  1. @dmirko gotta keep fighting for a $15/hr minimum wage!!!! Honestly, I'm really hoping that automation is going to eventually cause a really big cultural shift away from the whole "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality in the US. I can really get behind a universal basic income if we reach the point at which a lot of economic activity is automated. But we're a long ways from that future.
  2. Absolutely this. For me, the advice of "getting to know the real world" is not about going through financial struggle, but working out the balance between working at a job & working in the studio. My first year out of undergrad I made almost nothing because I worked two flexible-but-poorly-paid positions. And I lived an hour away from my studio, which took me awhile to realize was a major problem. That gave me the experience to both get a better job working less time for more $ and also taught me the importance of having a more accessible studio (even if it's smaller). There's no overarching advice of what sort of working position will be best for you, which is why going through the motions is so important. Although the MFA is a degree that doesn't guarantee to pay itself off, there are certain opportunities that are more difficult to obtain without one. I can understand why someone would want to go straight into grad from undergrad (particuarilly if you're a non-traditional, older student), and there are definitely people from whom it works out. But eventually we all have to figure out that job-art balance, and spending the time between undergrad & grad school to find your stride on that front makes a lot of sense. As far as barista & other service industry jobs go—I know a lot of artists who take on these positions because of the flexibility that they offer. It's not because it's the only sort of job they can find. Also in general—we all get coffee & eat out, I don't think it's great to dismiss service industry jobs. It's hard work, but it also makes a lot of sense for many artists to work in service. Not everyone can work at a non-profit, or be an artist assistant / do art handling.
  3. I am super broke after traveling for interviews & application season, so not able to afford flying out on such short notice. & I'm very sure I'm going to accept my offer. Figure I'll meet all the current 1st years in a few months anyway!
  4. Same here! My partners is very happy that we aren't moving to LA lol. He was dreading the driving. @Gwhar1 I agree—their letter was quite nice. It felt a lot more warm than UCI's rejection haha
  5. Mine is the same. When interview decisions came out in Feb, I picked a spot so early that the system didn't capture my response properly. So it might be that we need to wait a few days for the form to appear properly. I'm going to wait for Monday to fill it out. Also—congratulations!!!! Thank you!!
  6. Thank you!!! :/ It's an accomplishment to get on the waitlist though! Hoping that a spot opens up for you!
  7. Congratulations!!!!! Might see you in New Haven then?
  8. @Cengstro @Impartial @Gwhar1 @Kamari @KatieB1987 thank you all!!!!!! I had taken an early shower & got in my pajamas for an early night in, thinking I wouldn't find out until tomorrow. ? Guess it's going to be happy mimosas tomorrow!
  9. Wow! That's really exciting, it's a rare occurrence to see such a big investment into MFA programs. I didn't think the studios looked that bad, though I was mostly paying attention to the size. Leaks & poor ventilation sounds pretty terrible.
  10. Oh sorry I was talking about Rutgers!!! I haven't heard a peep from UCLA. I have seen the studios in Culver City before, but didn't have any idea they were moving people. Are they trying to pull everyone to the main UCLA campus?
  11. Lounyc a few pages back posted that they got a call from Rutgers on Sunday with an acceptance offer. One of the students told me on interview day that they will accept people through as late as May with the turnover of those who don't end up matriculating. The faculty supposedly decided that day who the first 14 accepted students would be. I'm not sure if they'll send out rejections at all until the class is finalized. Stressful!! Right now I'm kind of assuming I didn't make the first cut, but holding onto a little bit of hope.
  12. Thank you!! ?
  13. It felt really positive for mine as well! I had a few moments of self depricating humor which got some laughter from them. I'm going to PM you in more detail tonight. Now that the wave of relief has passed, I'm back to being anxious as well. Keep reminding myself that it's an accomplishment to even get this far and I can always apply next year if it doesn't work out.
  14. Got the official rejection letter from UC Irvine. Hoping that means that those of you who interviewed will get acceptances soon!
  15. Hey!! Also sculpture for Yale here. Yale sends all its acceptances through the same portal thing that we got interview requests & also all departments send at the same time. I think we should hear back very early AM on Saturday. A friend who is the painting department now said that they sent the application update at 2 or 3 in the morning. Hoping we both get in!!! I've been more & more excited about Yale after the interview. It was crazy how directed the interview was towards individual practices instead of general questions.
  16. Yes!!! A better idea than drinking the night before!
  17. Congratulations on Rutgers!!!! Did you get a call from a photo professor? Wondering if I should hold onto hope of not being on the waitlist if they're calling people slowly throughout the week. Seriously haha, I'm debating whether I should drink all night so I can either celebrate drunk or be sad & drunk. Probably will actually just wake up early.
  18. Yeah, I don't think there's a particular time. Apparently Yale released final decisions after the interview on Saturday at 2~3am ET last year.
