  1. I may have an opportunity to work as a volunteer officer for the World Health Organization this March. Do you think volunteering is a good way to start if one is interested in working for organizations like the UN or WHO in the future?
  2. Thanks Gigsed. Do you mind me PM you if I have further questions?
  3. Hi Gigsed, first of all thanks for your reply. I asked about the taught master degrees because I am not sure where I stand with a research master in the U.K. I know that anything above 70% is good but my grade did not break the 70% line (68%). Ideally I'd like to go straight into a PhD program. Unfortunately I have not (yet) been offered any acceptance by the U.S. universities. That's why in the past few days I have started thinking about my second round application. For MPhil/PhD program I'm only considering SOAS and LSE (based on fit). The taught masters are sort of a back-up plan and that was why I asked how competitive it was to get into Oxford or Cambridge's taught master program (Medical Anthropology). Alas, you're right, what will schools think of me if I apply to taught master with a MRes?
  4. Since I've only received rejection letters so far, I have started thinking about next year and the possibility of doing grad studies in the UK. I would like to hear from folks who have done or are doing their postgraduate studies (taught master or MPhil/PhD) at the following institutions: SOAS, LSE, Oxford and Cambridge. In particular, what do you think of the taught master programs (i.e., Medical Anthropology) at SOAS, Cambridge, and Oxford? Is admission to the taught master programs at these three schools competitive? Also, do you think I stand a chance for MPhil/PhD admission at the above institutions if I already have a research master degree in the UK (my dissertation mark was 68%)? I'm only considering LSE for MPhil/PhD because their taught masters are prohibitively expensive (nearly £9000 for home/EU students; unbelievable). Many thanks in advance.
  5. Just called the department. The decision mail has been posted out yesterday. Good luck everyone!
  6. I didn't ask because I was quite nervous on the phone. I wonder when the admission office will send out notification. Please I can't bear this anymore.
  7. That's very strange. They seem to send out one or two acceptances/rejections at a time instead of sending blind mails to everyone.
  8. Just called the department. They said decision have been made and they have forwarded their decision to the admission office so we should expect to receive notification from the admission office soon. I asked how many international students have been admitted and they said they have admitted two. Hope this helps.
  9. Hi Nina, I am international and I have not received any email from Cornell. When you said "emails" are you referring to "acceptance email" or "rejection email"?
  10. I agree. Why do they have to tortue us like this? I am international and I have not received a rejection email (yet). Sigh.

  12. Congrats vanishingpoint! 5 acceptances = big victory!
  13. If I don't get into any of the American schools this year I'm going to apply to the LSE and SOAS next year. I don't think I can afford to live in central London so I will most likely be a commuter. Do you know of any decent areas in the outskirts of London that's 30 minutes to an hour away from Central London? Is it possible to rent a one bedroom with a £800 budget?
  14. You can always apply to Post-doc in the US after you finish your degree here in the UK. If you think St Andrews is a perfect school for you there is no reason why you should give it up because of the academic myth. In the end of the day it's the quality of your research that gets you the job.
  15. Has anyone done a MPhil at SOAS? Are the research methods courses daunting?
  16. just saw an acceptance from the result page. congratulations! to the IUB poster: which subfield are you in? do you know if IUB has sent out all their acceptance offer yet?
  17. Thank you so much for your reply. Do you know how many people have been offered acceptance thusfar? Just to get an idea. Thank you very much in advance.
  18. thanks, but i found it hard to stay optimistic.
  19. Besides the two acceptances (via phone) on Feb 10, has anyone heard anything from Cornell? Have they made their decisions yet?
  20. by mail? are we applying grad school in 1910?
  21. i'm international and i've not heard a single thing from the universities that i applied. i'm starting to lose hope...
  22. Hi Nina, Thanks for the info. Does she say she has emailed all those 20 people on the waitlist?
  23. Nina, have you just received the waitlist letter an hour or so ago?
  24. Let's get this thread active! Congrats to the fellow who just got an acceptance from Chicago (according to the result page). Please share more information with us!
  25. Is the "they" referred to Stanford or UCI?
