  1. CONGRATS!!! I've been on vacation and finally got a much needed break from the site. No news for me yet but I am so happy for you!!
  2. Congrats! And I echo Maleficent...details please dysphoriablues! Another school high on my list.
  3. Hey...I am TOTALLY there with you. I almost applied at age 23, but I decided to start working in academia in other ways instead. I am now 30 and just applied to *11* programs that I thought were a great fit, too. I have worked very hard to get to where I am, like you have, I am sure. And you know what? It's going to happen for us. It is WAY too early to throw in the towel. Most of your programs haven't even notified yet. Honestly, we could both get an acceptance any time between now and April. If something completely nuts happens and we are both sitting here on May 1st saying "now what...?" We will have 7 months to get a leg up on next year. Hang in there! And take a break from this site for a few days. Sometimes you have to stop checking your email, stop looking for the phone to ring, and ban yourself from checking your application status. It only stresses you out more.
  4. Details on the UCLA waitlist would be great! Did you email them or did they email you, etc, etc? Thanks all!
  5. It could mean so many things. I would advise you to NOT fill up their inbox with too many emails. Give them 2-3 days to respond and THEN call.
  6. Congrats to everyone with Stanford acceptances so far. I've heard that the funding packages from last year were extremely generous and VERY competitive. I still have hope, but the second I saw those pop up in the Results section, my stomach dropped. It would be REALLY great to hear from *one* of my top choices. Fingers crossed I'll be joining you guys with good news soon. Really trying to take a break from the site for a day or two. That said, I'll probably see you all at 9a.
  7. Yep, got on to post the same question liangingging!
  8. I don't think you should say goodbye based on this. It's definitely not ideal. If apps were due in mid-January, the department may have met...but maybe not. Most programs allow a week or two for items to roll in (GRE, LoRs) so you MAY be okay. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
  9. Busy day on the results section. Congrats to all!
  10. I wasn't a Soc major in undergrad, but I have had a tremendous experience with the Sociology faculty since making the decision to apply for graduate programs in their field. I'm talking...one of the top faculty members had dinner with me at the ASA meeting last summer and then reviewed my personal statement in the fall, another reviewed my writing sample, and two more provided advice throughout the process. A lot of the faculty here have connections at UChicago and wanted to develop a really collaborative department at Northwestern. The weekly colloquia is fantastic and our grad students have access to additional conference funds, publishing opportunities, etc. I have had tremendous mentoring in and out of the Sociology department and in retrospect, I'm probably an idiot for not applying here. Ha ha. BUT...I do feel strongly about going somewhere else at this point. I've been in the Northwestern/Chicago community for about 6 years now, so it's time to head south. Or west. Or east. TBD. Good luck! If anyone has specific questions about Northwestern faculty or department, message me individually and I am happy to provide my honest opinion.
  11. Ha ha ha. No. The legal decision came after my apps were submitted. Or at least, I found out about it after my apps were submitted.
  12. Can't speak to the Chicago program because I'm a Northwestern alum. :-)
  13. Thanks so much! I'm not sure that my research interests are a great fit for CU Boulder but I applied for location and a specific faculty member I met at a conference a few years ago. We will see. All you need is 1 "accept" right? Fingers crossed mine will be here soon so I can get off this site for more than 2 hours at a time. Seriously, though, congrats on your interview! I wish more departments did them in Soc.
  14. NewGrad....gotta love the Nebraska connection! Congrats!
  15. Boulder....anyone? Didn't expect them to be doing interviews, but alas, someone just posted. (And yes, I'm double posting this in both threads. Sorry!)
  16. Can someone give details on the CU Boulder interview? I wasn't expecting anything from them so early, but I see that it was just added to the results....so of course, freaking out a little bit.
  17. I almost posted about this yesterday and then when it came up today in a different thread, I wanted to put it out there. I am currently in a serious, long-term relationship. One which the graduate school application process has put a big strain on...or perhaps, one that has flaws that have been exposed as a result of this process? It's hard to say at this point. Either way, the result is that in the middle of one of the biggest transitions of my life, I'm also having to decide whether or not this is a relationship I want to put effort into during graduate school. I know that the first few years are going to be extremely challenging and I find myself wondering if it wouldn't be easier to go through the transition alone. Anyone else going through this?
  18. Oh my gosh....are we living parallel lives? I am going through the same thing. I almost started a thread about the graduate school process and relationships yesterday. Anyway, I am so happy that things are looking up for you. Keeping my hope alive!
  19. Maleficent, that's MAGNIFICENT!!!! I have been thinking about you a lot since you've been in the same boat as I am with UCLA. I am so happy for you!
  20. Wow. Just checked this out. I've worked in central administration for the last 6 years and I definitely see some familiar names/faces of professors. Way to put it out there, people. Ha ha.
  21. It's been a year (and a day) since this came out....but I think we could all use it. Good luck you guys!
  22. I don't know why no one is responding but I can guarantee that you are most definitely NOT alone. None of my programs do interviews, but as a few schools acceptances are starting to pop up in the results search and mine are not? Yeah......you are *definitely* not alone. Hang in there!
  23. I know people are probably a little sketched out to do so, but it is so helpful to see what the departments expect regarding the GRE. As much as we are told, "it is just one component of the application," it's good to have a sense of the program history with the GRE scores. Thank you so much guys! And congrats to everyone with acceptances!
  24. I'm counting 8 and I still have hope! There were a few late notifications last year AND just because someone is accepted...doesn't mean it will be the right fit for them. Until I get a rejection notice, my UCLA hopes are still alive!
  25. Congratulations! Here's hoping mine is on the way. Ha ha.
