  1. nothing from Stanford. For those who got an acceptance from UCI, do you think they've made their first around acceptance? I have not heard from them at all. Should I pressume that I am rejected or waitlisted?
  2. Congratulations! I've also applied to Irvine so I'm really nervous now! Is the email notification from potential advisor or graduate director? Thanks!
  3. May I ask when did your friend receive the interview notification from Stanford?
  4. Hello, I saw on the result page that someone has received an email from Cornell. If you're the person who left the message can you please elaborate?
  5. For those who have applied to Stanford's Anthropology PhD, have you heard anything back from the department? Since I pressed the "submit" button in December, I have not received any confirmation of my application (except the "Application Successfully Submitted" email). There is no way to check my status online. I've tried to phone the department a couple of times but the person who is responsible for grad school applications is not in. I've also tried email. No response. Is this normal?
  6. I earned 68% for most of my courses in the UK (postgraduate). Based on the conversion table provided by the University of Chicago my US GPA is 3.6+. I believe that other universities will use a more-or-less similar scale. To me a 2:1 should be between 3.4-3.6. I can confidently say that this credential company is not very reliable. Instead of paying for another credential company, I'd suggest you contact this university to see if they have a UK/US conversion chart in its admission office. You can convert your grade based on the information they give you. That way you know for sure.
  7. Hi there, have you received a "file complete" email from each of the school that you applied?
  8. I am reading Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books
  9. Do you mind sharing which university has offered you admission? If you would like to remain anonymous you may enter your result into the result page. Thanks!
  10. After hearing what you said, I feel a little regret for not applying to Minnesota. Several people have encouraged me to look into their PhD program and they all think Minnesota is, like you said, up and coming. The main reason that discouraged me from applying to Minnesota was the absence of China specialists in the department. Other than that I think Minnesota's Anthropology Department is great and I heard the funding is more generous than other public universities. vanishingpoint you definitely have made the right decision!
  11. I hear you. I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere.
  12. I hope to teach and conduct research at a university. I'd die for a tenured professor position but if I can't reach the star I would be happy to teach at a good community college. In my lifetime I hope to publish a few books that will be read beyond the academia. If 7 or 8 years later I find that academia is just not for me, I hope to work for the UN (world health organisation). I am also very open about job positions outside America.
  13. I'm considering of applying to the SOAS if I do not get any funding from the American schools. Does anyone have insights about the SOAS? What's academic environment like? Do you enjoy your experience in the SOAS? What's the housing like in London? Thanks in advance!
  14. Despite the advantages that you observed, still many non-native English speakers are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to the GRE. A Japanese/Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai/Tibetan speaker certainly doesn't have the kind of advantages that you elaborated. And after all, the GRE verbal test does not measure a person's intelligence. I wish more people would acknowledge this fact.
  15. Sigh, I'm in the same situation. Hopefully everything will pan out and my next project is the wedding.
  16. Thanks ladies. Unfortunately I'm not a US citizen nor permanent resident. Things are complicated for us. I'm hoping to get a J1 so that he can work while I am studying but I'm not hopeful. I hate visas.
  17. that's what my fiance going to do as well. may I ask what visa does your husband hold?
  18. Hey dear all - please submit your result to the result page http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/
  19. good or bad - my partner will be the first person i turn to. good - parents.
  20. OMG! That's incredible! Congratulations!!! Do you mind sharing your stats?
  21. If I don't get in anywhere, I think what you said will be the major reason of rejection.
  22. thanks! it's a great feature!
  23. Most of the PhD students that I know are either in a relationship or married before they went to grad school. Very few of them actually tied the knot during grad school. Is this a norm?
  24. I have a few kitchen electronics that I'd like to bring with me to the U.S.A. They include a very expensive digital cooker and a decent digital coffee maker. I know I will need to get a 240v -> 120v voltage converter in order to use these 240v electornics in the U.S.A. I would like to hear from people who have done this. Was it safe?
  25. I suffer from very bad sleeping pattern since I started. But now I only have 3 more applications to work on, thankfully.
