For general interest: the Rochester admission's committee will be meeting during the first week of Feb. so I'd say results should be out by the 10th. Good luck to everyone! It's game time!

Remember, you assume the same prior prob. of success for every school. You could otherwise use the poisson binomial: 1- [∏i(1-pi)]

UC Davis (finally complete...) I would say thankful. While I'm relatively calm (cause I can't do much otherwise anyway), I admit to compulsive email checking at least twice per day...
-
"Your application is currently being reviewed by the committee and we hope to notify all students with a final decision by early February." This sentence put some pressure on. I think February is going to be a stressful month.

UC Davis is irritating me a bit. all other unis have waived the TOEFL requirement and i meet their (UCD's) requirements to be exempt as well, but on their application checklist it STILL says they haven't received them and my app is marked incomplete. it was a steep fee as well ($100) so i was kind of hoping that you were serious

Do you think it's possible to ask for your money back?
-
Me neither, still have one (FSU) to go. And then some European schools (deadlines are in Feb). This process will never end

When Arsenal (COYG) shock BM, it might not be good. But then you'll have a bunch of acceptances to soothe you ^^

Congratulations cautious! I hope this is a good omen for all of us

I think you should go to sleep instead When I drink and realise I am talking about probability that's what I do in any case ^^

An evaluation of my academic profile
zudei replied to correlatesoftheory's topic in Political Science Forum
If you're coming to Scpo for the spring semester, it really shouldn't be hard for you to get into PSIA afterwards. You have a good academic record as well. However, I am not so sure if you'd get financial aid, the program's quite competitive among international students and there are only so few Emile Boutmy scholarships available. Good luck, and enjoy Paris! -
polisci, political economy, PhD. thanks and the same to you!

The majority of my apps are finally done, except for Harvard Kennedy, Rochester and FSU. While some important apps (Rochester!) are still left, I just wanted to mark this occasion and thank you guys for your help! Good luck to everyone!

At least yours replied I sent mine two emails on Friday, called his office, and finally sent him an email on his personal email id last night when I couldn't stand the stress anymore. He did it without replying to any of my emails... At least it is done.

One of my letter writers was off gallivanting (and winning Mahjong tournaments). Caused me quite a lot of stress. Pulled through just yesterday. Submitting 5 apps in a few hours now!

Amen...

Applying to PhD with a sub-3.0 undergraduate GPA
zudei replied to egunes's topic in Political Science Forum
Ok from what I know, and I stress again that this is my personal opinion, that V and AW score does not look good. The low undergrad GPA can be mitigated by the good grad GPA. If you provide a kickass sample and get informative letters I think you would do fine. Contact the unis and see where you stand in terms of the GRE. Some universities apparently have a cut-off system. Good luck! -
Applying to PhD with a sub-3.0 undergraduate GPA
zudei replied to egunes's topic in Political Science Forum
Hi egunes, While I do not purport to be an admissions expert (seeing as it is my first cycle), let me try to answer your questions: First of all, does your home uni actually give numerical GPA's? If not, how did you convert it? If it isn't an official conversion, I wouldn't put much store by it. Your grad GPA is good on the other hand, and will do you a lot of good. Secondly, Your verbal and writing GRE scores are not that great, but all universities have different requirements. I would suggest that you check the websites or contact the grad schools themselves to find out if you are at a disadvantage. Sometimes it can be hard to get funding with low GRE scores. Finally, we need more information: what are your interests? If methodology, a low(er) V or AW score is less of a hurdle. How are your LOR's? What sort of a sample are you submitting? I know that I'm not giving you any concrete answers, but I'm afraid that there rarely are any. Your undergrad GPA (if applicable) and low GRE scores are a hurdle, but other aspects can bring your app up again. -
Indeed, we then just need the average prob of success
-
I'd calculate the binomial probability of getting into one school given you are applying to n: 1Cn p(1-p)n-1 "C" is the combination operator, and p is the probability of success (I am assuming it is the same for every school).
-
Amen to that. I will check this book out and request my French friends (very politely but persistently) to buy it and then invite me for dinner
-
Haha, it's useful when you have little money This is exactly how I proceeded as well. I treated it as a constrained optimization prob. Only applying to the places (unis or cities) that I would love + 2 backups (well still good schools but lower ranked than others).

I made a great Merguez curry last night: diced grilled merguez cooked in a curry of onions, green chillies, tomatoes, red chili powder, turmeric and ground coriander seeds. Quite (spicy) and tasty! I think sharing recipes is a great idea

Some polecon courses in Europe could be an alternative, but to be honest I'll probably just try and get a job. I'm kind of fed up of this whole not enough money to last the month thing. And these app fees are not helping at all...

I got the same impression...
