  1. Results are in. I was notified by our grant point person that everyone from my institution won. Email just came in. Good luck to everyone.
  2. Hi all, I'm also waiting with baited breath to hear from the Fulbright-Hays in order to start my research in Japan. First, let me share some good news. Although it was the IIE rather than the DDRA, I have two colleagues who were just awarded Fulbrights to Japan. I know these orgs (IIE and DDRA) are difference, but hopefully they are using similar logic. Of course, we are still dealing with restricted entry to Japan, but I know some researchers who are entering (Mext and one Fulbrighter). So, there is some hope. Best regards.
  3. Ha! I feel you on that. Although, I am trying to get as much writing done as I can before the potentially bad news arrives!
  4. Nothing here...I'm guessing Friday at this point? Or even the following Monday?
  5. Congratulations! I also got a transcript request and "finalist status." I assume everyone who gets the request has that status? The evaluation steps are listed on the IDRF website faq.
  6. Congratulations, MtrlHstryGrl!
  7. I'm sorry to hear that, Kochan. Best of luck with the Japan Foundation! Sounds likely you will get it.
  8. Sadly, I got my rejection letter from Fulbright iie (research) today. I was a bit surprised as I put together a stronger application this year and was an alternate for Fulbright and SSRC IDRF last year. Bummed. And, it came fast.
  9. I had a transcript request some time ago, but after looking through some old threads that this means less than, say, becoming a Fulbright semifinalist. Mostly posting here to spur activity. So, anyone heard anything?
  10. First acceptance this year: Chicago! Congratulations to all the other admits and wishing acceptance for everyone else at good programs!
  11. Just thought I would chime in and express my anxiety here. I got my first rejection (Northwestern). I had an interview, but the fit was not quite there. Still, got a nice followup email from the POI stating that there were no early modernists accepted in my sub-field this year. I cast a fairly wide net, but all the programs are competitive. At this point, I just want my current school to offer me admission and funding for the MA to PhD track so I can stop stressing. Even that is not guaranteed, so I have been checking email compulsively for a week now. It's quite distracting and eats into my time I should be spending on my research and translations. Sigh. Everyone here has been a big help in terms of application preparation and sharing a sense of camaraderie. Thanks for that! I wish the best of luck to you all as we wait for the good news.
  12. Off the top of my head: UCB, UCLA, USC. There are others, but I am not sure about modern, so I left them out. You can also check rankings of schools and then see what they offer on their dept sites. Best of luck!
  13. Hi DCGuy and all you Historians. Congratulations on your acceptances. For those of you who didn't make it in: don't give up! I was finally able to make the jump from Asian Studies to History (third times the charm?). Very happy to be heading to UO for a MA with a Graduate teaching fellowship. Not much changed in my application, aside from making my SOP intro more personal and less academic. I was also able to get more applications out (12) thanks to some financial prudence. So, I mainly chalk it up to tenacity. Of course, I will have to do it all again in a year and a half...But, I think that having a MA in history as well as narrowed research interests, a hopefully stellar graduate gpa, and more language training will help me get into a top program with funding.
  14. Thanks, Bakalamba.
  15. The Journal of East Asian Studies is good.
  16. So, would most people here say that Evernote is the best for archiving, references, etc? It seems like there are a lot of similar programs out there. I mainly want something that I can save quotes, articles, etc...and hopefully be able to easily do citations/references. Thanks! Edit: Oops, maybe I am looking for something more like Endnote? Does Evernote do the same things as Endnote plus more?
  17. So, you are also dating my GF??? My god, I have never met a more disagreeable person in my life. I would give specifics, but you would not believe them! Actually, it is pretty much in deal breaker status. I can't imagine having this crazy woman around (or staying at my home for a month) when I have a kid. The strange thing is, it's the first time I ever had a SO's parent not just love me to death.
  18. Nice to meet you too! Very cool, you certainly have studied longer than me (so, thanks for using kantan nihongo)! Haha. I don't know Thomas Lamarre, but Ill look him up. My classical Japanese Prof. was Mack Horton at Cal, although I did a bit of work on the Heijimonogarari while doing my year abroad at Sophia. I'll be in Eugene pursuing my MA in early modern Japanese history starting in the Fall. よろしくね〜
  19. I was very lucky to get fully funded after being on the funding waitlist. Of course, "fully funded" will be a few steps down from my current lifestyle.
  20. Hate to say it, but just above 30th IIRC. I took it a few years ago. I was an unconventional student, coming into my undergrad program from JC after years working construction and traveling and hadn't taken math in ten years (aside from stats, which I got an easy A in?). I obviously should have brushed up a bit. Despite that, I think I am in the perfect place for now, as I needed to deal with being an Asian Studies major who wanted to pursue a history doctorate.
  21. I had trouble due to my low quant and average AW score. I found a Professor who wanted to sponsor me at a great (NRC top ten) Japanese history program. The East Asian committee there agreed with him, and recommended me to the dept for admission and funding. I didn't get funding and therefore didn't go. I obviously had the rest of the package and also a 98% verbal, but the low quant hurt me (it was below 50th). I must say it was a bummer to get a couple of really positive emails basically leading me to believe I was in, only to have my bubble burst! Thank goodness I made it in elsewhere. All I am saying is that having a POI pulling for you is not always enough. It still comes down to the Ad com and dept. I got into a couple other programs, and I think it will be for the best. But, I plan on retaking the GRE next summer in preparation for possibly moving elsewhere for my doctorate. Either way, best of luck to you!
  22. Honestly, I am hoping that I can take fourth year Japanese as pass/no pass. The lang requirement for the MA I will be starting is passing a document reading test. I don't want to slack in the class, I just don't want to stress about yet another thing.
  23. Just wanted to give this a bump as it is something I may face next year.
  24. Yeah, most programs will kick you out for failing. Not to worry, there is always Greneda.
  25. Very cool! Sounds like you are Faaaaaar beyond my language level. I took an intro to bungo class my last year as an undergrad, and that was really fun and interesting (we did the Hojoki), but, I have to be honest: I would take forever to translate anything in bungo and there would probably be some errors. Kanbun just seems daunting. I'll pm you. After telling my recommendation providers where I am going and what I want to do they told me of all these connections to profs at various institutions. Small world, indeed.
