I see that we have one person who got into this program. Congrats! When is the Admitted Students' Day/Weekend? Were you able to find out about the cohort size that they are shooting for? I'm currently on the wait list. Any info that you're willing to share would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, that is quite late. I've been accepted by MAPSS (referred by the soc department) and waitlisted by another department at the school. Now I am wondering if I should visit both programs during MAPSS admitted students' days. Do you think professors will be willing to meet with a waitlisted student? I just don't want to get accepted on, say, April 13 and then have to turn down the offer because I won't get to visit.

A new result has been posted - a rejection via e-mail. Was it a mass e-mail? Thanks!
-
I'm in as well. Anyone here going to the admit weekend?
-
I already sent my WL school an e-mail expressing my continuing interest in the program and politely asked about my ranking on the waitlist. I will probably follow up in April.

Thank you again for your previous detailed post about Columbia. I've received official rejections from three schools so far. At each school, there are a few professors whose interests match some of mine; none matches exactly. Plus, each school specializes in only one of my stated interest areas. On the other hand, at the school where I'm waitlisted at the situation is different. A number of other schools on my list have already sent out acceptances. So I think I'm pretty much down to the last 3-4, two of which are lower in rank but not necessarily easier to get into (though I think they are good fits). It's a little hard to keep myself optimistic at this point ... sigh. But thanks anyway.

Interesting: people are starting to post their acceptances.

I've found few results posted by past Comparative Human Development applicants. Does anyone know whether the adcomm is close to revealing their decisions? Thanks.

Enjoy your visit. Do let us know how things go. Will you have a chance to check out Bloomington? It's supposedly a college town so there should be plenty of things to distract you from school work.

Congrats to those who got accepted! Does Indiana have an admit weekend coming up? By the way, I heard today that I got waitlisted.
-
I also applied to Duke and have not heard back from them. Try to let it go for now ...

You're probably still in the running then. It probably wouldn't hurt to confirm your status with the department though. I would be interested in hearing about people's visits to Chicago in March.
-
Depending on when the admit weekend occurs. If it's in early March, then I'd say that we probably are in the "rejected" pool. When is the "prospective student" weekend?

I think that your questions were appropriate. For suggestions on what to ask professors and current students when you visit schools, go to this website: http://members.terracom.net/~dorothea/gradsch/success.html (Scroll down the page) Partially from this website (created by a well-meaning but jaded former graduate student in a different department at Wisconsin), I got the general sense that Wisconsin is big and impersonal, rather than intimate and cohesive. Of course, that's not to say that you can't find good advisors there. I personally would pick UNC over Wisconsin based on the factors that you cited earlier. Of course, your selection will also depend on fit and accessibility to suitable advisors. Good luck!

Ha, I guess I'm out then. Congrats.

Hello, fellow applicants. According to the results board, it's almost that time. No news yet on my end. I e-mailed a couple of professors at Chicago prior to the application deadline to express my interest in the program. Most of them e-mailed me back and sounded encouraging. Has anyone else spoken to any faculty member and/or staff at Chicago recently? I wonder whether the adcom is close to making offers. So far I've received dings from two schools that are lower on my wishlist (i.e. less of a fit). I managed to get over the news fairly quickly but am now getting more apprehensive about my application at my first-choice school. Good luck, everyone! Hope we all get good news soon!

Terrific news!! It looks like the day is almost over in New Jersey. Oh well ...

What they care about/What the situation is like this year

Hi, congratulations and thank you so much for sharing! I have a 4.0 in sociology but an overall GPA very similar to yours so I've been very concerned about my chances. -
Yes, congratulations to all recent admits! No good news from my end, just my first reject from Stanford. I checked my e-mail account after seeing the rejects posted here so thanks so much for the warning! Stanford wasn't one of my top choices so the news is, uh, bearable. I received many different advice regarding factors that influence admissions (e.g. fit with individual professors, fit with departmental specializations, faculty contact). I think it's going to be interesting to see which advice applies in my case. I did e-mail a few Stanford professors prior to my application. Obviously it didn't help much. Added: Wow, I see some Princeton admits! Somehow I wish that I could sit down with every one of you and have a chat about our perspective journeys.

I guess I'm out too. Hopefully better luck next week!

I hear ya. I haven't heard from any school either. Try to keep yourself busy. That's what I've been doing, and January just flew by for me.
-
Can you ask them to find you a student host to stay with during the weekend? That way you will save on hotel costs.
-
Fantastic news all around! Thanks for the reminder about checking/resetting my SPAM folder. Usually my SPAM messages are deleted automatically. So hopefully I haven't missed any acceptances because of this! Do grad schools usually offer to pay for travels to admit weekends? Only some, I would imagine.

Wow, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Fantastic news! I guess they're notifying people early this year. Any news on funding?

Did anyone make a fool of themselves talking to future advisor?

I disagree. By mentioning it, you will draw attention to it. Just let it go, and sound confident and enthusiastic in your follow-up e-mail to her. Good luck!
