  1. Slack GroupMe Google sheet chat There's also a facebook group, although I'm not in it, and the subreddit, which is much less active.
  2. For those who aren't on the other platforms, France, Cyprus, and India have posted.
  3. Someone just posted a finalist notification for a community-based combined grant in Austria!
  4. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Cd86U9AreH9k_-WKLKnLCLn_C5MC3FKvZZ9RhlqSAq4/edit?usp=sharing
  5. You don't need permission to edit the notifications tab, and you can add to the chat once you get down to the current conversations (currently around row 2000).
  6. You can find all the historical final notification dates, this year's applicants, and a chat thread in this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Cd86U9AreH9k_-WKLKnLCLn_C5MC3FKvZZ9RhlqSAq4/edit#gid=2001832949 Feel free to add yourself to this year's tab!
  7. Remember that not getting an email just means that they got your transcript and processed it right the first time!
  8. Gotta have backups of our backups!
  9. I'm making a copy of it now, so at least we'll have one we can keep clean. I'll play with permissions and see what the options are.
  10. They just did it again. Who actually owns the document? Perhaps we should just lock it.
  11. I'm restoring it again, but it'll be a recurring problem now that someone's figured out they can do this (and that we'll react).
  12. There's been some discussion of this reddit post on the spreadsheet chat. It sounds like the significance of it might be overblown -- some Fulbright advisors have told their applicants that this won't actually affect notification dates this year. I figured I'd post it here anyway, since there's a troll in the spreadsheet deleting the link.
  13. Update for those of us with missing degrees on print transcripts: I called just now, and I didn't have to wait at all for a real person. (I heard that earlier the lines were super busy.) The lady I spoke with was able to look up my transcript and verify the missing degree, and I don't have to send anything in. I sent an email two days ago and still haven't gotten a response, but this was very quick and easy.
  14. Yes, there are a few of us over on the spreadsheet chat who got that email. From all of our cases, it sounds like it's probably an administrative error. I've emailed my Fulbright advisor and responded to the email. My advisor's advice was to get in touch with them immediately, and if I don't hear anything soon, she'll get in touch with them. Edited to add that it sounds like Fulbright's just now processing transcripts. Some people who sent electronically through their transcript companies got emails that the links had expired since they'd been sent.
  15. There are a whole lot of things with which to be dissatisfied in academia, but this one seems to be pretty harmless. I also note that you have yet to offer an alternative.
  16. They change, but not all that much. Under the interpretive data section in the link, you'll find the percentiles for the 2011-2012 batch of tests, that should give you what you need to know. http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores/understand/
  17. I've seen the list of blogs over in the Lobby, but I thought it might be nice to get some history-oriented blogs out there. Mine's in my signature, although I just started it, so it's pretty sparse.
  18. Related question -- I'm in a combined MA/PhD program. Should I just put the MA on my CV until I start my PhD coursework? Should I put the combined degree on there? I'm not really sure what the etiquette is there.
  19. Here's the girls' "dressing the part" thread in Officially Grads. It's got several pages of really useful stuff in it.
  20. I wound up accepting my program, banking on finding funding in the next year or so, but I didn't receive any funding for first year. But I just received an email last week from my DGS (who's been great about keeping me informed about stuff) about a scholarship from the Office of Graduate Education for students who don't have any other funding. It's not a lot -- 6 credits a year. But it's definitely more than I was expecting, and it comes out to about $6500. I would email your school's OGE and see if there's anything similar. I know we always expect to receive program or department funding, but if you cast a broader net, the school might be able to get you something.
  21. I've been considering starting a blog, but I hadn't gotten off my butt to do it yet. You all have inspired me, so here's my shiny new blog! http://megsma.wordpress.com/
  22. I've found an apartment and a job, and I'm all registered for classes! I'll be moving myself and my dog 8 1/2 hours on Saturday so we can get all settled in before I start working for the summer. I plan on drinking lots of beer (since St. Louis is flowing with the stuff, I've heard) and finding some good music, plus decorating my new pad. As far as reading goes, I asked my advisor what I should be doing to prepare, and he basically said to just take it easy for the summer -- there's lots of work in my future! I do plan on getting a head start on a couple textbooks that look interesting, but mostly I want to catch up on some good fiction. I've already read a few while procrastinating my packing, and it's such a nice change! Does anyone know what classes they'll be in in the fall? I've got the basic historiography class, a class on Christians and Muslims in medieval Spain, and a "history by the numbers" class that deals with maps and things.

I've successfully found an apartment in Carondelet, which I'll be moving into on Saturday! It is possible to find cheap, dog-friendly housing, but you sacrifice space to do it. I didn't realize how small 600 sq ft was until I was standing in it. But even though it's smaller than where I am now, it's more than enough for my needs. I'll be around all summer, working part-time, so if anyone wants to meet up, shoot me a message!
  24. I'm moving my dog 8 1/2 hours on Saturday. He wasn't crate-trained up to this point, so for the last couple weeks, I've been slowly getting him used to being in his box -- lots of treats, a positive tone of voice when putting him in there, long walks as soon as I get home, etc. He's adapted pretty quickly, and I hope it'll make the process easier for me and less traumatic for him. I'm planning on stopping every hour or hour and a half, which will make the trip longer, but should keep him more comfortable. Also, if you're renting a U-Haul, the trailers are far cheaper than the trucks for long distance moves, since the trucks charge by the mile. The only thing to consider is how much your vehicle can tow. My sedan can't do very much, but my boyfriend' jeep has all the capacity we need for a 6'x12' trailer, at nearly half the price of a much smaller truck.
