  1. ohh i really like that story analogy! cute. im writing mine for a psyc program currently should you site potential supervisors work throughout like......i like social support and depression, so and so at your school had an interesting finding of this in their study. At first i thought this was a good idea, but i have 5 people im talking about and I don't know.....if i should just randomly site them in my interests and how my research experiences may reflect some of their work? like.....or should i just write in the end who i want to work with since my interests i state in my SOP already match up with them. But i guess siting their work shows that i read their research/ i was going to site where they put areas for future research in their articles....I'm just unsure about formatting of the SOP
  2. sooo what about after you've contacted them and are going fo ra meeting what are some dos and don'ts? I've read the profs work, i want to ask him about his current projects/ what people in his lab are doing and i have a few ideas that overlap with his reserach but I'm not sure what else to talk about.....or ask......
  3. what i did is talk about their work and how my ideas could contribute/ overlap with it. and relate what i've done (and how i have a strong gpa/ research experience) and how this would be beneficial to them how i can make experiences that may not seem so relevant off the bat (i have alot of research in health behaviors) and how this can apply to thier reserach/ what i want to do (moral cognition) that seems to get attention for me....my view is that profs are busy get right to the point as politely as possible. if they want your cv/ transcript theyll ask for it/ see it in your application. contact with a prof before hand is away to show your unique...ideas iguess that may not come across in as much detail in your SOP
  4. okkayy i am trying to decide some clinical psyc programs to apply to, does anyone know about the Msc at Acadia in clinical science? Or if the clinical psyc program at Victoria, Condoria, or OttawaU is a better choice to apply to then lets say Dalhousie, I would like to get in somewhere.....so I'm not looking for the very best program out there and I'm not sure where I stand application wise. But Dal would be nice, but I'm also applying to some research and cog sci programs so I don't want to just apply to every clinical program out there GRE scores are low, like 1100, Major GPA almost at an A+ (1 A), cumulative GPA almost at an A (different program 1st year that I did poorly in) I have relevant research experience at 2 hospitals, one where I am doing a project as part of my 4th year thesis project, also doing an independent study for a credit about health behaviors/ emotions along with some data entry work in a lab at my school i know research experience is important, I just don't know how important for clinical programs or for trumping lets say low gre scores....ishoudl be able to grab some decent LORs *crosses fingers* any advice/ thoughts/ anyone in clinical psyc i feel extremely lost.
  5. ahhh you got to the conclusion i'm sitll on the intro! i was going to go back to how i started it in the intro and mention the particulars of the school that make it special ex. that its small/ collaborative/ what makes it unique
  6. im doing it im in psyc its a great way to show your doing some independent research experience gives you something to talk about in your SOP
  7. i agree!! i wrote one to ubc then realized that i wasn't a good 'fit' or i just couldn't take one of my profs ripping it apart haha how do you start them? i was trying to think of a hook but.......couldn't think of anything.
  8. i don't think im going to address it in my SOP just highlight why id be really great to do research im going to pretend my gre doesn't exist because to me it is really a stupid indicator for graduate school like honestly answering opposites and highschool math in 1 min proves nothing in psyc
  9. i think 10 a cog sci phds, 3 clincal psycs phds, 1 phil msc and the rest research psyc phds
  10. thank you for replying! the gre has been the most stressful experience of my life! i never thought a test would have such an impact. i did take a Kaplan course, which did improve my mark, i got an 890 the 1st test i took. but honestly i've been studying since April and the verbal especially just seems like chance to me. I will contact that prof, i feel that the rest ofmy application is very strong and that really iduno how studying for the gre will make me a better graduate student. How badly did you score? did you retake it? are you applying for MA or phd programs?
  11. i am soooooooo sad. i just took that awful gre and scored the complete opposite of my practice, and worse actually 440 verbal, 580 math, what garbage is that! in my practice ones i wasn't scoring that well 590 verbal, 540 math.....but really. ughhh. I'm not from the States so standardized tests are very strange to me. I have been in contact with a prof at an ivey league school, our research interests overlap quite abit (i'd be applying for psychology). we are supposed to meet in person soon....but now i feel like a complete disappointment. I have been a research assistant at a two hospitals this past year and will continue to do research with one until I graduate and I've volunteered at a lab at my school. I went from a B- in first year when I was in another program to a mid A- overall GPA with my psyc gpa at a high A i mean 11.9/12 being an a+, finishing with 99 in a class last term and 97 in 3rd year stats. any advice? i really don't know if taking this test again will sky rocket my score, because i really thought the math section was going to be a bigger problem, i am so sad! ahhh i don't know what to do, it seems like every school needs them and i feel like i've killed my chances working with this prof whose work I really love, gre, what garbage!
