  1. Claiming the (expected) Chicago rejection that just popped up.
  2. In the same vein as TheGnome, I'll share that I rejected a funded offer from the University of Washington today. Since they appear to be admitting on a rolling basis, I hope that spot finds its way to someone who's still waiting. Edit: IR
  3. I can't believe I am saying this, but I'd prefer an (expected) bloodbath to silence. Chicago must be about ready to unleash its PhD rejections and MAPSS offers.
  4. Only one of them includes the phrase "GSB." The other spells it out. If you use the words "Stanford" and "political" in your search instead, they're the two most recent entries. For whatever it's worth, they were notified in completely different ways. Where there's no blast email, hope remains. Good luck to you!
  5. They made two offers last Friday...
  6. Thank you! That's perfect. Succinct, respectful, non-awkward. If you're free in a couple of weeks, I may be in the market for car negotiations, too

  8. Thank you, James. This should reveal how completely awkward I feel about money, but how would you phrase a request like this in a respectful, professional way? Any tips would be very helpful.
  9. You're right, but I am allergic to negotiating. I guess I'm going to need to get over that pretty quickly.

  11. I just learned that my airfare budget for Michigan is $200 less than my airfare. Anyone who's been down this road before... did you pay the difference, or did schools increase what they were willing to pay if there were no cheaper alternatives?
  12. surprise attack
  13. pooper scooper
  14. Check the academic calendars at the schools where you applied. I did that today and found that of the three answers I'm hoping for this week, two of the schools are open for classes tomorrow. Edit: and even if a school isn't open for classes, the adcom may still be there.

  16. I haven't seen any mention of spouses/partners. My husband is staying home. It would be nice to have him there, but the events are for students, and the travel budget seems to be about $500 for airfare plus transportation to and from the airport and events, and a shared hotel room or lodging with a grad student in the program.
  17. distributive property
  18. Identity property
  19. identity function
  20. step function
  21. I didn't think if that until after I booked two of mine. Do we have any idea if the remaining programs plan their visits around each other?
  22. I am nowhere but here. I need closure. Pretty please, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, and Yale? Bring closure soon.
  23. It's oh so quiet... it's oh so still... So let's see. We're expecting (fingers crossed) Stanford, Yale, and Columbia this week. And didn't someone say that Chicago promises closure by the 18th?
  24. Turn the map rightside up before you board the train Nonstop to The Hague? Huh, that's interesting. I wonder why. Frankfurt or Amsterdam would make much more sense in terms of being able to catch connections. There's a nonstop to Tokyo from SD, so if you don't mind a connection, I'm sure you could reach anywhere else in Asia with only one stop.
  25. I've spent a bit of time thinking about airport logistics because of family and other travel commitments. Each coast has its conveniences, but a bigger consideration to me is availability of direct flights. I moved from a big east coast city to a big west coast city to a small west coast city, and travel from a small city is a real pain. I thought Cornell was a great fit for me, but I breathed a small sigh of relief that I wouldn't have to try to get into and out of Ithaca. And interestingly, I think you can get to Europe non-stop from San Diego, but not to China.
