as an accurate indicator of success. then again, some schools just have a certain "official protocol" that requires it, but that it is usually not taken as a serious indicator of succss. what i can say with confidence, is that it does seem that schools whose applied math track is a part of their math department are more likely to require it. whereas schools that have separate applied math departments seem to be less likely to require it, since the GRE is almost entirely pure math and very little applied math. anyways, i studied pretty hard for it and i ended up doing very poorly. just like you, modern algebra, analysis, and topology are not my strong points, and that was more than a third of the test. thankfully, only 4 of the schools i applied to required it. unfortunately i had a really tough year and was rejected all across the board. so perhaps my advice on whether or not YOU should take it isnt all that reliable. however, taking it and doing well can certainly never hurt, whereas taking it and doing poorly probably wont help either.

well, if it makes you feel any better just check out my signature. all that time, energy, and money spent into GREs, LORs, SOPs, transcripts, and grad application forms. all for naught. ...talk about having a door slammed in your face! a lot of us know how you feel, but just realize that having to wait another year or two isn't that big of a deal.

Rude Admissions Behavior (outside of rejection letters)
frankdux replied to zoberg's topic in Waiting it Out
i called up one school i hadn't heard a peep from. this is the conversation, nearly word for word: secretary: math department, ******* university frankdux: i was wondering if you could tell me the status of my application. --about 3 or 4 seconds of silence-- secretary: well... i guess its not even worth asking your name. have you received an offer from us? frankdux: no secretary: well, then that's a rejection. she didnt even bother asking my name. what friendly service. :x -

Soon to be law school dropout...help!
frankdux replied to misrablelawstdnt's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
starting at 50k as a math teacher? what? perhaps with a masters and in a really upscale neighborhood. but first year teacher salaries typically aren't even in the 40k range. hell, the national average salary of a high school teacher is only in the mid 40k range. -

in which the "thread" is most likely a post-april 15th decision on whether or not you'll get off the waitlist and into the program, and you have no other acceptances at this point? i've got 5 schools i still haven't been given a decision from. although its possible that i've already been rejected by a few of them at this point since i havent been told anything. but a couple of them i know i'm on the waitlist for.

i believe the OP meant that he isn't allowed to apply for support until his undergrad is complete. so he wont be able to actually apply for support for the fall until this summer, whereas those who graduated earlier were able to apply for financial support for the fall when they sent in their applications. basically he's asking if we think they'll even be any funding left for him since so many others will have already been awarded something. as far as an answer to the OP's question, i have no idea.
