Rutgers - when could I expect to hear back?
SocInTheCity replied to Mr. Wizard's topic in Waiting it Out
Did you check the results search from last year: http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=cognitive+psychology+rutgers Not sure if they are doing an open house this year or doing straight acceptances, but it looks like people didn't know for sure until March last year. Good luck! -
The good news is....it's the weekend so we can relax for 48 hours knowing that no one will probably be contacted over the weekend. Right?
-
Thanks GretaGarbo for the info on UCB. I do not expect to be able to make an informed decision before March anyway but I am anxious to hear from a few places so I can see how things will pan out.

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
SocInTheCity replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
People who don't understand what it means for a department to have 200+ applications for 20 spots: "I'm sure you'll get in to ALL of the schools you apply to." Me: Blank Stare -
Wow!!! You're right. Fingers crossed 1 of my 11 comes soon! I'm starting to get anxious.
-
I'm glad you got this too. I was also expecting Feb. 1-8 so when I saw Natasha's name come up in my inbox, my stomach did a flip. I'll be anxious to hear from them specifically.

I oversee a PhD Prep program at a highly selective university. I'd like to respond to this thread but am pressed for time. I''ll get back to you shortly.
-
I'm curious about the timing of the visit days, as well as which schools do them and which schools don't. They don't usually list this on the website. Anyone admitted Fall 2013 who can shed some light on this?

I finished my applications in December and at first, there was a rush of relief. My last application deadline was 1/15 but since I've been done for a month, I effectively extended my waiting time for a month. Really anxious to get the first notification email. Could be as early as 2/1 if the Results Search from last year is any indication. Now I'm down to counting the days. I am finding some distraction in this Tumblr: whatshouldwecallgradschool.tumblr.com What else are you doing to pass the time?

look out
-
I officially submitted to all 11 of my schools in December. I felt confident about my materials and I wanted to have them all in rather than waiting for my schools with January deadlines and dragging it out I failed to consider that I've now been done for a full month and have extended this tortuous waiting period. But some of my programs started to notify on February 1st. Counting down the days.
-
I finished about the same time. Decided I didn't want to agonize for the January deadlines and that I was comfortable with my materials. So I've been done for exactly a month.... And I anticipate hearing back from my first schools within a month. I just want to hear SOMETHING back at this point. Ha ha. Good luck!

If I don't get accepted anywhere, I think I'll...
SocInTheCity replied to Domino's topic in Waiting it Out
I will probably move into my sister's basement for a few months to lick my wounds, re-take the GRE to attempt for a higher school, take some additional coursework in the discipline to which I am applying, and come back in the 2014 application cycle on a mission! -
I did the same thing for Sociology. 15 days until the first notifications came out in 2013!

worse Analytical Writing score second time 'round...
SocInTheCity replied to repentwalpurgis's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Some schools ask for your best score in each area....don't stress! -
A 6th time? No. Your record is strong. If you've already taken it 5 times, these are probably accurate scores. Profs have told me that you can address a score you deem to be "weak" in your personal statement/statement of purpose in one simple sentence. The GRE is just ONE measure. Don't stress!

Will ETS notify us via email when AWA score is available?
SocInTheCity replied to C_Chattra's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I took it in September and my score was posted in 7 days (got an email). Now, I'm on test 2 and it's been 8 days. HURRY UP ETS! You got my hopes up. Ha ha. -
After reading these comments, speaking with some faculty members, and reflecting on my goals, I do think that the Sociology program will allow me to explore my sociological interests outside of education and ultimately make me more marketable upon graduation. Thanks for the advice and input from all.

Just took the GRE: The "should I even bother" thread.
SocInTheCity replied to SocGirl2013's topic in Sociology Forum
I definitely wouldn't say you "bombed." Look at the results section for Sociology. Some students are rejected with scores of 165/165 while others get in with 153/157. Fit is key. Of course, there are going to be cut offs that departments don't post on the web, but in all honesty...they really are looking for a package. Good luck! -
I have been compiling my application materials for some time, but recently learned that the Stanford program considers the School of Education to be a department rather than a separate school. This is different than NYU, for example, where Soc of Ed is in Steinhardt and and Sociology is in the College of Arts and Sciences. Now, I must decide between the two programs rather than applying for both. I am specifically interested in both occupational and educational aspirations, so my instinct is to apply for the straight Sociology department, but I am torn. Is anyone deciding between these two programs? Or can any current students speak to the differences/strengths between these two departments? Many thanks!

Hopping in on the fun. I've been looking at the boards for 2 years now...and I'm finally applying this fall!
