I'm moving from California to New York next fall. I'm the opposite-ish from you. I've lived in LA my entire life except for a stint at UC Berkeley for my undergraduate. I'll be leaving my friends and family behind. My boyfriend, who currently is based in New York, recently broke up with me. So....I not only have anxiety about leaving my home, I'm also apprehensive about moving to my new home. Sorry, I can't offer much advice, but I can sympathize. Misery loves company, right? Just take it easy and slow. Take things day by day. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I don't know if it's appropriate to talk about it here. I have no one to talk to right now. I'm probably gonna get downvoted to oblivion but hey, I need to let out a few words so whatever, why not? I should be celebrating my acceptances. I should be happy it's the holidays. But not. I'm sad. It's so "high school" to say this but I was recently broken up with...but hey! It's Christmas time! I have to keep it to myself and put on a happy face for everyone to see . Now I feel like I'm facing the future alone. I have to move cross country next fall, alone. I'm really fucking terrified of starting graduate school now. I'm looking at moving nearly 3000 miles away from home by myself. Why so far away?, you may wonder. Because I wanted change. I wanted to get as far away from my home state as possible. When I was applying, I was confident and had a good support system backing me up. But now I feel like the support system is crumbing, and my god, I'm really scared. How's it like moving to a new place on your own, when you're alone? Hopefully someone out here can relate and help me out. If not, thanks for listening and have a happy new year.

Not me personally, but I have a friend who went from SF/Bay Area to Minnesota. Not much to say aside from many bottles of Sriracha and Pocky sticks were sent via USPS flat-rate boxes.

I moved about 600 miles away from home for my undergraduate and did it all wrong. I was so lonely that all I could bear to do was hole myself up in my dorm room. Now for graduate school, I'll be moving about 3000 miles away from home and I'm pretty determined not to repeat the pattern. I really have to throw myself out there and make friends, and frankly and pathetically, I'm kinda scared to do so.

Damn. As someone who's moving across the country alone next fall...I was really hoping to gain something from this thread.

When did you apply and when are you hearing back?

Congrats! Perfect news before all the offices close for the holiday, I bet. -
Got this from UC Berkeley, not sure what it means..
123hardasABC replied to x13LadeZx's topic in Waiting it Out
You got an okay from the department/College of Engineering but they're still waiting for the University to respond. The individual departments/colleges usually have different admission requirements than the University does. I went there; Cal works in mysterious ways. I do recommend visiting the campus though. It's an amazing place and there's lots to eat. -

I just got another email from Emory saying that my stuff has been forwarded to my departments of choice. My application is finally, finally complete (I hope). I guess the previous two emails didn't count? -

Congrats!! I'm so jealous. Still anxiously waiting to hear back from my top choices. This must be the perfect way to start your holidays! -

I bet whoever is in charge of the mailing lists must have had too much to drink at the office party and thought it would be funny -

I'M SO GLAD I'M NOT ALONE ON THIS. -

Nope. I think Penn isn't beginning their first rounds of reviews until Dec. 20th. I would hang tight with these two schools since they have later deadlines. They're not likely to start reviewing this early. -
GRE on Thursday and I still suck at Verbal...
123hardasABC replied to bahmed816's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Woah. Calm down, there. You're gonna have to tell us which practice test you took. I scored around the 140s on the Kaplan, Barron, and Princeton Review tests. They purposely bloat the difficulty on their study guides to convince you that you need their prep courses. The only decently accurate practice exam is the one ETS posted using their actual testing software. Even then, nothing can predict how you're gonna do on the real thing. Also, it still doesn't hurt to apply. You never know your chances until you try. And in the worst case scenario where you don't get in anywhere, at least you'll have a better understanding of the application process for the next time around. I can tell you that the application process is overwhelming and confusing. So don't fret, it's not the end of the world! Long story short: calm down, do your best on the GRE, and apply anyways. -
I applied twice and paid twice for Berkeley :X They're my alma mater so I feel like that's okay....right??

Emory took a really freaking long time for me. I think they're barely starting their reviewing period this month, so they're just starting to send confirmations. I applied back in October and didn't hear a word from them until end of November/early this month. And a lot of schools don't send out confirmation emails, or they send them out after their deadline has passed. Hang in there! We're all on this anxiety train together. -

I got one from Emory. I didn't apply to the other two, so I'm useless in regards with those. -
Ugh, I'm from LA so I do this every day for work... ...but if it's for school, I wouldn't do this. I commuted for a year during my undergrad, and I can't recommend it. I felt like I was wasting time traveling back and forth. Even when I took public transit, I found myself too distracted to really study on my commute. I don't think saving a few grand a year is not worth sacrificing your academics.

Wait, what? Why should I keep in mind that you're a white female? Admissions isn't gonna,...or at least they're not supposed to anyways. I mean, yeah, being a white female probably would make you the program's demographic minority, but you shouldn't be considering it as a factor in your application. What's important now is that you demonstrate your mathematical abilities (grades and test scores) and have solid letters of recommendation to vouch for it. Whether or not that race/gender mumbo-jumbo is true, don't think of it as so. That person got into a program because he studied his ass off for the quantitative test, not because he's white -- that's what you should be thinking.

Anyone planning on visiting campuses?
123hardasABC replied to 123hardasABC's topic in Public Health Forum
None of the schools I applied to are "local." The school closest to me is my alma mater, which is a good 7-8 hours' drive away (...California's a really big state...). All the other schools are on the East Coast. Aside from New York, I've never actually visited the states these schools are in. For someone in my situation, I feel like visiting would be a good idea. Luckily, the East Coast is a bit more dense than the West Coast so it's possible to pack all my visits into one trip. I don't know. I already knew my own answer to the question I posed, but as always, I'm just curious what other people think about it. -

I wouldn't worry too much. I applied early so I got in early. Considering that Icahn's final deadline isn't until August, I wouldn't be surprised if I was one of their first applications. It's the peak of the application season right now; I'm sure the rates admission offices work at are just slowing down. Try not to stress. You'll be fine! -
Or you can find it on the Bay of Pirates....if you know what I mean.

123hardasABC replied to katethekitcat's topic in Public Health Forum
I'm not OP but I also got into Icahn School (formerly Mt. Sinai, they apparently changed the school name). I e-submitted 10/22/2013/mailed out 10/30/2013 and got in 11/7/2013, so about a week turnover. They were pretty fast with reviewing my application. I never got an email confirming they received my application. I was notified via email about my acceptance. -
Now that many of us have heard back from a few places, are you planning on visiting your potential schools? I visited my schools when I was applying for my undergraduate, but I know a lot of people who just jumped right in...undergrad, graduate, hell, even professional school. So...are you gonna visit?
-
I'm in the sub-3.0 category, and I certainly didn't do as well on the GRE as you claim to have. Don't let your GPA get you down. You'll be fine, just apply. Worst case scenario, you don't get in the first time and you get a year to build a badass CV. Good luck!

Hm, mine is empty. I'm sure you're okay. Are decisions going to be announced on OPUS? There's no way in hell I'm gonna remember my pre-assigned password to check it as frequently as I like.
