  1. You did really well this year! Congratulations! I'm surprised to learn that MD is your ultimate goal and that you want to do a PhD first and then a MD. Most medical anthropologists I know started their careers as a MD and went on to pursue a degree in anthropology. But not all medical anthropologists have a PhD in anthropology In any case, I really admire your determination and courage to spend the next 10+ years in grad school. Only people who have a clear goal like yourself will have the determination to do two doctorates! I think it's remarkable! Please forgive my ignorance, but I am wondering why a Mdiv. is relevant to your career goal.
  2. I'm really sorry. But did you not defer your offer at Indiana last year?
  3. Hi wycl0768, thanks very much for your info. It's good to know that St. X housing is good. Do you know the differences between a catagory 1* and a category 1 room? Are Category 2,3,4 rooms really filthy?
  4. Hi Ennue, I am interested in learning more about the academic market in your country. Are universities in Netherlands happy to hire PhDs from the UK/USA? Do you have to be fluent in Dutch to be employed in Netherlands universities? How is an Oxford/Cambridge PhD regarded in Netherlands?
  5. Are you planning to visit Netherlands regularly (like twice a year)? If so maybe you can buy an open return ticket. Some airlines allow you to do that. BTW - I noticed that you're from Utrecht. I'm visiting Amsterdam this April with my family. Is Utrecht worth visiting? We'd like to see Dick bruna huis.
  6. This is an interesting and useful post. In a few weeks time I'll be attending an important conference where many key scholars in my field will be there. I am becoming quite nervous now because I am not very confident in social situations. I think part of my shyness stems from the fact that English is not my first language. Although people think my English is absolutely fine, I can't help feeling insecure about it. I also have difficulty making small talk with strangers. Is there anything that I can do to overcome my insecurity? Specifically, how should I approach people in a conference? What are the etiquettes of networking in academia?
  7. Thank you. Which St. X accommodation will you recommend?
  8. 18 pages!!!! I never know there are so many of us out there who want to do a PhD in anthropology! Cheers to you all!
  9. I've heard similar stories about the anthro department at Berkeley. It seems to be the trend of our discipline, unfortunately. Fewer and fewer departments are interested in investing equally in the traditional four fields.
  10. Also check out the University of Minnesota.
  11. Looking at the votes, money doesn't seem to be a decisive factor to a lot of people. Well, if a very prestigious program offers you partial funding, and you have support from your family to help you get by, you'll not have a hard time to choose. In that case most people will choose the school that has a better reputation, even if it means they'll have to live on a tight budget. However, if your second choice is willing to support you financially, and the very prestigous does not, will the choice be so obvious? I doubt it. Having said that, it must be extremely difficult to decline Harvard.
  12. But what if the situation is not about opting between 'more money' and 'less money', but between having some funding and having no funding at all?
  13. Hi Fellows! I'm accepted to St. Cross College. Does anyone have any insider information about St. Cross' college accommodation? My budget for accommodation is £500/pm (including bills). Would I find better deals in private lettings? I personally found college accomodation at St Cross pricy, considering that you'll need to share bathroom with on average 3-6 people. But again it may be worse in private let. Also, what are the differences between a catagory 1* and a category 1 room? I don't think I can afford a Cat. 1* room but I'd like to know if it's worth the money. Are Cat. 2,3,4 rooms filthy? I really don't mind a small room, but it must be clean and well-maintained. Thanks in advance for your help.
  14. I think we need to remember that your university can't make you or break you. It will have a significant impact, of course, but in my opinion, where you get your degree will not constitute an infinite hurdle in your academic job search if you're a good scholar. From what I see in my field, UK PhDs did make their ways across the atlantic. Here are some examples: - Professor X, PhD from LSE, has been a tenured professor at UC Berkeley since mid 1990s. - Professor Y, PhD from Oxford, has been a tenured professor at Washington University in St. Louis since 2010. - Professor Z, PhD from Cambridge, has been a tenured professor at Stanford since mid 2000. I'm sure there are more successful stories out there. I agree that UK PhD students won't have as much time as their counterparts in the U.S. to gain teaching and publishing experience, but I know some very proactive students out there who are working deligently towards their CVs. When it comes to job searching, a lot of time it comes down to luck. The decision is yours, and the warnings brought up in this thread are valid, but it doesn't mean that you are ruled out immediately because your degree is from abroad.
  15. I'm surprised to learn that many people, like myself, work a few part- time jobs to make ends meet. I cannot find a full time job related to my professional qualification (I have a master's degree in anthropology). I think I would have a better chance in bigger, more expensive cities, but I'm reluctant to make the move. So here I am: a qualitative researcher at the department of health and a community worker in a charity (both are part-time).
  16. I only know of the Student Room. I don't really like it.
  17. Hi Anthroman, I am surprised that you did not apply to the University of Washington. I love the UW. The antho department there has a reputable and dedicated team of NW Natives specialists. The university's ranking is, of course, very important. But I have to say a UW PhD is definitely as competitive as a Harvard PhD, especially if you want to be an anthropologist of Native American. I did not apply to the UW because I have a family here in the UK, so I think I'm heading to Oxford. Is Oxford one of your top choices?
  18. Hello all, I have been accepted to Oxford and I think there is a high chance that I'd go. Anyone who is certain that they'll be heading to Oxford this fall?
  19. Last year I deferred an alright programme to the year of 2011 because they did not offer me any funding. This year I applied to 5 schools and have been accepted to some of the best universities out there. If you're unsure, don't go (especially if you applied to PhD programmes)!
  20. Hello, I'm wondering if any of you can comment on the atmosphere of oxford's anthropology department. PM me please if you would.
  21. Hi tem11, I remember you from last year. How is Oxford treating you? I am offered a place in anthropology and I think I'm going this fall. Do you enjoy studying at Oxford?
  22. I am EU citizen and I have been working in the UK for nearly four years. In order to be classified as Home/EU students for fee purpose, you'll need to fulfill the following requirements: 1) be EU/UK Citizens 2) reside in the UK in the past 3 years for reasons other than full time education prior to the beginning of your course
  23. I pay home students fee. I'm hoping for ESRC nomination. No words yet.
  24. Just got my offer today! Letter dated Jan 28. Let me know when you get your good news!
  25. Thanks! DPhil in Social Anthropology. No words of funding yet.
