  1. (And I am out of up votes, but thank you to everyone for the anniversary wishes!)
  2. I have a couple of friends who are faculty members on adcoms this year, both in fields unrelated to political science. Both have been kind enough to listen to me mindf^k (sorry, there's no polite synonym) why I've gotten into certain programs that seemed beyond my reach, and flatly rejected from programs that seemed like great fits with better odds. The only pattern I could discern is that all of the programs that accepted me were public, and most of the ones that rejected me were private. One of the friends gently smacked me upside the head and said that I was looking for patterns where there were none. He went on to say that "if you could suspend your life and apply again next year with the exact same record, you would get different results." Edit: punctuation.
  3. A silent weekend will eat holes in my stomach. I board a Europe-bound plane shortly before the crack of dawn on Tuesday morning for a "romantic anniversary celebration." It's going to be a lot more romantic if I'm not checking my email every five minutes. There will probably be lots of conversations about where we will be living in the fall... wish I could board that plane with all answers in hand.
  4. There's a Harvard acceptance from March of last year with the comment "Only acceptance of this cycle! Don't lose hope at any time!" When my first few decisions were all rejections, I read that comment over and over. Sending warm wishes for Yale, MIT, and Chicago MA acceptances your way...
  5. To the person who was rejected from Stanford and wishes you'd told them you were African-American... When the sting of the rejection wears off, I hope you feel pretty crappy about that comment. You should feel crappy about it. Edited for grammar and anger.
  6. A (completely expected) Stanford rejection here. Kudos to them for getting those rejections out so quickly!
  7. I'm guessing this is unlikely since most of you who applied to Berkeley applied to their political science department, but does anyone know anything about previous years' offers for their Jurisprudence and Social Policy (JSP) program? I can't find anything. I know I have five years funding (edit: but no clue how much), including two fellowship years and some summer money, but Berkeley seems to vary dramatically from department to department.
  8. The University of Michigan's plan is particularly appealing because they also pay health/vision/dental premiums for dependents. For students with partners and/or children, this is worth thousands of dollars a year more than the University of California's plan. It's a huge "pro" for Michigan on my list.

  10. Claiming an unsolicited offer to apply to St. Edwards University Master of Arts in College Student Development. It's like they know I've been stung today Huge congratulations to everyone who got good news today... especially those of you who got a first acceptance! We can't claim it's too quiet around here now.
  11. Jumping up and down and squeeeeeing like a thirteen year old. YAY! Congratulations.
  12. On the off chance that the admissions committee at Stanford completely overlooks "fit" and calls me with an acceptance offer this morning, they're going to get an earful of the loudest, most ridiculous hiccups ever.
  13. I don't have the details of my Berkeley funding offer yet, but I'm pretty sure that either my acceptance letter or my POI mentioned that their magic date is April 15. Here's what UCLA says: "We would like to know as soon as possible whether you will accept your award. I would be grateful if you could let me know your decision informally before our Graduate Division’s April 11 deadline... If we have not heard from you by April 11th, we will assume you are not coming."
  14. Yale had two waves of offers last year-- one that was early in February, and a second, smaller one late in February. The first wave (ditto previous years) appears to be by unofficial POI email. The second is by a blast email that directs applicants to the website. Unless they've changed things, I would expect the first offers to come in a maddening trickle.
  15. Note that although the 15th is the most common response deadline, it's not universal. According to my offer letter, UCLA's graduate division has an April 11th deadline.
