This comment just makes me laugh as I was not writing this question to have someone correct my grammar. This is not a sample of my work. I don't know who you are or what kind of education you have but any normal person should have figured that much! I don't need anyone to tell me how to write emails or short paragraphs that ask for advice. If you cannot provide advice about my question, then just don't reply. Lol let me guess you will attempt to analyze these sentences as well. Guess what? Of course I do not edit my writing here!

Just saw your post and gonna return the favor and reply. I went to Rutgers to a different department but I have had some communication with the Linguistic department as well, as I have reached out to them to observe several classes and find out more about their program.
It is theoretical, so if that's what you are looking for- that's great!
As far as classes: You will have to take classes that you are probably not interested in- at least for the 1st - 2 years. Any PhD program in the U.S will make you take at least some general coursework, because they want you to have a broad range of knowledge in the subject as a whole. You can probably research all of this on the Linguistics site at Rutgers, but you will be required to take your standard, Syntax, Semantics, Phonology etc.. courses. If you have an M.A they might let you transfer some credits, but probably not more than 12 or 15 credits max.

As far as research and getting help from Professors:
This is generally applied to all U.S programs. Faculty are there to help you but you have to seek out the help. They will not treat you as an undergrad. and follow up with you all the time. You have to do the work, to reach out to them etc. An MA/PhD in the U.S is about you being extremely independent and well organized and the faculty are there in the background to help you if you seek it. I would definitely compare it to a sink or swim approach. Not to scare you- but that is just how it is!

    Teaching:
It is almost guaranteed that you will NOT teach the classes that you want. I would say whatever humanities PHD it is, the 1st year- you get to teach very elementary courses and then advance on. Seniority is also in place so Grad. students who are further in the program get better priority of interesting classes to teach.
    Hope this helps.
P.S most of the above information is from my experience at Rutgers but NOT directly in the Linguistic department.
As far as my experience with them, their advisor seems very open minded and helpful and their grad classes are small and diverse.

Yes while it is very good that PhD's there are shorter I think there are many pro's and con's that need to be considered. As far as Master's go, I actually just contacted Oxford and they said that one would have to tale a MSC or basically a 1 or 2 yr master's if you do not have a thesis style paper (10,000 words or more) becaus etheir PhD requires you to submit a PhD style proposal, so for  us this is what we do in a regular US Phd in year 3, 4.

I will gladly reply since I think I can add something to your dilemma. I as well was kind of in the same boat. I would suggest for you to apply broadly to both MA and PhD programs, probably more MA's than PhD's. What you have to realize is that many Phd programs, the good ones accept stellar graduates and this often means MA graduates with more experience research etc. Of course they do take students after BA's but often those students are the best of the best (in their undergrad) schools. And also you should think about what you think would be more beneficial to you. Going first to an MA, strengthening your skills, writing etc. Or going straight into a PhD- it will be hard, but if you are willing to work really hard, and accept that probably at first you will be at a somewhat disadvantage then by all means do it!
I did it and at times I think an MA would have benefited me in a different way, but I have grown and gained much strength from my experience as a Ma/PhD student.
    Hope this helps

yeah..i think you're right about the C thing. Humanities departments basically rarely give C's. so B=C makes sense.
I am tried to inquire as to what exactly I should have done better, since I am not really sure. Some of the professors in my program are very forthcoming while others just say it's not good and that's it.

I am a first year grad student, and have voiced some of my concerns here already. So as one student to another. Be prepared to do WAY more work! And in much more detail. And for me personally, undergrad. school was pretty easy, but in grad. school I did have to result to outside help, such as tutors etc..so be ready for that. Also if your program is MA/PHD, you will most likely have classes with PhD students who probably know WAY more than you. Just accept this fact and learn from it. Finally as I was advised, if you do not get perfect scores, talk to the professors because you wanna know what you are doing wrong. I don't know how it will be for your major, but for mine our grade is pretty much just based on a final paper, so everything depends on that.

First of all so glad you are in Ukraine (my half home)! and are interested in Slavic studies.
I am in a foreign language Ma/ phd in a different language and just wanted to give some advice.

I have been told by many people that comp. lit programs are extremely competitive and if you want to teach language or culture in Russian or whatever other language it is advisable to get a Phd in it as Comp. lit is very broad.

especially if it is not your first language!

Enjoy Ukraine! What city are you in?

    Hi!
I actually went there for a visit so can provide some info.

It is a relatively small town and is rural. I am not sure where you're from but for me it was quiet a shock. The campus is very nice big and has many amenities. But I would say that outside of the campus life there is not much. I found my department to  be very good. As far as the town goes there are some really good areas and some bad ones.

If you have any specific questions just ask...As I said I just went there for a visit but maybe I can help you out.
