  1. Don't worry too much about all the small details unless you're really anal about technology. For the most part, any MBP will be good enough for your daily tasks unless you plan on running power hungry graphics intensive programs such as video games or computer graphics applications then you might experience a bit of a slow down. The big difference between the 13inch and 15inch: The 13 inch MBP uses older technology for their CPUs (basically the GHz you're worried about). The 15 inch uses newer technology which will allow you to use more programs without any noticeable slow downs. I don't think you should worry about the CPU in either the 13 or 15 inch. The 13 inch also uses a slightly less powerful graphics card, but I honestly don't think you'd be able to tell the difference. I would steer clear of the more expensive options for either the 13 or 15 inch. They only offer a bit more powerful CPU and a bigger hard drive, but you really don't need either. I think either the 13 or 15 inch should work out for you, but it's really how much you want to spend and whether you'd prefer a 13 or 15 inch MBP. You should definitely go to an Apple store and test out the laptops to find out what size screen you'd feel more comfortable with.
  2. I'm on the list again, but it's a reasonable 18 posts.
  3. I don't understand how your GPA started over when you transferred. Your grades should be taken into account even if you transferred and you will need to submit transcripts from all schools when you apply. Stanford http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Gradadm/Prerequisites.htm It is pretty tough to say whether you will get in or not, but I'm leaning towards a no for both schools. It certainly doesn't hurt to try though. Maybe you should consult your Professors concerning school suggestions.
  4. I have a friend who tried to do that same thing. She had no background in CS (graduated from Berkeley in some other science major) and ended up with only a BS in CS at a nearby CSU. There are a lot of prereq classes that you need to take for your graduate level courses. And those prereq classes are normally upper level undergrad CS classes which have lower level undergrad CS and Math classes as prereqs. You can probably see why she only received a BS in CS instead of a MS now. You'd probably have to take the CS GRE to even have a shot at a top-ranked university.
  5. I was a RA at Stanford, but that didn't get me into the school. I specifically told them during my interview for the RA position that I wanted to go to Stanford for grad school and they seemed pretty interested in that.
  6. Introduce yourself and keep it short. Don't turn this into a long email or else the Professor will probably just ignore it.
  7. I emailed the director for my program because it said that we should if we had any class selection questions. He seemed really puzzled when I asked him to look over my schedule because he said that he didn't need to give me an okay, but also mentioned that everything looks fine.
  8. still apartment searching!! AHHH!!!

    Unsubsidized Loans

I just received an email from the school yesterday and you're allowed to ask for the remainder of the loan if you asked for a reduced amount initially.
  10. I actually have a schedule of classes I've come up with for the entirety of my program. This is a little habit of mine since my freshman year of college.
  11. I've registered for 3 classes. I should have no issues with one class. I might encounter a few problems with the second class. And I think I'm in over my head for the third class even though I meet all the prereqs.

    Unsubsidized Loans

If I accept the award and have unused funds left over during my Fall semester, can I just pay the principal amount plus any interest?
  13. That's pretty much it. Person A gets all, but the last 10 questions correct. Person B gets all, but the first 10 questions correct. Person A will receive a higher score.

    Unsubsidized Loans

I was actually trying to say that if I decline a portion of it now and need more of it during that same semester, can I ask for the other portion? I did shoot off an email to the school, but I'm waiting on a reply.
  15. I will have to use a loan for my first semester of school. I will have to tap into unsubsidized loans and I would like to know if I can take decline some of it now and ask for it later? I know interest accumulates each month and I think it would be in my best interest to only take what I need. I also don't want to take more than I actually need. They gave me 3 options: Accept, Decline, Reduce. With those 3 options, can I reduce the reward and ask for the rest later if I need it?
  16. It's really hard to say if you can get into a top CS program. Other than just taking a few CS classes and doing well in them, what else will you have?
  17. I'm going to assume you're in the Bay Area since you mentioned Stanford. I have a friend who did something like that. She graduated from UC Berkeley in some science major and then went to SJSU to get a MS in CS. She later realized that it was a lot tougher to do all that and she only received her BS in CS. What schools were you considering to take classes at? You can go straight for a MS in CS, but then you are required to take the CS GRE since you did not graduate with a BS in CS. The test is basically comprised of all the topics you would have learned in a CS program (algorithms and data structures, computer architecture, operating systems, etc.).
  18. I use dropbox and also skydrive (25gb). Dropbox is more convenient than Skydrive because you can access the folders directly on your hard drive and it automatically syncs online. With skydrive you need to go online to access the files and folders which is pretty inconvenient. You can download another program which will let you access them on your desktop, but I still think it's inconvenient that you have to download another program to even get those dropbox features.
  19. Writing is probably my weakest area, but I managed a 4.5 on the GRE AW. I basically followed a template which said that it would pretty much give me a 4.5. If you plan on retaking it, then I suggest you read the Barron's section for the AW and just follow their template recommendation to get a 4.5.
  20. My vote also goes to Timbuk2. I'm waiting for their SF warehouse sale to pick up a ton of bags.
  21. I've decided to first do a MS before going for my PhD. What should I be doing during my MS to help my PhD application?
  22. My Kaplan Practice GRE score was about a combined 870. My GPA was a 3.1 and my actual GRE was a combined 1250. Don't worry too much about the Kaplan practice test. I studied maybe 3 weeks before the exam. I will be dedicating more time for my next round of applications.
  23. I will be 24 when I start my MS this Fall and I hope to start my PhD in 2012, 2014, or 2016. I think I might work for at least 2 years after my MS before I go for my PhD. I basically did that after I got my BS. At the moment, I have 2 schools on my list of schools to apply to for my PhD. I should start studying for the GRE again since my scores will no longer be valid. Maybe I should also start drafting my SOP.
  24. already planning on schools for my PhD...

  25. Isn't there usually a spot in the application where you indicate if you're reapplying? What do you plan on doing to improve your application this time around?
