From what I've heard, the social functions in the evening, whether it's dinner or drinks with a professor, or hitting the bars with some current grad students is literally another interview. As in, that is when they see if you're socially well-adjusted, friendly, someone they'd like to spend years working with, and not obviously insane. Attendance is basically mandatory.

Sharing a hotel room with significant other

Seriously? Yeah, it'd be slightly annoying, but I think I'd much rather get into graduate school if I get an interview than throw a tantrum over something so petty and kill any chance of being admitted to the program. -
How much did applying to grad programs cost you?
Socrates1 replied to Maziana's topic in Waiting it Out
Well over a thousand dollars. I haven't added it up because I know I'll just feel nauseated by the damage to my savings. -
Wait, so USC hasn't even done interviews, you're saying? I've been assuming this already happened and I'm getting rejected. I certain;y haven't heard anything. I haven't heard anything from UCLA. I'm also assuming I'm about to receive a barrage of rejection letters.

^^This, so much this.

If anyone is still waiting for Yale, I'm afraid they're done. I expected it at this point, but they posted a generic, all graduate programs rejection letter to my profile yesterday, so it looks like they've filled all openings in the graduate school for next Fall.

I'm lucky there's nobody else in my lab right now because I just burst out laughing.

If I don't get accepted anywhere, I think I'll...

Spiral into total depression for a few weeks, hopefully get a better job. Start studying to retake the GRE all over again... -
Bleh. Given that you posted this 4 days ago with information from the previous week, I guess I should start bracing myself for that rejection notification.
-
Anyone know whether lots of invites go out in February as well? I've only heard back from one school so far, a rejection. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm having a hard time with this.

Behavioral Neuroscience 2014 and future applicants!

Applied to 8, been rejected by one so far. It's kind of depressing, honestly. -
Feeling like getting rejection from all schools I applied

Thanks, I do hope so. Unfortunately my GPA isn't that hot either, but hopefully anyone who bothers glancing at my transcript will see that was just be being a stupid 18-year old my freshman year. Good that you heard back from one so far, sadly the only news I've gotten is a notification that I didn't make the interviews at OHSU. -
I got rejected by the Behavioral Neuroscience program at Oregon Health & Science on the 20th. Standard "thanks for your interest, but you didn't make our interview cut" type of email. That's all I've heard so far, depressingly.

Study a lot, taking some test prep class, online or in person would be a really good idea. Get some strategies for dealing with stress and anxiety. Take practice tests.
-
the test is seriously evil, no denying that.

Not invited for an interview - decreased chance?
Socrates1 replied to doefficient's topic in Interviews and Visits
Some schools do multiple waves of invites, or multiple interview days just for logistical reasons. It's not a good sign but it's too early to decide you're out yet. -

It's okay, I'm at the point where I'll be pretty surprised if I get an interview. I don't see myself being admitted at all. -
Acceptance into competitive, "top-tier" programs without a publication
Socrates1 replied to anatotitan's topic in Biology
Just curious, do manuscripts help? I'm second author on one me and some other RA's are doing, but it's been kinda on the back-burner cause we're all post-bacs who have other jobs, and the first author and I are both applying to grad school. -
I'm with you. ETS is seriously from the 7th circle of Hell.
-
Wouldn't erring on the side of caution mean going with "Professor" or "Dr." until the adviser said otherwise? I mean, it seems like a lot worse to just assume someone who doesn't have a PhD has one than it is to assume someone who does have a PhD doesn't.

Grad programs ignoring phone calls AND emails??
Socrates1 replied to reinhard's topic in Waiting it Out
Well, that's awkward. -
Realizing you managed to apply to a completely different school than the one you thought you were. Two days before deadline, and you finally notice that logo isn't right. You already have transcripts in, the LORs are uploaded. At that point you just curse, completely throw out the section on POI's in your personal statement, rewrite it with POIs for the school your application is actually for, change the school names, order GRE score reports to the school, and submit it. Because hey, at that point you might as well, right?
-
I'm applying. I have 3 in so far, finishing up 4 more for deadlines on the 15th, and have one that's weirdly not due until mid-January. And I like the lack of competition I have here. Only school I'm applying to that I've seen come up in this thread is John Hopkins.

Just logged into my CU Boulder account for the first time to check my application, saw And freaked out for all of a few seconds until I realized that this it was just a standard blurb. When I clicked the actual status check button I just got "your application is complete and being reviewed by the admissions committee".

Just submitted to OHSU here. My next deadlines are December 15th. I feel so weirdly liberated now. Total illusion, I know, but it's nice not having a deadline looming hideously overhead while I work on stuff.
