Johns Hopkins SAIS 2014 Superthread

Thanks for the support all, I really appreciate it. From what I've seen, it looks like DC and Bologna acceptances will go out around the same time. A few rejections have popped up (saw a few people say so in threads, not on the result page). I think one person posted that they were accepted to the Nanjing campus last week but my mind might be playing tricks on me. -
Another day of being 'under consideration' across the board. I was poking through my SAIS issue essay and found two minor typos. Made me wince. Now I feel like it's one of those situations like a job offer, where one type means your application goes in the garbage. x_x Might just be my nerves. Congrats for those who heard back today. What program did you apply to specifically?

I've been trying not to think about it either - found two typos in my issue essay long after the fact. I am long beyond panicking, but it definitely doesn't feel good to know that somehow that wound up being submitted. -
It's not so much discrimination, so much as the fellowships available to me/the American programs I'm applying to as a Candian applying for an MA program often require American citizenship. Were I applying to a PhD program, I would have a much wider range of opportunities. Right now I'm relying directlying on scholarships and financial assistance - and those packages are determined by GRE and GPA scores, as well as POIs I believe? It's a veiled process to me. I applied for as much as I could at the end of the day. :S

Some yes, but not all. I know for a fact the main meeting is on the 11th so don't lose hope! :] Unfortunately with provincial budget cuts, I don't think the department can extend as many positions as normal but I know they're trying to. -
Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school

I have had friends and family say the exact same thing. My Dad did too. It's like they expect me to be a freeloader, and don't realize that financial assistance from my parents is really a loan. Then my extended family goes on the "you're making your parents broke" discussion, paired with the "Everyone has a degree now. It won't get you a job at the end of the day..." talk. x_x -

As a current McGill student, I can tell you that we're just finishing up our break. Both MA and PhD candidates haven't been notified yet within the department (at least this was the sense I got when I was talking admissions with my advisor who's involved in the process). They're late this year because of budget meetings and really bad weather. You should all start hearing back this week. :] -
I agree! I know I have less of a chance of getting funding from American universities as an international MA student. At least this was what I came across when I was reading up on their financial aid packages. PhD programs tend to get more funding opportunities. fellowships etc. Who knows. My fingers are crossed something works out, otherwise I'm not looking forward to the monster student loans I might have to take out. x_X

I've had the same conversation with my Dad close to six times in the past year. Dad: So you're graduating Me: Yes... Dad: What's next? Me: Grad school? Dad: Why? Why do you need that? You went to school for four years already. How is that not enough? How did not you not make enough connections in four years to get a job? Me: I have connections. The government jobs I want won't take me if I don't have an MA Dad: How could you not see this when you started your BA? Me: I did...one thing follows the other... Dad: But why do you need it? I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall some days. This thread is awesome though. I completely relate to some people having more confidence in my applications than I do. The most realistic response I got about my apps was from my undergraduate thesis advisor, who said "It was a long shot...but you have good chances." All I could think of was an airball in a crucial basketball game when I read that. xD -
I currently live in an urban setting in Canada. Cost of living varies depending on the lifestyle you want to leave. Rent ranges anywhere from $400 a month to $4500 for a one bedroom apartment, ranging from dank basements to top luxury condos. Food costs are silly, especially when I compare what I pay for two week's worth of groceries at home in the suburbs vs. the city. I'm used to swallowing those high costs. I feel like efforts can be made to keep the cost of living down (though I can't expect to keep costs the same in Geneva, I know it's more, and the DC Georgetown area is really no better). But the raw difference in tuition for me as an international student makes a big impact: Georgetown SFS tuition is $44,408 a year, Geneva (exchanged to USD) is roughly $5698.66. Plus I feel of the two, Geneva is more likely to give out a more generous scholarship package. But who knows. I might just be naive.

Congrats! Did you get the email late tonight? Or earlier this afternoon? The summary title would be that I am currently focusing on state behavior within the WTO. I looked for WTO oriented IPE scholars who had existing research that ran along similar lines, along with schools that had courses that would let me look more into the history of financial crises (which is my other passion). I went looking for particular scholars accessible at the MA level in top schools, which really limited my options. I know I'm aiming high, just hope it pays off. ><

I have a very particular research interest so I applied with specific faculty to work with in mind. I couldn't find specialists whose reseach aligned with mine at the MA level in my field at other schools. It very well could come back to bite me, or particuliarity will be a selling feature. I couldn't tell you.

I am so tired of random programs emailing me...one even called me from Missouri. And all because of one box I checked when I took my GRE stating that I was interested in information on additional programs related to my field of interest. Didn't anticipate so many awful emails...

Gah. It's so great to see so many people hearing back from MDev applications. I applied to the MA in International Law program. No word yet. x_x Congrats to everyone who has heard back! I might have missed this, but have people heard back about scholarship/funding with their acceptance? Or have they been told that will be forwarded with an official letter (as many other schools do it this way)...
