Fall 2014 applicants??
ArthChauc replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Does anybody have any idea what's going on with Colorado? I read the results board from last year and apparently some offers went out at the end of March. Just wondering. -
I have an issue about the April 15th deadline and was also looking for some advice about my situation. I have been accepted to University A with a $16k stipend and full medical, dental, and vision coverage. University A has one or two scholars that I really like and a few others who I know less about but are somewhat pertinent to my desired subfield. It is in an area close to where I live now for my master's degree (about an hour away) and it is in an urban area that has a low cost of living. Despite this great offer by University A, I am currently in love with University B at which I am waitlisted. I know that I am one of two people on the waitlist for our subfield but I am not sure who is first on the list and when I asked the DGS about it, he did not explicitly state which position I held but rather my likelihood of being admitted "seems quite hopeful" to him. This exchange took place via email a week ago (Christ, it feels like months ago) and I received my official waitlist letter today in the mail--this letter expressed that it was likely that I wouldn't hear back from them until after the April 15th deadline. My dilemma is as follows: University B is my dream school, but I would be okay with attending University A as it has great tenure track placement. University B provides a definite job for my fiancé and is in an area that I find more desirable. I am afraid, however, that I might wait on University B and lose my spot with University A due to the deadline. Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone have any advice? The waitlist letter I received provided two sets of contact information and one of those people was the POI I mentioned in my statement of purpose--would it be worth it to contact her to explain this issue? Or to get a second opinion about the waitlist process/funding opportunities (I know very little about what my funding would look like if I was accepted).

Deferring an Offer?
ArthChauc replied to Kamisha's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I have heard of programs allowing people to defer, but from my understanding it is rare (or at least conditional upon something) and typically for only a year. I think you would probably need to show the DGS (or whomever makes the decision) that there are viable grounds for deferment or show your rationale for deferring--I have a friend who asked to defer because she felt as though she needed a break before starting her Ph.D and the DGS basically told her it was now or never except in a nicer way. Another friend asked to defer because he needed to work another year before moving to an expensive city for his Ph.D and the DGS granted it on the grounds that he start during the winter semester. TL;DR: I think it depends. -
Accepting an offer without visiting
ArthChauc replied to semicolon2013's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I know this feel. I'm currently on a wait list and, if I'm going to be accepted, I won't be visiting before the deadline. I will be visiting my other acceptance, however, but I think from reading online and talking to DGS/faculty/current students/recent graduates, you can probably get a decent enough picture of the department. Also, Des--are you planning on waiting to hear from Syracuse or are you totally committed to Villanova at this point? -

Ugh, mine still shows as "Submitted and Paid" for UDub. Anyone else? BG, congrats! That's incredible! -
New Mexico applicants

I'm a Medievalist who is very tightly crossing her fingers. -
I live in BG now and live in a house on Main Street that's divided into apartments. Main is where's all the "cool" stuff is located--bars, coffee shops, a record store, etc--and there are a few housing options there like the old hotel and I believe an actual complex. Take a look at Greenbrier and Mecca listings, they're both renters in the area.

I'm waitlisted in general--congrats on your acceptance! Can I ask what your emphasis is in? -

Yay Des! MA, right? That's crazy exciting. By the way, I got my Purdue rejection and made a 2.5 hour to visit my father in the hospital. Woo! -
Looking for Insight on Wait Lists
ArthChauc replied to back2black's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
This post was super helpful--logically, I knew this was how waitlists work, but I think when you think about your own circumstances it's always a bit more fuzzy feeling. At least, that's how I feel. I'm waitlisted at my top school (New Mexico) and I'm one of two people on the waitlist for my speciality. I've been told by the DGS that it seems "quite hopeful" that I am eventually admitted. Still. Ugh. Life. -

I never got the whole Dunkin thing until I moved to my current location. It's the real deal. Also, I'm scared at the prospect of potentially moving to a state with no Tim Hortons. -

I adore Kate, Pro. You're just assuming that she and I aren't already best friends. Your mistake. Also, you're right, Des. It's so easy to freak out when you go from the very calm "nothing good is going to happen" defeatist perspective to "ZOMG what, you might want me?". It's rough. Despite feeling like hell all the time I was telling myself "you're going to come up empty", it at least made me feel oddly secure haha. Also, since this school is my top choice...I'm just floored. And terrified. I'm going to binge eat popcorn so soon. -

I'm having the same semantical trauma as Des re: wait listed (or, in her case, getting funding). His wondering to me about getting acceptance was that it seems "quite hopeful to me". DOES THAT MEAN I WILL GET IN OR SHOULD I JUST CRY NOW AND SAVE MYSELF THE EFFORT LATER. But seriously. Can't this process just be over? -
Fall 2014 applicants??

I'm with shortstack--definitely good protocol. I'm in an awkward position where I tentatively scheduled a visit with a school that accepted me but am waitlisted at my first choice. The visit would be the first week of April (due to scheduling conflicts) but if I'm accepted to the waitlisted school (hopefully before or right around April) I know that I want to go there hands-down. I don't know whether to go ahead and schedule the visit (I'm driving so all it would be is booking a hotel) or wait and visit after April 15 if it becomes my only acceptance. Ahhh! -

Thank you! I'll let you know how it is when I get back. Apparently I'm seeing it like...a week before the LA premiere. Pretty awesome. -
