  1. If you guys do buy inkjet printers, then I would invest in a continuous ink system to save on ink costs. Only get this if you do print a lot otherwise it will be a total waste of money.
  2. Can you ask them for an extension?
  3. Most likely they won't give you a specific date, but more of a specific range like from February to May.
  4. UCI sends out decisions until May which is ridiculous in my opinion. This is based on experience and an email I received from admissions.
  5. Although I'm not exactly passed post-admission, I still feel like I will be completely clueless in grad school. I feel like I should start to review everything I learned during my undergrad so I'm at least somewhat prepared and look at the syllabus for classes I might take so that I can prepare myself for whatever I may be learning.
  6. I plan on visiting the Professors once I know where I'm going for sure. Since they're all from the same school, I have no problems seeing all 3. And I also need to pick up a book of publications which I let one of my Professors borrow and forgot to get back. Hopefully he knows that is mine and not his to keep.
  7. I always say that it never hurts to try unless you're really not financially able to pay for the applications. The worst that could happen is you receive a rejection letter, but at least you're not left with that lingering thought of "what if I applied, would I have been accepted". During my high school years I had a good GPA, decent SAT scores, active in school clubs, and also in after school sports. I only applied to one school because I didn't know what I wanted to do and it was the closest school near home. With my profile I could have gotten into really good schools and I'm left with that feeling of what would have happened if I did apply to other schools. This time around, I applied to a variety of schools instead of just that one school because I know I would have been accepted. I'm probably not helping or making any sense at this point, but I would say that you could either stay at UCI and pursue that PhD or you can reapply next year and see what happens.
  8. And on PC, there's a nifty program called Copernic Desktop Search which basically does the same thing.
  9. I would first research graduate programs that you are interested in. Forget whether you think you can get in or not, just come up with a list. Try to come up with an outline for your SOP. Study for the GRE and subject GRE. I would try to have a few drafts written for your SOP by August and have it finalized by September. You can also send your finalized SOP to your LORs to look over and having it done early gives them time to give you feedback which you can use if you want. It also helps them understand your intention to attend graduate school. Speaking of LORs, make sure you pick 3 reliable ones. Make sure you let them know when you'll be sending the requests for LORs and also include the due dates for these applications. This is all the comes to mind at the moment, I know there's a bit more and I'll probably post again when I remember.
  10. I applied to a program that required a 350 word max for my SOP. I definitely had to cut out a lot.
  11. Depends on what you're looking for in a display and how much you'd like to spend. At the moment, I'm waiting for HP to release the zr24w which will retail around $375 - $425. It's supposed to be out at the end of this month or early next. That monitor is 24" and it's little brother is about 22" at $289. Also, if you're pretty anal about colors on a laptop, then I would steer clear of the 13" mbp and go straight for the 15". It's been a while, but I read that the 13" displays less color than the 15". I'd look into it more since I don't really remember the specifics.
  12. A friend at my dream school and in the program I hope to be accepted to emailed me last night to ask whether I've been accepted yet. He said that the school opens on Monday and that I should call to ask about the decision. I really want to, but I don't think my heart can take it if it turns out to be a rejection. I imagine it will go something like this: *ring ring* Assistant: Hello? Me: Hi, have decisions been made for applications? Assistant: Yes, we are preparing to send out decisions this week. Would you like to know of your decision now? Me: Uhhs...*gulp*...yes? Assistant: What is your name? Me: joro Assistant: Let me go check your application. Well... Me: *hangs up* Assistant: Hello? Hello?
  13. You could try selling your Macbook and using the money towards a new Macbook. Your laptop has better resell value than non-Apple laptops.
  14. With your past qualifications, why are you so worried about getting a job based on what grad school you attend? Job descriptions for video game companies want people who have previous work experience on AAA title games and you seem to have all this. You have me a bit confused.
  15. If your goal is games/movies, I would have to say that the movie industry is already tough to break in as it is. I know for a fact that a certain company received over 35,000 applications and only hired 55 from those for that year. I think the game industry is a lot easier than this, but just thought I'd throw out some hard facts for you. Another company received over 46,000 applications and only hired about 100.
  16. The word on the street is that the Stanford MSCS program is their cash cow. It's a great school no doubt, but I don't think you'll suffer if you attended Princeton instead. What are your future plans in terms of where you want to work?
  17. I'm pretty sure unless I misinterpreted this: Last GATS login: 03/18/2010 12:32pm (63 previous logins)
  18. I was being a bit curious and decided to email one of my schools asking when decisions will be made. I got a typical response about decisions being sent out, but at the top of the email sits the time of my last login and how many previous logins I've had. From mid-January till now, I have checked my application just for this one school 63 times.
  19. I sent one email to one department and they sent me an acceptance the day after. I really want to email another one, but I'm a bit scared because I had originally asked when decisions will be sent out back in January and they gave me an answer for later this month or early next month. If I were to ask again, I might sound like a pest and get placed on the rejections list.
  20. Grad school like dating? We present ourselves detailing every good quality we have and how we would make a good couple. Then we wait for a response to see if they would like to start dating. In your case, you're responded with an acceptance to start dating and you happily replied stating that you will date her exclusively. Now I'm not sure how funding goes into dating, but maybe here are a few options: -You're waiting to see how much she will put out. -You're waiting to see if she prefers to take care of you, pay half, or have you pay for everything.
  21. No, they don't change from what I've seen. I started my SOP in June last year for my Fall 2010 application.
  22. Less than a month left and I still haven't even heard back from at least half of the schools I applied to. I'm guessing I'll probably be a part of the April is it thread.
  23. Isn't there some sort of alumni page at Columbia you can go through to find out where they've ended up at? Also, why did you apply there if you knew you would suffer financially? Congrats on being accepted either way, but it's up to you whether you think paying $18k+ a semester would be worth it. I personally think you can get a job anywhere even if you didn't graduate from a prestigious university, but that's my own personal way of thinking and it probably doesn't make sense to a lot of people. Good luck on your decision, I sure wish I could go to Columbia. Then again I wouldn't be able to afford it either.
  24. If you already know, then just let them know now. There's really no reason to wait if you have fully decided on this school. And congrats by the way. I imagine if my first choice accepts me, I will be responding with my answer in less than a minute after they sent it.
  25. 1. Take CS GRE if you have time. 2. Take grad classes at local university. 3. No need to retake GRE. 4. Find maybe a research assistant position in a university group. 5. Re-work SOP.
