  1. I just went to check my online application status and the end page where you 'sign' your name and put the date. I put my name, but then instead put my birth date. I submitted this application in November and only noticed it now. No way to change it either, I hope they don't even look at that. Haha. EDIT: Okay it seems the system did that themselves. I went to check the pdf form of my application and it shows a signed form of 10/20/2009 at 12am.
  2. My plan B would be to just do whatever I want. I'm really wealthy and don't need to go to school, but I wanted to pursue a graduate degree since I enjoyed learning. Actually, I'm sure I'll get into at least one school so no need for a plan B. But plan B would either be to go back to my undergrad school or to find a job.
  3. If your GPA shows an upward trend, I'd probably mention that too. You can say that you're going to keep on going up.
  4. You'll get a lot of mixed suggestions about addressing your low GPA in your personal statement. I think it's okay to do it, but to be careful of how you address it. Is there a valid reason behind your low GPA?
  5. Score extremely high on the general and subject GRE. If you've done relevant research and published a paper, then it might help with the GPA problem. My Professor said that grad admissions cares about research, GRE, and GPA in that order. I don't think you have a shot at any top graduate schools, but it doesn't mean it isn't possible at all. If you want to get into a good school, then you might want to consider attending a low tier grad school first where you will work on research and hopefully produce published work. Then you can transfer to a better school.
  6. They have a counter that keeps track of how many times you visit your status page. When it becomes decision time they take the top 10 with the highest count and decide on who they will be admitting. Another school rejects those who have over a certain number of status page checks. What makes this fun is that you don't know if the school you're checking either favors status checks or not.
  7. Bay Area weather is nice. Doesn't get too hot here, maybe 100 at the hottest. Winter will drop to around 40s in the morning and heat up to about mid 50s in the afternoon. We don't get snow here except in the hills and if you want to ski you'll have to drive about 4-6 hours. We do get earthquakes though and it doesn't really bother people too much unless it's over a 6.0.
  8. I've only actually checked housing costs at my first choice. I've neglected to check anything at the other places I applied to.
  9. Bring her soup and help her get better. Well, good luck on finding a replacement. I emailed 4 Professors and only 1 responded to me. Another did respond, but he said that he's been out of academia for so long that he's unable to really write one.
  10. I'm a PhD drop out. Haha.
  11. I'm not as old as any of you and I'd probably be considered young, but I sure wish I did graduate studies right out of undergrad.
  12. End of March or early April for my first choice. The rest may start coming in this month.
  13. I take into account a lot of factors for paying off debt. I have savings bonds which I have been receiving since I was in elementary school. I plan on using whatever I earn throughout my internships towards paying anything school related and I expect to make at least $70k+ starting out immediately after grad school. This of course is just being optimistic again. If I were to attend a public University in California, the government takes care of most of my tuition and I would definitely be debt free within a year of graduating.
  14. I did not choose schools only based on ranking, but more on the specific programs. There are 5 schools I would love to apply to, but given my profile I don't think I'd even get noticed so I never bothered. You're actually applying to those 5: Stanford, CMU, Cornell, Berkeley, and U of Washington. Other than that, I applied to schools I want to attend and know I'll enjoy attending. My top 3 from my list would be TAMU, UCSD, and Utah. I think it's funny that I was a RA at Stanford and I can't even get in.
  15. After you submit your SOP, never look at it again or else you'll start finding things you should have included along with mistakes you've made.
  16. 申し訳ありませんが、私は日本語をたくさん話すことはありません。
  17. Try to get in contact with Professors you'd be interested in working with and maybe attend conferences they'll be presenting at so that you'll have a chance to talk in person about related interests. I know for Stanford they ask if you've communicated with any Professors regarding your application. I guess you can take the CS GRE since you've been out of academia for some time now. Maybe search for summer research programs, though I'm not sure what programs are available to non-students. I'm sure there are since I snagged one right after I graduated. If you're near one of those schools, perhaps you can see if you can work in their research lab for free. So during this early period in your application, try to get that GRE out of the way. Work on your SOP early and tailor it to each school.
  18. Wow, accepted to pretty much every single program you applied to. Congrats!! Although, I'm jealous at the same time!! But since we're not in the same program, I'll let it slide.
  19. I would call her if possible and ask for a possible deadline. For me, I had an itching feeling that this guy would screw me over a 2nd time after he seemed so sincere before about getting it in on time. So I went seeking a backup and poof I have complete applications (except I found out that one school had problems opening one of the letters and another school has not received my GRE scores!!!).
  20. Wow, from nursing to creative writing for grad school?
  21. Ahh, cool. He did mention it would be 20 years for non-public service jobs, right? It currently lists 25 years, but I guess they're doing a revision on this now.
  22. I think it was more on the lines of proposing such an idea and not fact (at least not yet). My question is...if our loan is forgiven after a certain amount of time, who becomes responsible for the remainder of that debt?
  23. No no, it must be GPS!! When she went to visit the schools, they saw her GPS.
  24. My friend had a 4.0 GPA, 1440 GRE, and I think only 2 publications. He was rejected by every school he applied to except for UC Davis. He said that he thinks that grad admissions only cares about publications if you have a MS.
