Finally got my notification from NYU...........ACCEPTED!!!! I'M GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL EVERYONE -
NEED HELP.. MUST MAKE A DECISION SOON!!!
moonchild1093 replied to ldspsych's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I live in Miami, and have travelled extensively in Boston and NYC, and I would say they're all great places to live. They all have their own cultural richness! I'm sure this doesn't help at all, though. lol. -
still waiting..... was told the decision would be made early this afternoon. it's approaching 7pm...........

Still waiting to hear back from my only option to go to grad school in the fall. Do people ever get accepted off the wait list after the April 15th deadline?

Thanks! My program said we should know by today but I guess there's no way they can be certain that people will respond...

Yes, hang in there! A friend of mine got accepted after the 15th last year off a waitlist.

Also stuck on the NYU wait list I declined my other offer due to poor fit, too, so this is my best and only option. -

Still on the wait list for NYU Sackler's Neuroscience program anybody thinking about declining their offer? Edit: I declined my offer from UMiami, hope someone benefitted from that! -

Thank you! Giving me hope. -
Thanks for the input, everyone. The thing is that this program is a little differently structured than most in terms of admissions. Only one of the PIs that I emailed was part of the admissions process. She interviewed me during my interview weekend. We really hit it off and connected during the interview. (We even hugged at the end of it!) The other PIs had no part of the admissions process at all; the adcom had no idea that I was in contact with them, other than that I had requested to meet with them during my visit, but they were unavailable. I think one of the reasons I was placed on the waitlist was because I wasn't able to meet with very many faculty members that shared my research interests during my visit, and thus, it could appear that I'm not the best "fit," although I certainly am. The faculty I requested were simply unavailable to meet with me. Two of the faculty I emailed are not "core" Neuroscience department faculty, are therefore not on the admissions committee, and almost certainly didn't discuss me with the adcom. Only one remaining PI had a small possibility of doing so. By emailing these PIs and asking them to write a short email to the adcom, I was hoping to provide more evidence of my fit in the program. I hope that I haven't, as you guys have suggested, hurt my chances by doing so.

Wait listed from my top choice Neuroscience PhD program. They said that the wait list is short, and in past years many people have been accepted off of it, but you can be sure that I'm not just going to leave it up to chance! What are some things I can do to boost my odds of acceptance? I have emailed some PIs from the institution, and asked if they'd feel comfortable sending a short email to the program director on my behalf. Good idea or bad? What else can I do? Should I have a professor from my home school send an additional mini-letter of recommendation?

I did almost exactly that. Well, I hope I get to see you there in the fall after all of this! Yeah, Joel Oppenheimer sent me an email. You should send an email if you haven't heard. -

That's what they told us at the interview. I'm pretty sure there's a second wave of decisions after that, as well, once people accept and reject offers. -

Does anybody know what happened with last year's NYU Neuro&Phys rejection massacre? People said that there were over 950 applicants for 35 spots, but do we know if there was a similarly low number of interview invitations? Were people rejected post-interview? Anybody still here from last year? -

Thanks! I interviewed early. When Sean Kennelley called and told me that I was invited for an interview, I asked if they could accommodate me before I left Miami to go back to school, so they didn't have to fly me back down. He put my itinerary together within a week. I interviewed with 6 faculty on the 17th, this past Friday. Sean called me back today with "good news"!! Fast turnaround time. He says a letter with my formal offer should be in the mail soon. Edit: He mentioned that the reason I heard back so early was because I interviewed early. Don't sweat it! -

Interview to UM! Sean called and asked me for different faculty to interview with, as mine aren't accepting grad students. But, they said they were very impressed with my application!! so happy. -

Hey NeuroGirl, I'm also hoping to receive an interview invitation from UMiami PIBS. How did you get an interview so early? When I called, they said they would be sendng them out "after the holidays," whatever the hell that means. PS: fistbump for Florida residents. I live in Miami, and know a ton of people in Tally, at UF, and at UM! Are you at FSU?
