Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
PsycD replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
The people who give me the most grief about it are married and miserable, and we all know that misery loves company. I'm sure many of them are looking at us saying, "Damn...I wish I could do that!" -

Don't get me started... Just wait until you hit your 30s and everyone starts looking at you with a look of pity as if to say, "Oh you poor, poor thing...you're not married yet, so you have nothing else better to do with your life than pursue an advanced degree." -
Social Psychology Fall 2014 Applicants

Some freely share their POI when asked and don't think much of the request. Others find the question intrusive and think it's no one else's business. -

I have no words for some of these comments. I'm so relieved to have this thread to know that it's not just happening to me. When people say crazy things to me (about once a week), I just try to remember that most of them are totally clueless about the whole process and many have not pursued post-bac education. They're just trying to be...helpful? Encouraging? Supportive? -
Professors know each other pretty well. Ask someone else in the department what your LOR writers like. I used to work for the wife of one of my LOR writers, so I'm asking her for suggestions.

A bottle of wine. A gift card to their favorite restaurant. A spa gift card (for the women). A friend of mine who was an artist painted a picture for each of her LOR writers. Starbucks gift cards (almost everyone likes those).

Same here. I don't know that I'll be very sad about it, though. I'm over the emotional roller coaster of it all. It's starting to feel like a bad relationship...I no longer care how it ends, I just want it to be over.

1) Get over it. 2) Go on a road trip. 3) Relocate to a place with awesome weather and/or awesome people. 4) Continue being my cool, kick-ass self. 5) Start a new career. 6) Date...a LOT. 7) Enjoy life.

Wow....just...wow lol gotta love the parents! -
I'm proud of you for only checking hourly. I think I refresh the results screen about every 5 minutes. I am also curious about how the process works with Canadian schools.
-
Good luck to you, too! Congrats on your two interviews!

Tomorrow I plan to indulge in lots of football, beer, and unhealthy food to distract me from this grad school purgatory.

Sometimes when admissions decisions are made, instead of contact applicants personally, school's will send applicants an email instructing them to "Check the Website." "Checked the Website" simply means that the applicant logged onto the graduate application portal to obtain the update/decision on their application.

Same here! I am def getting my money's worth out of that.

I'm in the same boat. It doesn't help that my job involves sitting in front of the computer all day, which allows me to continue my psycho-checking of email and the results board. My Cheez-Its addiction helps, but my pants are getting tighter. I'm going to have to come up with a better coping mechanism. I was hoping to get some good ideas from everyone else on what I can do to keep myself distracted.
