  1. I am considering going back to school for an MFT or MSW here in California so I can practice as a therapist. However, I am an American and British citizen who will likely move back to England at some point given I have some family in the country and was partially raised there. So I am just wondering if there's any American therapists on here who have moved to England and managed to qualify with the BPS, and how that whole process worked? If not, does anybody have an idea what to do in my situation? Are the qualifications about the same? Or would I have to re-train entirely/do a year extra if I moved back to London? If anybody could give me any advice, that would be brilliant. Thanks so much!!!
  2. My third professor writing me a letter literally just backed out and the deadline is in a month. I have a TA who knows me very well willing to write me a letter, but I am wondering if this will be ok? I am applying to Journalism school so was wondering as it is a preprofessional program if a letter from a non-PhD would work?
  3. Hi, This isn't for me but for my relative currently under care experiencing illness. Apparently he emailed his professors for recs two weeks ago and now due to sudden illness no longer feels he can apply for grad school right now and is re-evaluating everything at the moment - including career paths. We're trying to figure out a way to email his professors and let him know he will no longer be applying but to keep the recs on file - how does one go on doing this without looking completely unprofessional? Some of the professors knew him well, but a few did not. Has anybody had experience with this? Given the nature of his illness (he had a breakdown - long story), he feels uncomfortable revealing why exactly he is not applying at the moment so we can't really email telling them about that. Any advice or recs on how to go on about doing this would be appreciated. Thank you so much.
  4. I spent about 2.5 months preparing properly and used Princeton Review, Manhattan, and Magoosh. I struggle with migraines from time-to-time and as I forgot my reading glasses at home the day of the test, I think it triggered one off on the day itself. Specifically towards the end of the second half of the test. I do remember being unable to focus very well in the final Math exam and the experimental section as it was very painful to look at the screen and made me feel nauseous. This has happened once before on a practice test like two months ago, but I thought I was ok as it never happened again. I talked to most of the departments (still waiting on one) and most of them said not to re-take as it'll not affect my admission chances given I have a high GPA (3.8) from UC Berkeley and the verbal was good. One said there was a very, very tiny chance it'd affect merit-based scholarships/fellowships while another said he wasn't certain, but he didn't think it would be that big of a deal, although he couldn't guarantee anything. The general consensus was to not re-take but focus my attention now on creating superb SOPs and recs....still a little concerned about it even possibly affecting merit-based funds/fellowships though...
  5. Yeah, I think I'll contact them. Looking at their websites, they either state there is no minimum score or "the application is looked at holistically". One simply states the candidate should have above a 160 for Verbal, but mentions nothing about Quantitative. Another stated that while there was no minimum score, the average scores for those admitted is usually 156 for Verbal and 150+ Quantitative. I hope these are good signs Quant isn't as important? Yes, I was training with Manhattan and Magoosh and getting betwen 153-156 on those practice exams for Quantitative, so this was rather upsetting =/
  6. Hi guys, I literally just took the exam. I scored a 163 in Verbal but a 143 in Quantitative. The bad Q score is mostly due to the fact I got sick during the break so took awhile to come back into the testing center, by which point the test had already resumed. Thing is, I am applying to top Journalism programs, so not certain how badly the Math score will be held against me. Should I re-take or should I be ok? I'll have the writing scores in a few weeks obviously, but I feel pretty strongly about it. Was getting 5s/6s/ on practice essay exams with Princeton Review...
  7. I'm so sorry! Didn't realize couldn't do that. To anybody else: Any advice regarding the content of the posts??
  8. Hi, I am a recent UC Berkeley graduate interested in applying for a Masters in International Relations and related subjects. I finished Berkeley with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 and I studied Political Science with a specialization in International Relations. I have not yet taken the GRE but in my practice tests so far I've been scoring 161-166 in Verbal and 152-156 in Quantitative. I really have no relevant significant work experience; I initially wanted to work in communications for a political/social justice non-profit, so have a lot of internships related to that at some leading charities, many of which are related to women's rights activism. (Passionate about international gender issues and want to pursue a career related to that.) Also lead two social justice related students groups (ie like Amnesty Intl) and wrote for on-campus publication devoted to MENA/South Asian issues. I speak Hindi and some Spanish. Currently work in communications for two small charities/semi-political non-profits, one of which is a well-known charity dedicated to ending sexual violence worldwide. As I am a UK/US citizen, I am looking into programs in England the USA. Only problem is, while I've been told experience doesn't matter so much for the top UK programs, it does for the US? Do I have a shot at any of these right now? Or should I wait it out? And if I do wait it out, what kind of things should I do to strengthen my resume? Also, I transferred from a lesser university to Berkeley. I developed much stronger relationships at my first university, a smaller one, but with not as prestigious faculty like the ones I knew at Berkeley. Which should I ask for references from? US unis I'm interested in: Georgetown, George Washington, UCSD, John Hopkins, Columbia, American, Princeton *Suggestions for others unis, particularly ones that specialize in gender, would be great! UK unis I'm interested in: LSE, SOAS, UCL (Human Rights), KCL, Oxford Thanks so much for the help!
  9. I just graduated with a degree in Political Science from UC Berkeley back in December and am really interested in applying to Journalism school this fall, but I really have no relevant experience. I was wondering if people could tell me which good schools I should aim for, and which of these I might have a shot at: Medill, Univ of Maryland, CUNY, NYU, Columbia, Berkeley (that one I know for sure I don't given I know its rep for only taking on experienced professionals), Syracuse, Missouri. As said, if you can suggest any more, that would be great. Any advice on how to boost my resume would be much appreciated as well. Thank you! GPA: I was a transfer so there are two. UC Berkeley: 3.67/Other College: 4.0 for a cumulative GPA of a 3.8 (I know law schools add these up, but not sure about Journalism?) Experience: Nothing really, as said. I did apply for summer internships at organizations and will apply for ones in the fall too. At school I contributed a few articles to an on-campus publication devoted to MENA/South Asian issues, I recently started writing articles for three websites, I worked for one year as the Social Media Associate of a prominent body image website, did Social Media work for another site, worked as a Media Outreach intern on a reputable documentary, was the president of two social justice groups, and did some overseas volunteer work. I'd occasionally sit-in on some of the classes at Berkeley's Journalism School in my last semester, but I've not actually taken any relevant classes.
