  1. I'm always just amazed that people think they can say whatever they want to me, at me, etc.. and there will be no likewise retort. I think you likely have enough sense to realize that I'm not that sort of person.. and you probably don't run around passive aggressively insulting people and getting away with it because society dictates that the "good" people are to grin and bear such BS. Good thing I'm not a good person.
  2. Wrong and wrong, but hey.. 8 posts and you're a "thriving" member of the community, we should all yield to your casual opinion.
  3. Because group think has done -so- much for society..?
  4. It usually means they have too many people to logistically process all at once.
  5. Don't talk to anyone at the school or loan people or anything without talking to a lawyer first. Start at http://www.nolo.com/ See if you can find free advice, but you probably need to schedule a consult with a lawyer (which is usually free) and see from there.
  6. Oh, that's the measure? In that case, I need 3 pieces of yours in order to ascertain if you have any standing to question me.
  7. If I cared enough to know your name, I would. Walked right into that setup didn't ya? People remain amusingly predictable. Also, I'm not saying what's the right or wrong way to change dpi - both ways change the dpi. But the default changes the canvas size. That's where people were having issues. And I explain how at 72 PPI they're aiming for 1000 pixels or just under 14 inches in any one direction to meet 99% of portfolio requirements.
  8. Photoshop uses DPI and PPI interchangeably. If you use photoshop's image settings to change the DPI to 72 from 300 it will shrink your image canvas size. And Jaques I'm sooooo sorry you might need to read a caption to understand an image when judging media that is not 2d. Your life must be so hard. I'm so sorry people expect you to do all functions of your job with diligence rather than skimping over the parts you don't like or find unpleasant. I mean, it's not like someone's future is at stake if you gloss over things and make incorrect assumptions. Funnily enough I suspect glossing over things, coming to erroneous conclusions, and yet still being treated like you deserve a cookie for the "good" you've done is not at all a foreign concept to you.
  9. I've done the CD and physical portfolio showings. With those, you control the context. With slideroom they are judging just by the photo - which for many mediums royally screws people over.
  10. Give it time.. It's a slow burn. Then it becomes intolerable.
  11. Omg I'd kill to work at whole foods instead of my crappy job right now.
  12. I was going to provide a nice clear answer but then i managed to confuse myself between dpi, ppi, etc.. Regardless, you want your "resolution" to be 72 or higher. That's the 240 and 300 you're seeing. So being higher is fine. It just makes it a big clunky file. But then there's the actual image size and how "big" it will look on people's screens. You want 1000 pixels in any given direction for the image size - assuming you're At 72 pixels/inch, bumping an image to 1000 pixels wide puts it at about 14 inches when displayed (13.889). However, at 300 pixels/inch, it "shrinks" down to 3.33 inches. So when someone goes to look at it, it's data dense but itty bitty. They can bother to zoom in, and it will remain clear as the data is all there and will just expand-outward, but you really want it around the 14 inches of the 72 pixel/inch default. So they dont/can't/wont need to zoom in to see it large and clearly. So just be mindful of your canvas/image size when you're changing resolution.
  13. Also - don't try to do everything all at once. You can't just dive in and train like a lifelong athlete. Set a few small goals for time and number of days per week.. then add a day.. add a day.. etc.. until it becomes a normal habit.
  14. You'll be amazed at how much time you spend just sitting around goofing off if you begin to measure it. Or you can just set time limits.. like 30mins or an hour for internet, TV, etc.. When I get home from work, I tell myself I'm going to workout by the next whatever-o'clock. Usually it's like X:58 before I find my lifting gloves and have changed shoes. You do need to have compact and well structured workouts. Leisurely workouts don't do crap anyways, but there's some good workouts that want an over-dedication of time. P90X works great for general fitness, but dear god, it wants a lot of your time. I also try to set a firm bedtime depending on when I need to be awake in the morning. With that in mind, if I wake up naturally an hour or so before I need to be up.. well.. there's time for a cardio workout before work. I feel great if I schedule cardio in the morning - later in the day, at that moment it's pure hell. So I tend not to do them very often. I had this one program once that tried to get me to do like very short but ridiculously intense cardio first thing in the mornings. Something 20-40mins if you can swing it is much more reasonable and allows for a decent warm up and cool down. Say an hour for a shower and such... on top of whatever time you normally get up to get to work/class. I would not try to do weight training in the morning, but that's me.
  15. I havent even looked - my site went on lockdown when i started the application process. My twitter went private and my facebook became squeaky clean (and blocked to all but direct friends).
  16. I went to an event for the school that covered all prospective students, grad and undergrad. I walked up, and the man I later learned was the head if admissions says "You're interested the graduate program right?" I guess I am younger than the undergrads parents but older than the undergrads, but I kinda wanted to hit him. Just a little.
  17. For me, the mere mention of a face to face meeting to talk about it got the problem solved. I was and am still known as being a sort of force not to be meddled with.
  18. I was describing the media for one piece.. "Let's see.. Acrylic, water color, gemstone powder in flow medium, gauche, steel, copper, balsa, nylon, polyest... Polyest.. What? What do you mean there's a character limit?!?!? *deletedeletedelete* STUFF. No, that sounds way unprofessional. Mixed Media. Done."
  19. I also love how slideroom requires an answer to size, format, etc even if it's not relevant. Further, faculty doesn't see that answer unless they toggle it on - so it is truly 95% pointless.
  20. Mine looks like an elaborate toga party near a strange swimming pool. For fun we should all say what our portfolio looks like with zero context based just on the images.
  21. Tonight I'm convinced I'm not getting an acceptance. And I'm mad about it. Then I'm sure I will get an admit with no funding which I'm even angrier about. Then I'm sure I'll get an admit with "meh" funding and not be able to pull things together financially to attend and forfeit by default. This makes me want to throat punch kittens. No table unflipped type Hulk rage. Today I was told after surgery that if I don't lower my stress levels it's going to eventually kill me, as it's already detrimental to my health. Le sigh.
  22. Well, it was mentioned in my conversation with admissions that they were concerned about the amount of time my app was taking to get through committee. To the point where they went and started asking the various members what the hold up was. And that's when I got the notice to submit some additional work for my portfolio because I didn't show a specific skill in my original submission. As "one person" on the committee was curious about it. Ok, ok, it was "Mr. Loric needs to show more of.." and then admissions calls me and asks if I can show more of that. But I digress. The timeline: I was told 3-4 weeks for the whole committee process, plus added time thanks to the Christmas/New Years holidays. That's at a rolling admission school - so there's no "deadline" and my app isn't being considered within a group so to speak. The Adcomm is members of the faculty/staff pertinent to the program and they give their ratings and feedback (I have no idea if they ever actually "meet" to discuss me.) I finished my app and all file submissions at the end of November. In late december I was told the winter holidays would slow things down and I'd be reviewed shortly after everyone got back. Week before this was the trauma with admissions questioning what the review committee was doing and why they hadn't heard anything. I was told that the head of admissions knew about my file because it was taking so long and was keeping an eye on it. So.. yeah.. it's complicated. The people who work in admissions are generally trying to push things forward efficiently and quickly. When it's out for review, who knows. It's professors. It's like herding cats. I don't know if you've seen the Tina Fey film Admission - i don't blame you for not seeing it, it's not very good - but the big admissions process take away is that it's a majority vote of the committee members. Someone can decide to advocate for you, but the majority rules. I'm assuming once the admissions office gets all the votes back (or a majority in either direction, regardless of all the votes being collected) then they'll do their best to let you know.
  23. Note today saying that adcom is looking over my file. I will have a decision soonish.

Are you applying for English by any chance. You responded to one of my questions ( about how long after meeting the committee responds to you). Have you heard from your committee yet? I know mine met yesterday as well, but I haven't heard anything and I'm starting to feel sick.
