  1. Some of you on this forum may remember me. Yes it's my second round this year! I've already had 2 offers so this year certainly looks brighter for me! I would love to hear from fellow anthro applicants and of course, from those who so generously shared their thoughts with me last year. Let me know how you get on with your first quarter/semester!
  2. Me too. I am so looking forward to the King's Speech. I live in the UK and I don't think it's released yet. Am I wrong?
  3. I've already had offers from a few UK schools. They want me to reply them in 6 weeks (that will be late Jan). The problem is, I'm still waiting to hear from the schools in the US, which won't start reviewing applications till mid-Jan. Also, I won't know anything about funding in the UK until May or June. I'm wondering if anyone is in similar situation, and how do they handle the different time line?
  4. I'm starting to get a bit nervous, because the department said they aim to make a decision before Christmas! Though I'm not sure if they are still sticking to their plans given today's weather condition. Sigh, anxiously waiting!
  5. Anyone watched 'The Kids are Alright'? It's very funny and the actresses are amazing! Highly recommend! Oh and I have yet to see 'the girl with a dragon tattoo'.
  6. I'm just curious - what are the major drawbacks of living in Oxford?
  7. I'm considering Duke University and want to know a bit more about Durham. What's the atmosphere like in Durham? Is it safe? Is transportation good? Can two people survive on a 20,000 grant? (my spouse is unable to work because he's not US citizen) Many thanks!
  8. I'm waiting too! Some of you may know that I'm a second round applicant. I've applied to two US schools and two UK schools this year. I've already had an offer from last year (I deferred admission to 2011). I look forward to getting some better offers this year!
  9. Hi wreckofthehope, Thanks! I didn't know anything about Oxford's college system but my potential supervisor asked me to choose her college, which is St. Cross. Any comments on St. Cross? Thanks, Peanut
  10. Many thanks! I do have a few more questions: - What are colleges' roles in postgraduate (DPhil) education? - Does Oxford have good facilities (computers, wifi, libraries)? - Are people friendly? Does Oxford have a diverse and open environment for discussions (balderdash, can you PM me more about the "cutthroat" social science that you referred to? I'm also in social science)? - What sort of accomodations do postgrad students usually go after (I'm 27)?
  11. What is it like to study in Oxford?
  12. You can PM me. I won't be able to edit it but I can give you some advice based on my experience last year.
  13. I understand that this post is about Oxford the city, but I'm wondering if people on this thread could share their experience of applying to Oxford. How competitive is their PhD programs? Please PM me if you have first hand information. Thanks so much in advance!
  14. Hi there, thanks for the answer. I am considering of applying to the LSE. Thanks for recommending The Grosvenor House. It looks really good. I guess it's also pretty pricy. On LSE website a studio costs £750-£1000 pcm. Did you actually pay that much?
  15. What is BU's campus like?
  16. If it's your first round I'll say yes, try again. But if it's your second round already, I think you should just let it be. Next year there will be another application pool so you may need to improve more than ONE aspects if the next pool is an incredibly strong pool. You just never know.
  17. I wonder if any successful anthropology applicants out there are willing to review my Statement of Puropose. I know it's still early for second round applications but I don't want to leave it till September when most of you are immersed in school work. Please PM me or leave a message here if you are willing to offer help. Thanks so much in advance!
  18. Bloomington is undoubtedly a beautiful town. However I am worried about the big state school party culture. Even in graduate school I am told that most social activities center around drinking. I am not a party/sociable person and I worry that I won't fit in the college town culture.
  19. I can confirm this. My friend who was an anthropology major got into UW Soc for his PhD. Obviously with his anthro background he's pretty much a qualitative person, but the dept is heavily quantitative.
  20. Yes, IUB is well known for linguistics. You chose the right place to go.
  21. I have used Acer and Dell's laptops before. None of them lasted for more than 2 years due to battery problems. My next laptop will be a thinkpad. The traditional one is fine but if you have some extra cash thinkpad edge is ideal!
  22. UCLA has a prestigious China studies program. If your focus is Chinese literature and language that will be your place.
  23. I have a question about Case Western Reserve University. What are the atmosphere and social life like in the university? I heard that CWRU is famous for science and medical subjects. Do people in humanities and social science feel very isolated at CWRU?
  24. a salary of about €2000 a month - this sounds very generous. my TA salary in the UK is only £15.00 per hour.
  25. This is very bad. Academic world is small so it's not like they'll never find out. Your name will be listed on the graduate students webpage for at least a couple of years. You may argue that you can get away with it because you're only pursuing a terminal MS, but what if you encounter some of the people in a national conferences later on? How are you going to handle the embarrassment when your plan go busted? I would never ever risk my reputation to do something as foolish as this. Yes it's ALL ABOUT YOU, but you need to think long term. There are many other ways to gather information about a school without paying a visit. I found it extremely helpful to talk to current graduate students and potential advisors. If you haven't done that you should.
