  1. I was getting excited to hear my scores then I ran into the $12 hear-scores-by-phone fee. I paid $150 for the test now I have to pay $12 to hear my scores?? I will wait to see them online or via mail, assuming that those services won't cost anything.
  2. I was surprised by how quickly the time went by. I left way question more unanswered than I wanted - didn't have time to get to them. I did the Princeton Review method and did a first sweep, answering all the easy questions. My Second Sweep spending a little more time on questions I had to figure out or had a good idea for a guess. My Third Sweep left my stuck and I probably left 30 questions unanswered. Oops. Though I hear it's common to not finish the exam. Thoughts?
  3. At least you finished the princeton review practice test. I am only on question 100 and I have been slowly working on it here and there throughout the week. So in addition to the overwhelming amount of info on the test I will be unprepared for working with the time limit/under pressure. Tonight I am just going to cram a bunch of literary terms and relisten to some of the "essential" poems that are guaranteed to be on there. A good study tip: The YouTube channel SpokenVerse has really REALLY good readings of some of the poems the Princeton Review book recommends reading. Check out the channel. It will help with becoming more familiar with the poems.
  4. SAT essays don't need to be factual, only well written and cogent. If a student claims Gumbee was the first man on the moon, but uses that fact in a well written and well reasoned essay, he/she cannot be docked for misinformation. When I taught my SAT class, that was one piece of info the kids loved to hear. Although it usually goes that students who make egregious factual errors will also write crap essays. Factual accuracy is a must in SoP as the readers will most likely be experts in the field.
  5. So I was 100% sure that I waived my rights to see my LOR for my WUSTL application, but last night I went to my application on their website to see if the status was updated and there they were! I clicked on the button that said "attached documents" and then there was a list of the names of my letter writes and a button next to their names that said " view". I thought maybe it would simply tell me if they receieved the letter, but when I clicked on it the entire letter opened up for me to read. I admit, I read it. The temptation was too much! Then I read another one...then I felt guilty. Has this happened to anyone else? Check your WUSTL app!
  6. http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/humanities-and-inhumanities?page=0,4 A cause for both dread and hope for those of us wanting to enter the humanities: Dread for how the system now works and hope for how it should and might work one day (hopefully by the time we - if we survive this season of waiting and get into a phd program - graduate).
  7. I haven't heard peep from Emory...don't even know if I'm waitlisted.
  8. I know as an undergrad the French dept is very rigorous. I don't know what other universities do, but at Cal all lower division classes are taught in French with absolutely no English allowed...it's the sink or swim method. A lot of students sink (drop the class or don't continue past French 1A) and a few climb the ladder to the upper division classes. The dept does have a reputation for being demanding. The GSIs that taught my lower division classes were sometimes very on edge. I surmised it was because of their workload plus the responsibility of teaching their classes. But for the most part I had a positive impression of them (a few, however, were notoriously difficult to work with). As far as the profs go, they are all top notch. All of us undergrads adored them all. They're a great group of people. What is your focus? Also, the French and Comp Lit are kind of joined at the hip...they share the same floor of offices and coordinate very well together. Sometimes the departments would put together potlucks or other get-togethers for the students....a very friendly and welcoming place.
  9. according to the results page, there has been one admittance via phone. I don't know if this means ALL offers have been made to the select few or that one person just received a special phone call from their POI.
  10. I saw on the results page that someone was invited to Vandy's interview weekends...wonder if that mean my app didn't make the cut. The reason I applied to Vandy's French dept is because they actually contacted me and sort of sold me on the program...now it looks like they don't want me. Disappointing. I too am a native English speaker with only two years of French under my belt. I did my undergrad at Berkeley and their French program is very intense. By my last semester I was taking upper division literature classes and did well in them.
  11. it's hard to anticipate when schools will be responding. I think we are all wondering the same thing. I expect a long wait for JHU and PENN becuase of the snow storm ravishing the east coast.
  12. I applied to the JHU Humanities, Comparative Literature program. I felt like it was a good fit for me and would love to get in but I anticipate a rejection. I get an elitist, highly selective vibe from them (don't know why...) Also, Baltimore is buried in snow right now so the decisions will probably be delayed
  13. I too have heard nothing from NYU. My guess is they are a step or two behind in the process.
  14. That is what I was afraid of....just looking for any glimmer of hope.... really want/need/hoping/praying for a funded offer
  15. just curious... has anyone ever been admitted to a school that didn't invite you to an interview? thinking about my lack of an Emory invite.
  16. based on your signature it looks like maybe you are the berkeley acceptance??
  17. who am I kidding? I would go to an ivy in a heartbeat if they would have me....
  18. I am Bay Area born and bred so if you end up going to UCB feel free to contact me for any reason. Karl Britto is a great professor and a very nice man. I took one class with him and saw him in office hours a few times... a stand out guy. Good luck with everything.
  19. and it is comforting for those of us with mediocre GRE scores
  20. Congrats on the UCB acceptance. I got my BA there...I love the campus (I proposed to my wife in front of the campanile), the city and the program. Which professors will you be working with? I applied there as well but unfortunately they have a reputation of not accetping their undergrads into their grad programs.
  21. I've applied to NYU as well (Is this the most competitive program?), and UPenn, Stanford, UC Berkeley (where I did my BA), Indiana University, Emory, Johns Hopkins, UConn and I applied to the English programs at Notre Dame, and WashU and French at Vanderbilt. Where did everyone do their undergrad? I am interested in the history of Biblical interpretation and its effect on contemporaneous philosophy and fiction.
  22. I applied to mostly all comp lit programs but I did apply to the French Program at Vanderbilt. The comp lit program at Vandy is not accepting for Fall 2010 but their English and other language programs boast an interdisciplinary approach. The French program and faculy lined up better with my interests than did the English program. The possibility of studying French in the south strikes me as very odd for some reason.

  24. My Vanderbilt French app was free of a fee
