  1. It depends who you get on the adcom. In my field position titles imply a certain jobset but it can very often not cover what you actually did to contribute. It's kind of like everyone is one rank below where they should be. Everyone knows it, but you still have to spell it out - plus you get brownie points if you list a task or skill they particularly want. I worry the "no fluff" people are shooting themselves in the foot. I did that, I found out it was doing me no favors - due to assumptions - and reworked have had more success.
  2. I have a friend who "dates" a professor from our undergrad. He pays for her dance studio space where she is a choreographer and instructor. He essentially gave her the cash for her business. I wouldn't mention it normally, people do meet in college, but this relationship is pretty blatantly lopsided and a special agreement. I don't think they'd even disagree. He has royalties and tenure and can do whatever he wants whenever he wants and she gets to be a dancer professionally.
  3. Three, again moreso the "extended resume" format hybrid. I've been burned in the past with position titles making people think I didn't have the level of responsibility (and creative input) I actually had so I spelled it out very clearly in bullet points.
  4. And there is much irony in all the people who shouted you down, said you were doing everything wrong, and many of them probably wont get accepted to many, if any, schools.. Always interesting how that works out.
  5. That's brutal. I'm really sorry. *hugz* Back in the day when I was going for theatrical design (and got into a few places with funding after this story, mind you) I had an interview at a portfolio showing with a few different schools. Thing called URTA. I had been given the wrong return time, and was "late" (through no fault of my own) for some of my scheduled interviews with schools who expressed interest based on my portfolio. Well, the URTA people went to bat for me, fessed up they screwed up, and got some of the schools I missed to make time for me. One guy came back and said.. "You present yourself well, but.. having time to reflect and look more closely.. since you weren't here and I was all alone and so bored.. I've decided you're not nearly as good as I thought you were and I'm not interested anymore. Oh, and there's a typo in your SOP. See? Here. If I didn't have the time to sit here and wait for you, I'd have never noticed and you'd have been my top pick. The industry is tough kid, be on time." Then he got up and left. So.. there's lot of art world a-holes Don't feel too bad, you just ran into one.
  6. God, what will become of you without a chat room..? Oh wait, I don't care.
  7. You assume I bother to read that far or care that deeply about mentally identifying you as an individual.. You're really just a pastiche blur of "bleh" in my mind. Sort of a brown stain which occasionally reoccurs in slightly different forms of "bleh" and "blah" - I was going to say "revolting" but that's way too intense of a feeling to describe my general reaction to you.
  8. Well.. "people" and "everyone" is beyond "person" if you want to get serious with the silly maxims.. in the name of social science.
  9. More of a cookie monster, but thanks for saying something interesting.
  10. I can't decipher what you've ever contributed other than a bad pun for a username. What exactly gives you the gall to interact with people the way that you do..?
  11. Seriously, there's a Marina song for all occasions!
  12. Define romantic..? My version involves "the feels."
  13. I still say that's not a date unless you intend to make a romantic connection. I essentially think the term "casual dating" is a front for not admitting you want to remain sexually open for the time being, because being openly so has icky moral and judgement baggage that people don't like to deal with.
  14. And are women such different company than men..? So much for empowerment..
  15. We call those.. err.. "bang buddies" (well, you know what the right term is, we had a whole thread.) It's not a date.
  16. Yeah.. no.. not at all what I was saying.. heck, that comment wasn't directed at you.
  17. And for the record, who said hobag was derrogatory? You just have to be upfront about it. I mean, I understand you gotta be lookin pure, but don't front with me
  18. I know, i know, it all gets fuzzy when your sexual partners are also supposed to be your "best friends" by gender norms. Did I inadvertently go on a casual date when that girl from work and I went to see a movie? I'm pretty sure I didn't.
  19. So what exactly is your intention with a "casual date" if you have no intention of a relationship? How is it at all different from a hookup? And how is it dating if there's nothing sexual or sexual pretense about it? How is it a date and not hanging out with random people? If you want to meet new people, meet new people. I'm a homo. If I hang out with you, is it a date? I'm pretty sure you're straight. Is it just the mixed genders that defines a date in your book? But if there's sexual pretense and intention.. but not intended relationship.. it's a hookup, how is it not? If you dont succeed or it doesnt workout, it's just a failed hookup but a hookup none the less.
  20. And just a quick note.. you don't write the way most of them do. That is notable.
  21. I think.. no, I'm sure you should probably be holding a mirror to this thread and the people posting in it before going after me. As I stated in the other thread, I'm by no means a perfect applicant. However, plenty of people here seem to know an awful lot about EVERYTHING with no experience and worse, no investigation into the matter. There is a problem they've never tried to solve. How is that possibly the more intelligent discourse than an attempt at solving the problem? Saying it's too confusing, no one will ever understand it, and no one should ever bother..? Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you did somehow standout and were "more worthy" than the horde - what do you think made you stand out? Or do you think it's impossible to discern?
  22. Also, to remain respectable aren't you supposed to be denying people information about how to get into a program? Why are you here? Are you sabotaging people as part of your dissertation and earning you philosophy academia street cred?
  23. I dont wish for your dullness, I wish for you to recover from it.
