  1. Is your top 3 MS program at UIUC?
  2. Hey Everyone, let me know what you guys think... I am a bit stuck about 4 options that I have. My background is I am finishing my EE at Caltech with a passion in circuits. I do want to just straight into industry, but I've heard that only having undergrad degree limits certain opportunities. I also ultimately want to do start-up work preferably in hardware, so I am debating whether to take one of my options or take a year off or so to reapply. Here are my options: 1. Princeton: Bad - Unfunded MEng in EE, weaker overall standing in EE field tech Good - Lasts only ONE year. Maybe great for networking later on. Plus it's Princeton 2. UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) Bad - Coming from CA, I don't really connect with the midwest feel :/. Requires thesis and lasts TWO years. Research would be in Power Electronics, which is interesting but I don't think is a very impactful field in consumer electronics (a debate that I cannot claim expertise nor will I go into). Good - FULL RIDE w/ 50% RA. Best EE reputation out of all acceptances. 3. Carnegie Mellon (Silicon Valley Campus) Bad - Unfunded MS. Very software engineering focused (which I am weaker at) Good - In Silicon Valley! Most businesses and technology in SV are focused on software and computing, so I would have to swallow the pill eventually. 4. Work for 1 - 2 years and reapply for Stanford/Berkeley. Bad - Lose 1-2 years of school environment. Likely still be unfunded (but for those two options, I would have no guilt paying). Obviously have to forgo my current options. Letters of rec from profs will be a bit outdated. Good - Top schools with great networking in the Bay Area. Application should have better GPA then previous (since transcript fully complete). let me know what you guys think!
  3. Hey Guys, I've recently been looking at admission rates in EE MEng at Princeton, and the stats are surprising me. The stats are linked here http://www.princeton.edu/gradschool/about/docs/ratestable/tablea/ELE_MENG.pdf For example it says that in the past two years: 2011-2012: Applied= 114, Admitted = 2, Percent Admitted 2% 2012-2013: Applied= 139, Admitted = 1, Percent Admitted 1% For even earlier years, the admit rate is much higher ~10-20%. I know Princeton's EE program is not bad but not that top notch either, yet their admit rate is really been crazy these past few years. What do you guys think?

  5. Hey Guys, I applied to Berkeley EE MS only (not the MEng) and I was wondering if anyone's had any knowledge or experience about when they give results? From their website, it they specifically say "An MS-only program is available in both EECS and CS, but admits very few students. It is appropriate for research-oriented students who may have particular reasons not to continue on to the PhD immediately or who want to try their hand at research without committing to the Ph.D..." Thus it seems like I should probably just give up my hopes on that, and focus on other opportunities.
  6. Right when I saw this, I got my rejection . It was a good run everyone, but it wasn't meant to be :'(
  7. bleh looks like MS only ppl are starting to get admitted. Does Stanford send that out all at once, or over a few days??
  8. Dont give up hope guys!!! You never know anything can happen! Also there are still other great places other than Stanford, it is never a one place fits all!! Good luck
  9. Wait so yo Wait so you are saying that the MS results will come after the Ph.D results? Do you know if they decide the MS along with the Ph.D's or is it done by a separate committee? I applied for only MS and am eager to know! Thanks
  10. Hajimiri is gone for conference this week until Friday I believe.
  11. See? Told you! Good job!!!
  12. I would also be interested in anyone answering this... the prospects of having to move to Illinois is a turn off coming from CA.
  13. Also the number of years in Ph.D can vary. My father finished his Ph.D in 2.5 years after his MS, and my advisor here finished his Ph.D in like 2 years or something. It really depends on how productive and aggressive you are in your research, and of course luck
  14. Haha, I am finishing my undergrad at Caltech. I've only heard from UIUC so far, and they gave me the thumbs up . Good luck to oyu!!
  15. Haha, both are amazing. It's too bad you can't do both!!!
  16. Just relax, results never come all at once. I'm sure your chances are very good since you got interviewed
  17. I agree with your ranking for the most part. But I'd make a 4th category cuz I feel that UIUC and GaTech are pretty decent compared to the rest on the 3rd list. Ok Harvard is NOT number 2... they are really bad at Engineering.
  18. I CANT STAND THE WAIT, I AM NOT GETTING IN I KNEW IT. WHYYY CRUELLL WORLD :'(
  19. haha it's always competitive at berkeley... I've heard their acceptance rate is maybe 5% for EECS
  20. I think you should relax... how can you call your POI if you don't officially have one yet?
  21. I don't think that this will help you get in. I mean even in the perspective of getting a jobs, you only tell the employer you offer salary so that you can try to negotiate a bump in pay. This is already assuming you GOT the job offer in the first place. The only reason to use this, is if you know that the deadline to reply to that acceptance is very early and that you may risk not knowing your outcome from the other university.
  22. Hmmm sour... it's ok man, just keep applying to other places! It is always tough to be international student
  23. I'll just take a full time position after my summer internship
  24. I believe it was interview in consideration of admission, but I shortly got accepted afterwards . It is a really enticing package, but I am not sure if I totally want to move to Illinois from California :/
