  1. Why I've stopped sharing my bit of good news: "So you're applying for graduate school?" "Yup! For a Masters program though." "Did you hear back from anywhere yet?" "Yeah, the graduate program at Icahn School of Medicine" "So you're gonna go to medical school?!?" Oh my.....
  2. I know Vanoxide HC is both hydrocortisone and benzoyl peroxide so the combination does exist, but if I think it's also a prescription cream. So yeah...why don't we go speak with a dermatologist and not a graduate schools forum, yeah?

    New York, NY

I just got into my safety school (Icahn School, Mt Sinai) and I'm waiting on my top choice, Columbia. There's about an 80% chance I will end up in NY. Where can I live? Preferably in a way so I can still afford food. Edit. My budget is approximately $800-$1200 for myself. I don't know if this is a reasonable estimate for NY, but I'm from SF and this price range is what I'm used to.
  4. That's interesting.... I'm not Canadian either. In the US, public health is really popular and very well-funded so there are plenty of programs. A top 10 program can be competitive but virtually every major university has a public health program so if you're willing to sacrifice a prestigious school name, you'll probably get in somewhere. I realize that there is a financial benefit of staying in Canada but is applying to a US public health school a viable option?
  5. It's the ones that don't do rolling admissions that are killing me. I mean, what do you mean I have to wait until the deadline to be reviewed?!? We have the security of one school, but there's still a whole lot of waiting to do, haha.
  6. I just received an acceptance email from Mt. Sinai! It's nothing impressive compared to the other schools listed in this thread but the feeling that I have something is soooooooo relieving. Especially since I'm applying as a massive underdog with a horrific GPA.... Weeee. Just thought I'd share. I hope everyone is doing well thus far
  7. This is a dumb freaking question, but is the mailing status supposed to say "Mailed" if it's been mailed? My mailing date is 10/30/2013, but the mailing status still says "New."
  8. My guess is that if they don't require it, they probably won't read it...
  9. Yeah. Another thing I forgot to realize is cost of living. The big schools are in major cities and that's gonna be an added cost. I've been so fixated on applying and getting in that I totally overlooked everything else. It's all a bit overwhelming.
  10. Jesus...where do I begin.... 1.) Don't worry about whether you'll get into a PhD program this early in your undergraduate. For now, focus on improving your grades, studying hard, and maybe picking up some internships/research experience. You may have the GRE to worry about later too. 2.) GPA isn't everything. It's only one aspect of your application. Those people with perfect GPAs who got rejected, admissions probably saw something else in their application that they didn't like, i.e. irrelevant work & research experience, bad letter writers, bad impression during interviews, etc. 3.) On top of that, different schools weigh GPA differently. Some schools look mostly at the last 60-90 units, others only major GPA, some science GPA, some look for improvement trends, etc. 4.) Calm down and enjoy your undergraduate years!
  11. I'm just going to be blunt with you. If that's a priority, even a low ranking one, you should reconsider graduate school. School should be about improving yourself. While you will meet new people and form new connections, you should not be jumping into any romantic conclusions. If it does happen for you, then great! But don't be actively seeking it. If you're in a program to manhunt, I'm sorry but your spot in that program should go to someone else.
  12. Meh. I just heard back from SOPHAS, although my material was listed "Mailed 10/30/2013," I'm actually queued for the next batch, so no one has received my application yet. I need to chill. Or make a SOPHAS voodoo doll and stab repeatedly.
  13. SOPHAS will send out applications with 2/3 required letters. Whether or not a school considers that as "complete," depends on the school. Some schools consider mailing by SOPHAS to be complete, while others require ALL materials to be submitted. You should check with each school.
  14. Damn. I haven't heard back from BU yet and I think my SOPHAS was mailed out around the same time as everyone else in this thread.... I feel like I should email someone about this.
  15. Has Peace Corps helped you in your pursuit of public health? I'm feeling like a heavy underdog here and I'm trying to prep myself in case I have to apply again.
  16. Damn. I haven't heard anything from BU and my stuff was submitted the same day. All I have is a confirmation from NYU and I got that before my SOPHAS was even mailed out. I think I'm going insane with paranoia.... Anyways, best of luck to you!
  17. Honestly, your GPA is much better than mine. I'm a massive underdog in the graduate programs I'm trying to get into right now. The best advice I have to offer right now is that you never know if you're a right fit for a program until you try. And if you're not, try and try again. Although, I have to say this...if you've been studying math and physics, your Q score should be much higher than 150. And I have no idea how you broke the scale and scored 173 on V. Please clarify this.
  18. When choosing the schools I wanted to apply to, I only considered two major factors: location and program. I actually never considered cost...until right now. I finally browsed the tuition and fees pages and did the math...and my god, an MPH can get pretty expensive. My question for you all is, how much money are you willing to pay for your MPH? A lot of the "big name" universities come with an added expense; do you think it's worth it?
  19. I submitted all my applications recently. Right now I'm at the waiting stage and it's killing me. I keep playing "what if" scenarios in my head. Like, what if I get rejected from all the programs I applied to? Or what if I get into my top choice?! I'm fluctuating back and forth between confidence and despair. Basically I'm driving myself insane.
  20. child of 2....your signature....made me hit my computer screen.......
  21. When was that? My apps were mailed out the same day but I haven't heard from anything. My nerves are starting to get to me.
  22. Just out of curiosity, did you guys receive any emails from the individual schools about receiving your apps?
  23. Congrats! I'm super jealous you heard back from somewhere so soon! *sits and continues to wait*
  24. I'm applying for public health nutrition. I do think that NYU's program looks underwhelming. I just figured, why the hell not?
  25. When I was asking for letters, I made it clear when I wanted my application to be submitted by so they had a deadline to work off of. I emailed them about a month before this deadline to remind them. I suppose I'm lucky because all my writers submitted their letters shortly after the second email. If they hadn't, I would have sent out another series of reminders at the 2 weeks mark.
