  1. Can confirm, this is 100% a result of procrastinating actual work!
  2. Not sure if it will help or hurt to know, but I'm one of the short-listed postings. My POI is Pam Beddor, so hopefully that can give you some hope! I'm not sure how many they're planning on contacting or when different professors are contacting though.
  3. Just finished my last application! Now to enjoy the sweet few weeks where I'm not checking my email every 37 seconds.
  4. You're right, it should be on my list as well! The people that I know that are affiliated with that department are sharp and I'd especially love to work with Pam Beddor or Andries Coetzee.
  5. Thanks for starting up the thread Nicholassss! I'm a phonetician so I'm not too familiar with theoretical programs you'd be applying too, but I'll be applying to programs as well for next fall. I'm mainly interested in large-scale corpus phonetics and answering questions about variation and change, social meaning and the like. I'm looking right now at Berkeley, Penn, McGill, OSU, and maybe Stanford, but I'd love to hear what programs other people are applying to as well! Cheers!
  6. Chiming in to agree with Fuzzy, I feel that most professors would be more than happy to talk with you more about your questions about the program or the research. It may also be helpful to ask them to put you in touch with current grad students so you can get direct information about the atmosphere of the program and area.
  7. I'm not sure about Syracuse, but another thing to consider is cost of living. Raleigh is quite cheap compared to other university towns you'd find in other states and cost of living is really quite good. If you have questions about the program at NCSU, just pm me!
  8. Congratulations rainbowpink, just got my notice too!
  9. Thanks Coffeemachine for the information! It's good to know a general time frame when I can stop checking my email compulsively!
  10. Does anyone from previous years know when they tend to start sending notifications about fellowships? I can't find any info about the usual dates on their website.
  11. @Gnome, thanks for the suggestions! There's a good deal of flexibility in the MA program I'm starting in the fall, so I'm just testing the waters now and if I really enjoy it I might try and break into the field. I've got working knowledge of UNIX and Python now, but I'll definitely be spending the next few months improving!
  12. Hi All, So I'm a sociophonetics student starting to branch out and dabble in other subfields a bit. I was wondering what suggestions of solid intro/overview texts in comp. ling/NLP you might be able to suggest as additions to my summer reading list? Right now I'm working through a tutorial using python and the ntlk corpus/module/package for text processing things. And next on the list is Speech and Language processing (Jurafsky, 2009). What others texts/resources should I make sure not to miss as I'm getting the basics? Cheers and Thanks!
  13. Idina Menzel was in Frozen with Kristen Bell Kristen Bell was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall with Jason Segel Jason Segel was in Despicable Me 2 with Will Arnett Will Arnett was in Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell Will Ferrell was in The Producers with Matthew Broderick Matthew Broderick was in Bee Movie with Jerry Seinfield Uma Thurman and Gael GarcĂa Bernal
  14. I'm almost finished with my application for Beginner Korean for this upcoming summer. Working on my PhD applications for the Fall at the same time though, so I've got lots of stressful waiting to do over the next few months
  15. I'm in a similar boat, trying to establish some connections with professors I haven't yet met in person. What I've seen suggested and have done so far is to initially email the POI and briefly introduce myself, where I study, what field/degree I'm applying for, when I'm applying, and expressing my interest in his/her program. Then, I write a super brief section summarizing my research interests. After that, I say something to the effect of "I was really interested in your work on X, Y, Z because of A, B, C. I'm just writing to make sure that you intend to take on students in 20XX, because I am very interested in working with you." I read a few posts of people who tried sending out a form letter with nothing specific to the professor and who received cold, if any, replies. However, I've really had great feedback from the professors I think due in part to the fact that I proved I read some of their work and not just their website description. Also, it might be worthwhile to ask if they might pass on the names of some current graduate students to contact with specific questions about the department/advisor/city/etc. Mandarin.Orange's post and especially the page they link to (http://science-professor.blogspot.com/2007/12/writing-to-me.html) was really helpful for me!
  16. I'm definitely a fan of R because, like others have mentioned, (1) It's rather intuitive once you get the basics (2) Lots of helpful forums and the "? query" help function (3) Really strong plotting (I'd suggest the package ggplot2 for your graphing needs) (4) It's free!!
  17. Wow, thanks for all of the input! It seems like the overwhelming consensus is to go for it, which means that I know what my weekend project will be! @GermanStudent- Thank you for the suggestion! I really love the layout and will definitely consider using it!
  18. Hi all, I searched the forums high and low for any similar threads but were not able to find any that had been replied to, so I decided to create a new one! I will be applying for PhD programs this Fall and I've been wondering if I should create a personal website in preparation. I understand that some (many?) programs will google prospective students and I would love it if they found a presentable website with my cv, personal info, research interests, etc.. My current university allots website space to students and faculty and I have some background with html and the like, so I'm confident I could put together something that didn't look awful. However, should I even be considering this? And if I decide to create one, should I include a link in my CV when I send in my application? Cheers!
  19. Ligocap- Thanks for the suggestion! I was looking at the work done by Kira Hall and Rebecca Scarborough and it's definitely interesting! In fact, I'm 90% sure I've read something written by Hall before, but I can't seem to find what it was. ladyling- Thank you for the advice! I definitely agree, I've read a lot of Munson's stuff and I'm really interested in what he does, but I'm not really sure if the linguistics department would be the best fit for me, as I'm leaning towards experimental phonetics/sociophonetics. Would you happen to have any suggestions of other strong sociophonetic programs? I've heard good things about Rice and UCSB.
  20. Hi all! I'm an undergraduate studying Spanish with a minor in Linguistics (my school does not have a Linguistics BA) and I'll be applying this fall for PhD programs starting in Fall 2014. I'm in the process of finding the schools that best fit my research interests and honestly it seems like the hardest part of the whole process so far! I'm definitely looking for a strong sociolinguistic program, because the research that I have done and would like to continue working on deals with the intersection of language and sexuality, looking mainly at sociophonetics and perceptions of speaker identity. As part of an undergraduate research project I did some work with the effect of pitch and voice onset time of voiceless stops on the perceptions of male sexuality which I presented at an undergraduate poster symposium. I submitted the research to NWAV on the off chance that I might get accepted to present (I would die of excitement/nerves/giddiness). So far the programs I'm looking at are Stanford, NYU, and Ohio State. I really like the work that is coming from the faculty there and would love to work with any of them. I am, however, looking to expand my list to probably about 5 or so schools. Does anyone have any suggestions for strong US PhD programs in the area of Language and Gender/Sexuality? Much Appreciated!
