I'm just a bad Europeanist. I only have 1 additional (German) to my English.

@missmend As far as popularity goes, I think it depends on how you spin it as far as Russia/Eastern Europe. There is still a lot of interesting work being done in that area. I understand the debt thing too.

I think medievalist is a synonym for nerd...
-
I know exactly how you feel! I'm ready to put this job behind me and move on to bigger and better things.
-
Congrats Telkanuru!

One thing to consider @missmend, if you get into a PhD program you should not go into debt. Avoid taking loans for your education at all costs.
-
I just want it to start. I have four months to go before I begin the moving process and I just. can't. wait. Ready for the next step to begin.

I hadn't considered the need for paleography for Modern Germany until I started looking at some of the old German handwriting which is radically different from the stuff after the 1950s.

Hey all. This is great! I second Ashiepoo's statement above. I'm happy to help with narrowing things down or acting as a sounding board after just going through the process. Good luck everyone!

Those all sound like great options Fianna! I honestly wouldn't know where to start and would trust your superior skills in that arena. As far as a grad union is concerned, it's one of the things I'm most excited about at Iowa. They've been VERY effective in getting concessions for graduate students, including most recently a fee reduction as part of the contract.
-
That sounds fascinating Fianna. I've considered looking at Germans in the Middle East in the nineteenth century, in which case I'll need either Arabic or Ottoman Turkish.

Thanks everyone! I definitely want to keep in touch with everyone (as time allows of course) and find out how all of your programs are working out. Also, I'm sure commiseration will be necessary from time to time.

Hello all. I've accepted at admission to the University of Iowa for the fall of 2015. Anyone else moving to Iowa City?
-
I've decided to attend the University of Iowa in the fall. My application season is completed and I couldn't be more excited.

Lessons Learned: Application Season Debriefings

That face to face contact sounds like a key to your acceptances, JayRay. It may be a good suggestion for those going down this road to find an opportunity, before application season, to meet with professors if possible face to face. That personal touch may mean all the difference (assuming nothing else rules you out) -
That's an excellent recommendation Sigaba. Having those resources accessible is very important. That's partly weighing my decision (which I still haven't made).

Hello! I've been accepted by Binghamton as well for history. I haven't made my final decision yet, but it's definitely high on my list.
-
I'd reach out to Penn State JJWS. You may be on the waitlist. When I emailed the DGS, that's what they told me. Good luck!

Decisions are hard!

Hello RiffRam! Thanks for replying to the thread and thank you for all the information. I'll be visiting Iowa City this week (Wednesday evening late, through Sunday midday). What type of things should I check out while I'm in town? Are there areas to look for houses/rentals? We are thinking of potentially buying a house as we'll be here a good 5 years or so.

I wish I had the available PTO from work to visit all my schools. I'm only able to visit 2, with a small possibility I'll visit a third (if I have to). My choice is really between 2 programs at this point that I think are remarkably similar in many ways as far as funding, outcomes, etc. THIS IS HARD!

I thought I made a decision but certain complications have arisen. Additionally, as I'm moving with my partner, my choice needs to have something for her career path as well. That definitely increases the challenge.
