  1. Hey i know how to make "rakia" the bulgarian version of moonshine, so HA. perfect now i know what i will do when i graduate. Thank you all for explaining the rosy situation to me! I feel so optimistic already Ajtz'ihb , you mentioned that there are other positions one can hold that would potentially allow them to do research/ fieldwork that are not academic. Can you elaborate on that a bit more? Like what?
  2. CONGRATS!! YAYYYY YAYYYYYYYYYY - So well deserved and soooo expected!!! HAppy for you with all my heart!
  3. ohhh super! and i want to say that what aaaaaanthroling says makes alot of sense. After all, you choose the topics- inevitably you will have some similarities - at least theoretically you might align. For example, my MA had absolutely nothing to do with my current- would be doctoral research in terms of area. But, theoretically i am still considering things such as social complexity, urbanization....
  4. HHAHA faulty i swear, i did not know it was you until they mentioned you below. Guys, dont change pics! cant follow Hey there. the incoming cohort is 8 people from what I understand, and the interview was for 12 people. PM me if you would like more info.
  5. Thank you! so, a post-doc helps a lot? May i ask how or more so why that helps in the job market?
  6. oh god, i would have died. I think you win, just for the fact that you were able to hold your composure. I think this may have been like what they do at google? Ask you questions that you dont really have to answer correctly, but just to see how you think. In this case, just to see how you respond and handle yourself? Please keep us posted, i have been following your posts since last year. I am sending you allllll the best vibes i can muster.
  7. wow....super. I feell soooo encouraged right now. But, you know...i love this field of archaeology so much, that i am willing to take a huge chance. Thank you for putting it into perspective for me. I would love to hear from graduate students near completion right now... what are your plans right now? for the future? what other things are you looking into other than jobs in academia?
  8. perfect....great. what is a NGO? Sorry if it is a stupid q...i am not good with abbreviations. So, i was just thinking about making a post like this:up until now, i was always worried about getting IN a phd program, but never about 6 years later. Can you guys explain to me...why is it so hard to find a job in academia??? After all there are hundreds and hundreds of colleges/ universities. Cant we get in as assistant professors, before a tenure? cant we get teaching positions? Why is it so much more challenging than other jobs ?
  9. I am sure that the topic wont be a deal breaker, now that a year has passed and i have spoken to professors . No one can expect you to have your MA in line with something you will do in the future. If its in anthropology, and it shows how you can think and use theory, its enough, i think. I would love to hear what others have to say on the topic
  10. thank you all so much! I am so exited at the thought that we will be colleges even from other schools!
  11. hey i just saw this ! Thank you for all of your comments, new and old. Following these tips, i got my first acceptance yesterday!
  12. The wait is almost worse then rejections ( now i say this and I will eat my words, but...) . Has anyone else applied to Univ. of Pittsburgh? Any info about them? Other then the interview last month, i have heard nothing from anyone else....its so depressing
  13. thats....a major F-up ....may i say. I am so sorry. Now, think if they were like..."sorry...you were actually rejected...." ...Hahha?
  14. Hey! My firends are also avoiding hanging out with me from fear that i will talk about gradschool and how sad i WILL be or what i WILL do if i get in....This site has not censored me unfortunately. But , it does feel really good to have an outlet like this, so welcome. And, I always say this, you already have one acceptance , so everything else is like a + ,not a necessity. It takes ONE , and you have it- my deepest congratulations (and jealousy )
  15. HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY CONGRATSSSSSSSSSSss WOOO HOOOO!!! Iam celebrating with you. Let us know how it goes and write all the dirty little details in that interview topic! cant wait to hear more from you guys! i am crossing all types of fingers for you two!
  16. I do! I mean...if this is what you are truly passionate about doing, if your hearth is in it, and you are willing to take the risk , you should. But, this is generally like any other job- there is competition! you have to build yourself UP in order to step through the door somewhere. It might be heard, but you must know if it is worth it for you
  17. congratulations!!! Wow! so much good news, i hope some flies around me also
  18. I am really sorry for your rejection. Last year, when i received my first one (and all of them were rejections) , my heart literally skipped a bit. I lost all hope from that point on. But, Arizona State is like the MOST competitive school. You can have EVERYTHING but because there are so many people applying, the chance is so small. Last year, i think they had like 200 applicants! You have applied to many programs, i am crossing my fingers for your and am sure you will get in at least one ! keep your head up!
  19. from the bottom of my heart , congratulations to all of you guys
  20. congratulations!!! I am soooo happy for you!!! no i really think you are in. and it is a formality. What they have to make sure is that you have met all the Grad School reqs. so like...do your GRES GPA ect ect meet the minimum . Thats what i think it is. Thats why they need those official transcripts and GRE right? CONGRATULATIONS!!! WOOO HOOOO . I can feel in my hearth the happiness you must be feeling right now.
  21. Hello there. I had guidelines, like a week before i was asked to do it. Very detailed too. The whole point was to present my topic in a way that appealed to the audience in an anthropological way, not just my topic/ area specific. How my study connected to the field as a whole. Why is it important?
  22. Hey! NO i ,realllyyyyy dont think they are going to ask you to formally present something in a Power Point format without giving you a guideline first . Maybe they will there , but i don't think they can do that. let say you did not take your computer- what then? Having said that, I think you should be prepared to give a concise summery of what you are going to do, why , and why it is important. like...think of it as your interview question #1. Its one think to go onnn and onnn in writing, but verbalizing it is a different skill. Please keep us posted! I cant wait to hear your good news.
  23. Looking at the results page, SO much good news- interviews and acceptances in the same place! Congratulations to all of you! Is anyone also applying to Univ. of Pitts.? Any news from there?
  24. No problem. once people have been interviewed, does the committee go back and look at GPA / GRE and those things when they are trying to decide between a couple of people?
