thanks for letting me know! they also emailed me to give me that information! I really wanna go, but I just realized it's right in the middle of the week, which makes it really hard about your question between MSU and CUNY: I'm not sure, I honestly haven't heard anything about the MSU program nor any of the faculty... if you're interested in sentence processing specifically, I'd definitely have to go with CUNY. Also, they have lots of psycholinguists in other departments as well (psychology and speech, language and hearing sciences), which is a plus.

hahahah isn't that funny?? I had the same thing happen... it's soooo weird to know you're being googled. I proceeded to check every single result that comes up for my name, just in case

Congrats everyone!!! So good to hear so many good news! :) Unless you're 100% sure of where you want to go, I'd suggest you should investigate your options. I'm learning a lot about the programs I applied to through the interviews/visiting days, and in some cases it has really made an impact on how I feel about them...

NRC, did you happen to get information about travel reimbursements for the open house?
-
Also, if it's on the website, I'm sure you're formally accepted! was it the MA or the PhD? maybe they do things differently for each...
-
thank you! and congrats!!! that's great!!

Congrats yeonju123!!! I got waitlisted at CUNY and invited to their open house, however they made no mention of travel reimbursement... so maybe they're only paying for the people who actually got admitted to go? could you let me know if they offered any reimbursements? I'd love to come to the open house, but I'm afraid I my grad student budget might not allow it

thank you!! that's really sweet of you

*get THAT information, not "their information"

Most schools are trying to cut down on their acceptances, as they're trying to only take in students that they'll be able to fund for the whole five years... and U of Oregon is a public school, so I'd assume that (along with all other public schools) they're probably strapped for cash. @uminiah2013: most schools admit between 5-10 students per cycle, so I think most professors would take one, maybe two students (if any, really). The best advice I got regarding applications (I know it's too late for that now... but maybe it will help anyone applying in the future) was to contact all my POIs before the applications period and ask them if they're looking for new students. Sometimes they're not, and if you can get their information, it might save you the trouble of applying to that particular place. Sometimes this first contact leads into an interesting conversation, exchange of emails, etc. It's always worth it.

Hi umniah! I wasn't accepted, they're still in the decision-making process... I was invited to their interview day, but because of the snow storm, I'm afraid I don't have much to tell you about it. I'm very upset because I was looking forward to visiting... but, the weather is the weather. My writing sample was a 20-page excerpt from my MA thesis (the same I sent all schools). I'm not sure how to determine which program is more competitive... they're both very competitive overall, and in the end I think it depends mostly on who you'd like to work with and how your experience and interests match theirs. No worries - feel free to send me a private messages with any questions you'd like!

It's Brown!

Parking in downtown is a nightmare! Plus, it's kinda far from the SDSU campus. North/Park and Hillcrest are both really great neighborhoods, closer to campus, full of cool restaurants/bars... I live in Normal Heights, which is in between North Park and SDSU (some people still call the area North Park), and I highly recommend it, it's slightly cheaper and you still get to reap all the benefits.

Yeah it's only a day long! I think it does make sense that they would not bring people from outside the country in this case. Also, it usually takes them a long time to send out notices, so I'm sure this thing is just one of many steps before they make any decisions...

Sorry Antecedent!! I recently got an email from their DGS about their open house, which should be this Friday (7th)... but I won't be able to make it... I don't think it necessarily means it's a rejection, though, specially if you're not currently in the U.S. - maybe they just can't cover travel expenses for international flights!

Hi folks! Is anyone here attending the UCSD Open House this week? Or the one at Brown (CLPS)?
-
Inertia: I don't think the question was bad at all, and although we worry a lot about things like this, I'm sure the Prof will have forgotten all about it by tomorrow- so don't worry. Vickysophie: I don't think it's possible to defer for that long but I agree with Hoviariel that the best to do is talk to your POI. If you do have to make a choice between the two, I'd say think about what works best for the career path you want...

Hi! I'm going to the open house in Maryland, I'd be glad to send you any info. I wasn't contacted by Chicago, but on the search results shows that last year someone was accepted after an interview, so it's a good sign!
