  1. From experience, you can only do so much for the students. My hours (usually) are put on the syllabus and students who care are the only ones that show up. I've had a couple (in the past) where I e-mailed them and eventually talked to them in person, but seem like they could give a fuck. Like most have said, just focus your time and energy on those who care more about getting a passing grade and actually learn.

Students have that tendency to take advantage of your generosity. Don't over extend yourself if you don't need to do so.

I'm really sorry, I know that was your dream school. It is elitist, I felt just as shitty when I got the Princeton reject. I'm sure where you got in is a great fit. I promise you, in a few days it won't sting at all. At least it's over and you can start making some exciting new plans!

no need to be sorry. I rather go to a program who sees potential in me over a program who doesn't. Either way, I'm getting my PhD and more.

They haven't said anything to me about other applications if that's what you mean. I know you're really anxious to hear back, but there's not much you can do. You may still be in the running, you may not, you gotta just give it some time. I'm betting you'll know in the next two weeks. At this point, I personally have assumed that if I haven't heard back from a place that I'm either rejected or wait listed.

I got my rejection letter, and I'm like fuck it! This is fucking elitist and I'm happy where I got in!

  4. You know what I'm glad that I got rejected from Penn State! I rather thrive and grow in another institution that sees potential in me. I'm tired of the overall idea that we need to get accepted in a high-ranking program to do well. Well, F!@# that. That's just ridiculous. I was bitter at first, but you know what? I'm getting my PhD AND an MPH at the school I got accepted to. So take that. This is the most adult-thing I've realized in the whole process of applying. I rather work my ass off at UAB and succeed than stress out at Penn State or U Penn. I'm done trying to attract prestige. I'm going to do what I freaking love wherever that maybe. So Penn State and U Penn can kiss my sociology ass!

Update, wait listed at Arizona, accepted at Penn State, Boulder, and Temple. I turned down Temple since they haven't offered funding.  How does the wait list work? If I accept at another school, then hear back after April 15th that I got accepted after all, is there a penalty or some sort of consequence for rescinding a previous acceptance? (I.E. if I accept at Boulder, then get off the wait list at Arizona after the 15th and accept there instead, is there any consequence for turning down Boulder after the fact?) I know it's a dumb question, but humor me.

    hey @FutureGames

Any word on Penn State? They haven't said anything else since.

  6. Thank you for this insight! I do agree with everything you said. If I may add, I think what we all get caught up in is also prestige of the program. I watched a TedTalk that explored how "star" students struggle in top programs while similar students who chose a less prestigious program thrived.

Sorry for chiming in, but this is something I feel that we as potential grad students and future faculty forget. As much as I am sad that I didn't get accepted to my top-choice program, I found a silver lining in my only acceptance where I have to opportunity to earn another master's in a related field en route to the PhD. Also, it doesn't hurt that the program itself is part of the only R1 campus in the state and where all its health-related research/programs are located at.

There's 3 acceptances up from UPenn and one of them is mine. They sent a midnight email to check the portal. It's one of the best funding offers I've gotten, and they were the last school I was waiting to hear from, so now it's time to start making the tough decision.

    gotcha! Congrats!

I guess if you heard from them earlier today, then the rest of us can assume rejection!

Just felt a little sting of "not feeling good enough" for any top 40 programs, but one acceptance is good enough right?

This just made my decision a bit easier.

From what I've heard, if you didn't get invited to their visit day, you should expect a rejection. They invite 12 or so to the visit day, admit 5 of those students, then as students turn down the offer, they move down the list to other people who attended the visit day but weren't admitted right off the bat. According to the DGS, they've never had to admit students who didn't attend the visit day

What a waste of $95 dollars! To tell you the truth, their program is a bit disorganized for me. One of the professors I wanted to work with left anyway.

Hey y'all, I'm new here. I'm in the same boat with Upenn as many of you. I wanted to ask @coffeentv, when you call them did they happen to tell you (or do any of y'all know) if they interviewed candidates during the selection process?

    Best of luck to everyone!

I e-mailed the graduate assistant of the department and said:

"At this time I'm unable to give you an answer we are still waiting for the Dean's office to approve our list. Please give us a few more weeks. "

So, maybe early March at the earliest.

I'm also a lurker coming out of the shadows.

I've gotten accepted at 5: Duke, Cornell, UMaryland, UC Davis, and University of Southern California.

Still waiting to hear from UPenn and Boston U. Based on what everyone else has posted, I'm assuming we won't hear back from these for some time.

U Penn according to another poster is releasing them in the next week or so. So fingers crossed!

I haven't been around in a while -- did you get an acceptance?!?!?

@KevinJHa yeah I did. I just haven't said anything on here since everyone is concerned about the big name schools on here so I decided to keep the news to myself. I haven't heard about funding, but going to talk to the grad director tomorrow and I have a million questions to ask about the program! Lol.

I called UPenn and Temple today because I need to tell Albany if I'm really interested in attending (I believe people with funding offers will start declining their offers soon) as soon as possible.

I didn't think I'd get into UPenn because of my ok GRE scores, but was hoping to get into Temple.

According to the nice lady who picked up the phone, Upenn has already made their decisions, but is waiting to get those offers approved by the graduate school. They are hoping to send out all the decisions somewhere between late February and mid-March. I was told to call back in a week.

Temple assured me that I have not been rejected, and told me to call back next week.

Did you speak to Audra Rodgers? She's the graduate coordinator (?) and I was about to e-mail her today about the status.... I'm in the same boat as you since I'm speaking to a grad director tomorrow. Once I find out about funding and ask her my 1 million questions, I'm pretty sure I'm set to make a decision since I haven't heard back from Penn State, Penn, or Vandy. I really thought Penn, Penn State, and UAB was a good fit for me... Just need to know and accept UAB if I'm didn't get into Penn & Penn State.

So... I'm assuming a mass rejected & acceptance notifications next week then huih?

No words from UWM yet. I'd rather they tell me directly that I'm rejected.

Although I didn't apply to UWM, I do agree that programs tell me directly that I'm rejected. It's hard waiting to see if we get in or not because all of our life circumstances are SOOOOOO different.

I told my mom this and she told me to just not base everything on decisions (and I see her point)... however, from what happened this application cycle... I was about to purchase Sam Smith AND Justin Timberlake tickets for their concerts in August and December respectively, I get an e-mail about an acceptance. Don't get me wrong, I'm ELATED and THROUGH THE MOON about it, but sometimes it's very hard to move on with life or look forward to things if life throws a curve ball. Lol. I'm still waiting on Penn State, U Penn, and Vanderbilt.
