My research mentor called the director and the director emailed the lecturer, asking him to consider adjustments. The director called what the instructor has done as unreasonable and said the faculty should not hinder students' success. Don't know if this will irritate the instructor and exacerbate the tense...

That sounds like good news to me. At least you are not on your own now. You got some higher but reasonable professors trying to help you. And you got us.

    Best of luck.
I know at my university, that's all it ever takes and problems are usually resolved. I hope they are for you as well.

Now, I don't know your institution, but I would go to the CS department chair or Academic Dean and be like "Man, you guys are supposed to be giving me a future, not screwing it up". Maybe in slightly better terms than that, but yeah.

woah woah woah, there was nothing racist in that.
The full post was "I'm American. I'll take any advantage I can get even if it is unfair. This process is cut throat." And when I realized that it was not the most sensitive thing to say, I edited it out. I apologize, but "American" is not a race. We are a melting pot. And it is not me who is doing this biasing.
It is not up to me if there is an american bias at american funded schools or not. I did say that it was unfair.

Umm it was a little more than 75% last year (my cycle), and we're planning on the same this year. My PI is actually on the ad-com this year, and she said literally all they look for if you've been called up for the interview is a) you are the same science-passionate student you seem on paper, and b) you aren't an arrogant douchebag.
    All the best

While I hope MIT is not finished yet, I doubt I'll be getting an interview... I was too exhausted to properly change my SoP to fit their "proposal for graduate studies" prompt.

If you've never worn makeup in your life, I would probably just skip it. You want to feel comfortable during the interview, and in my experience, if you wear light makeup, most guys won't really notice the difference. If you want to make a bit more effort, I'd recommend tinted chapstick since it feels just like regular chapstick, but gives you some natural color.

I don't think you need to wear makeup - I did and will, but it's something I do on a regular basis (like, when I see participants I put on mascara lol). I somewhat "toned it up" for interviews (I'm talking like, tinted moisturizer, mascara, and eyeliner, MAYBE some lightly tinted lip balm or something - it was not a lot). I don't think interviews are a great time to try makeup for the first time. If you want to you can maybe practice a bit beforehand, but I'd just say do what makes you feel comfortable! IIRC, no one had crazy noticeable makeup and if they did I don't think it would've stood out in a good way...
