  1. Not normally. References are generally "open letters," and can be addressed to just about anyone. Your letter writers are supposed to talk about how you're awesome as a person/academic/professional/etc., not how you're fit for a certain program. That second part is for you to do in your statements of purpose.
  2. Nope. I didn't see anything regarding that. Where does it say that on your OPUS page? The damn thing is difficult to navigate...
  3. Disregard my last post. I think my brain just combined two emails. I should sleep...
  4. I just got an email from Emory's financial aid office congratulating me on my acceptance and telling me to apply for financial aid. I haven't gotten an acceptance notification yet. I'm confused.
  5. So far I've only gotten emails. Some schools may send physical letters and acceptance packages with additional info, including financial stuff, but we live in a digital age. I think most schools notify by email nowadays.
  6. I plan on taking out loans and working (TA/research/whatever will take me). $20K a year is actually reasonable. Most schools I've applied to are $20K a semester.....
  7. 1.) Location. It doesn't matter what I study, if I hate where I am, I'm not going to study well 2.) Program/research. Rankings don't matter if they don't spark my interests 3.) Cost. I would eventually like a PhD; I can't spend all of my money on a Masters
  8. Woah. I just looked up tuition for the schools I've applied to. This stuff's expensive..
  9. Congrats! I didn't apply to UMinn.....but I wanna know about the super cute way they tell you!
  10. My stats are not the most impressive....if you're feeling stalkerish, you can look at the Results Survey, and you might be able to find me.....
  11. BU Epi here as well! Applied 10/22. Acceptance package expected in January. I did not expect to get in....
  12. Haha...oooh god no. I submitted EVERRRYTHINGGG at the same time. All 8 schools.....in October...including the schools with obscenely late deadlines. Looking back my application process, I can't believe I was so stupid! I would keep this in mind for next time, but I surely hope there won't have to be a next time....soo if any 2015 applicants are reading this, put out your early/priority deadlines and safety schools first, THEN take your time to focus on your target schools. This method is also a good way to hone in on your target schools so you don't end up overapplying and spending ~$500 in apps..... I have so much regret, but at least it's over now.
  13. Damn. I know we all applied to different schools, but I'm so jealous that a lot of you have heard back from places! I guess, while we're waiting, anyone started looking into financial aid and FAFSA stuff yet?
  14. Just got an email saying that Emory has received my app but haven't started the selection process yet. The wheels are slowly churning...
  15. I applied to 8 schools, 9 programs total. I wanted to play it safe. While I have research and work experience and decent GREs, I had a low GPA. It also doesn't help that forums such as this one and the Student Doctor Network can make you feel overly paranoid about your own academic status. Long story short, I freaked out and over applied. I do regret applying to 2 or 3 schools at this point though.
  16. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. We're passed the end of the working business month. Anyone hear from Emory yet?
  17. There's an upvote button>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>V
  18. Speaking as another person with a low GPA (who's also seeking an MPH, and who totally didn't go through your history after your low GPA post in the public health section), I did not address it in the additional information pages because I have no excuses for my undergraduate grades. I was a slacker, and that was that. My personal statement briefly mentioned my low GPA but it was mostly about how I came to be passionate about my field (I took a year off after graduating and worked in an epidemiology lab). It's still early in the application season but I think it's been working for me. Good luck!
  19. GAAHHH I JUST RESPONDED TO ONE OF YOUR OTHER POSTS. You don't need to retake it a sixth time, dammit!! Now I'm freaking out for you! Okay, deep breath..... If you mean to take it again, just use my study technique: do practice questions until your eyes bleed. It's tried and true when it comes to acing standardized tests....which is a skill that any graduate school worth your time shouldn't judge you on. But if you must take it again....good luck, Cat.
  20. Jesus. How did this thread get to be so negative? The answers to Bullet Cat's question is short and simple. Should you take the GRE a sixth time? No. Honestly, with your academic record, I don't understand why you took it more than twice. You'll be FINE. I wish I could emphasis that more..... You'll be FINE. Save your money for the application fees, travel expenses for interviews, etc. Send the scores you're most comfortable with and apply. I really hope you're ignoring the rest of this thread. It's getting all too negative up in here. Good luck, Bullet Cat
  21. I interpreted that part of the application as a place to address any medical/personal crisis type situation that may have affected your GPA. In general, I personally don't think you should go too in depth as to why you have a bad GPA. It comes off as if you're trying too hard to make excuses for having one. I have a low GPA and also applied to Berkeley. I didn't make excuses for it......except in my case I also got my low GPA at Berkeley. It just didn't feel appropriate. I'm not very hopeful about getting into Cal again.
  22. Don't worry. Once the application is submitted, you'll come to find that there aren't enough days in a business week to refresh your email.
