Cotsen Institute of Archaeology- UCLA applicants
Daisy123 replied to Daisy123's topic in Anthropology Forum
I find myself in a most similar situation as you, as i cannot decide whether to buy plain tickets or not to. So is anyone else planning on calling/ emailing to see what is going on with their application? i think i have maxed out my turns -
hahah its WAS simply put, thank you. Is it because i risk "annoying" my way out of the wait list?

hello there! I am involved in bioarchaeology, but from what i understand UC las Vegas is very good for this area of yours. Also, i saw that Ohio State University has many with diverse areas, and i will also be applying there. Arizona State university also has a strong forensic program...these are the programs that come to my mind at the moment. What have you applied to so far, and what exactly are you interested in ? I hope you get in your heart's desire

I am considering contacting by POI while waitlisted- i have had conversations with the Grad director but not with my POI for months now. I want to email her and tell her again how much i want to go there , but i dont really know what and how to say it- i cant just be like "heyy...i hope you have been well- so i reallyyyyy want to work with you, i just wanted to tell you again" ... How have you guys approached this situation or WOULD you initiate contact at this point? What would you say.

Second Time Around...what did you do differently?
Daisy123 replied to gradcat's topic in Anthropology Forum
Thank you so much for starting this post gradcat. I have NOT been accepted anywhere this , my first time, but i just wanted to chime in and tell what I will be doing differently next year. - I will not retake my poor GREs because i am fairly confident that iwill get the same score - i will make that statement in my SOP where we talk about why we want to work with certain faculty, much more personal. - i will do more field work this summer, - i will do everything in my power to submit or present at a conference (something i am lacking and seems to not be working in my favor) - I will visit schools and at least talk to my POIs more -

i think you guys should ask...plus i think its good news that we have not heard anything ! , I know exactly what you mean with planning - i need to buy a ticket for BG this summer and i cant do so because i do not know if i will be registering for classes! but if i wait until next month, i probably wont be able to go cuz space fills up FAST -

very cool! and where are your papers going to be accepted- at a presentation? Thats something i have not been able to do, and i would have trouble doing it since i am not affiliated with any institution at the moment- however i a have heard that conferences "call for papers" is one way to go d -

good plan you still have a few schools to hear from so that really good! UCLA is the last for me, i have been rejected from everywhere else. Will you be reapplying next year if things dont work out for you this year? -

another thing that has been eating at me is- if the people who are accepted have already accepted their offers and there are no spaces on the waitlist, then should we not hear about it immediately??? Is this a fool's hope or what? -

Hello everyone! how are you holding up? I just wanted to check in and see if you have any news or have contacted the department? I did call and ask if i am still on the wait-list and i have survived the second "cuts" but .....we will stilll have to wait. I was wondering for those on there that ARE on the wait-list- if you do attend another institution - do you take yourself OFF the waitlist...how does that work? -
Recomendation for Bioarchaeology programs/ POI?
Daisy123 replied to Daisy123's topic in Anthropology Forum
thank you all very much! i will do my homework then! The biggest problem for me seems to be finding people that will work outside of their geographical area with me. -

thank you so much! i will check him out -
congratulations!!! its so late in the season and such positive news! What is your area ?
-
So, i have decided a new tactic next application cycle- i am not going to be looking for faculty that works in the Near East ANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD has bioarchaeological expertise...i will be looking for faculty that is specialized in bioarchaeology and is willing to advise a student on any region of the world. Can any of you who have applied, are applying or will be applying to these bioarchaeology departments recommend some for me- i have met a few of you on here, and i am once again reaching out to your valuable opinion. THank you all so much i appreciate every single word

Hi.! i have no news either! I am not sure if that means it is good or bad...but i am hoping that it is just a super cool coincidence that ALL OF US ON HERE have not been notified with bad news -
I hope you get a GOOD news tomorrow! Fingers and toes crossed! congratulations!!! will you be attending ? I want to apply next year to this university- the program sounds amazing!! I am still waiting to hear on our UCLA wait list....i know they met last week to cut some people off the list. now, the question is if the ones that were cut are already notified or is this good news still?

GRE troubles for Anthropology 2014 Applicants
Daisy123 replied to Daisy123's topic in Anthropology Forum
OMG Hahah i graduated in 2005! what about him!? Thank you so much for your valuable advice. I will look into this right away . Can i pm you about this topic? i will also start a tread a little later on this topic and you can chime in there because i am sure there are others in the same situation that can benefit from your experience. So are you going to apply next year again? I actually had the same problem as you- i wanted to do bioarchaeology too and found Ohio State University just last week- thats one program i SHOULD have applied for because of the reasons you mentioned above. Also, check out east carolina univesrity - i just spoke to Dr. Perry, a bioarchaeologist from whom i SPECIFICALLY wanted to know if she would work with students outside her area. She said that she is currently advising a girl on CA project and she works in Palestine so that does not matter to her. Maybe you should talk to her too and tell her your specific bio archaeological interests. http://www.ecu.edu/cs-cas/anth/Department-of-Anthropology-Faculty.cfm -

we are neighbors!!! i went to cupertino high school s OHHH goddddd!! THats soooo depressing!! did you ask any of your schools why is it that they rejected you? Its all so......uncertain! By the way, how did you get involved in a SAA and AAA to do conferences? I have an MA too but i had no opportunities to publish or do research in my grad. school...so...now i will have to figure something out. -

I will apply to work with Dr. Kujit ( he is an expert in the Near East) . I heard about both of your POI - they are known in their field right? I am in the same boat as you with the GRE's but i dont have public conferences presentations, or ANYTHING like that under my belt. What i do have is 4-5 years of filed school and t research (but that research is in CA archaeology). So....this is my situation and idont really know what i can do next year to make it better. This PhD was my escape from my living situation here, and i understand what you mean about your kids- i have a 3 year old and shes the one getting the most affected by this whole thing -

yes, i meant UNLV, sorry! OH well that sucks for me...i guess i better go and visit them than. i think i am hearing this advice from a 1000 people it must have some validity. I also want to apply to the notra dame university as there is an POIthere with exactly the same interests as me and we already spoke. So for UNLV, how did you know they placed alot of value on it? what was their cut off? It really sucks that thats the one you want to attend but its a masters ....could you not do the MA and hten go on to a PhD there? -

i did not get accepted anywhere....my only prospect is being wait listed at the Cotsen institute at UCLA but realistically, i dont even think anyone will reject their offers. so congratulations to you! i hope you are going to go to a program that will make you really happy. Next year, i am planning to apply to UNLA , and i wanted to ask you if thats the school that cared about the GREs?
