FSU funding tends to be liveable but not fabulous. I've never known anyone in polisci there but I know folks in communication and geography.

Nope, not talking about UNC. UT-Austin and I'm not sure where they're ranked. The rankings are old (the 96 NRC rankings are still used) but I'm sure UT is top-15. And that figure was for the department so no clue how it breaks down between MA and PhD students... Oh-dee-well. Twice applied, twice rejected. I clearly am not meant to be a Longhorn. Which is fine by me! -

You know, it's nice to know that a school doesn't think you're good enough twice. Wasn't good enough for the master's. Not good enough for the PhD. Though they said they were highly selective admitting 20% of applicants with complete files. WTF? 20% seems crazy high to me! Oh well. I'm in the other 80%. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it since I didn't think I'd get in there anyways (my advisors here were not keen on my potential advisor there). -
Maybe this is the week. I got a response today and it wasn't a favorable one.

Oh, I totally agree. And they are top-10 I suppose. But I'd rather be elsewhere in the top 10 these days. And rankings do matter. They help you get a job. -

Ah, UNC. I never quite found out why I got rejected for the MA but I suspect it was for similar reasons. I ended up not applying there this time because Wendy Wolford wasn't taking new students. Plus she got all rude when I wrote her an email saying I'd emailed her 2 years ago and so she just attached that email to her reply rather than answering my questions. So then I had to email her again to ask if she was taking new students. She wrote back with one word "No". Gah, there was no need for the rudeness. And it's a shame. Steve Walsh had gotten me all excited about UNC. -
I'm not a superstar. I'm still waiting. And I hope I'm not waiting until April 15. But, since the national conference is then... I guess I could tell the school of my choice in person.

I haven't gotten into UGA. I'm still waiting to hear from them but I also know that once they do meet as a committee, which isn't even scheduled yet, I'll hear right after things are decided.

That IS an unusual background. How interesting. Are you interested in legal history at all? We can start a convo about global health policy if you want! It's not my field but it fascinates me.

Ah, UNC. They rejected me when I applied there for a MA too. Who did you want to work with? -
I think most of the folks that hear from Ohio State this early are nominated for fellowships. Or maybe just on the social science side.

2008 Anthro PhD Applicants

You visited prior to applying? Now that's dedication! -
heh, i didn't think nik was taking any new students this year... i'm going to study political ecology/economy and the social relations of development and production. hopefully.
-
I think folks in previous years have handled it as you did.
-
Oh I totally found out I was accepted to Ohio State two years ago because I checked the online site repeatedly.
-
But who wants to be a Seminole?
-
Who are you interested in working with at UGA? Any news on funding? Also, what's your specific interest? I'm curious, especially since you applied to anthropology programs too. Are you interested in working with Setha Low at CUNY by any chance?

You may want to try posting this in the Sociology 2008 thread...

This belongs over in "Government Affairs" which is part of the menu.

You and I have opposing takes on this, I guess. They have no say but they do have your file. They know what's missing, if you're being advanced for a fellowship, etc.
-
You may actually want to post this as a separate announcement where everyone can see it. I had the same trouble and it took me a minute to think of clearing my cookies. I know someone over in the polisci thread mentioned the same trouble...
-
I had some trouble logging in yesterday too. I deleted the cookies, restarted my browser, and all was well. Try it maybe?

I never said it wasn't. That's actually what a large part of my problem with Princeton is. That and the seeming ignorance of the low wages the University pays to essential staff. Oh and people ignoring the fact that there are lots of immigrants needing assistance (as in, undergrads go tutor in Trenton but not at the public schools in Princeton).

For whatever reason, mine didn't start showing up in gray until yesterday. I changed it back to blue because I think gray is too depressing given some of the topics on this forum...
